- Annie Malone was a self-made millionaire. She started a cosmetics manufacturing business, focusing on Black hair products, and she began a beauty college. This famous Black St. Louisan was also a philanthropist. The St. Louis Colored Orphans Home was renamed in her honor.

Both Annie Malone and Madam Walker were great women for the times...they both were examples of driven women
actually what they achieve is common. Many of these women exist today but they hide their wealth. because these 2 women & others were so public with their wealth. Petty Uncle Sam; legislate "black hair care business to the Koreans".

In the beginning they show madam CJ Walker getting her hair pressed by Annie Malone and also stealing her products. The Netflix series shows madam CJ being Annies employee. Did y'all missed that part?? An she also mentioned almost at the end that she took Addie's products and reinvented them to make them better Madam wanted to go into business with Addie. Addie thought she was better because she was mixed. That was also mentioned in the series.

HEKYMA crazy thing is, the movie was lies on both legacies . She never stole her product. The base of both products were used in all products out in that time. They depicted both of the ladies horribly.
Actually Malone was the first self made millionaire. And actually was worth more than cj walker at the height of they success. the only difference was bad accountant records and book keeping. Lawsuits, taxes ,and her divorce wiped her out. But madam died rich so that's why cj gets all the credit. Plus she had better book keeping and accountant records

I knew of Ms Annie because of my godmother who went to her beauty college she shared photos and an awesome story; I thought to myself college or cosmetology classes She was quick to let me know it was not an beauty class it was an actual college I was reminded her words was business. I knew of Ms. Malone's story. That's one of the reasons I wanted to see the movie. IMO, Hollywood ruined it. Could have been so much better. I'll continue reading the books on these amazing women.

She had a branch in Atlanta, Georgia. I saw it. It was a nice brick building. I later learned Madame C J Walker imitated Annie Malone. I visited her building in Indiana. I admire both of these pioneering women. Thanks for keeping her story.

I’m so glad to see the documentary of Annie Malone. I studied about her many years ago. As a cosmetologist and a member of the National Beauty Culturtist League we have studied about Madam C.J. Walker and Annie Malone they were two powerful women! We never was taught about the rivalry between these trailblazers. Netflix ought to be ashamed of themselves! I do believe that Annie Malone’s story needs to be told accurately. Madame CJ Walker’s family and NBCL made sure that her story was documented. She passed away in 1919.

Wish they woulda preserved her building as a historical landmark. The Madam CJ Walker in Indianapolis still stands and is used. Maybe in part this is why Madam is known more. I've never understood how it happened.

This lady was born in the 1800's and she accomplished a lot of things. She was Black. She was an orphan. Yet, she persevered thru hard times. Langston's poem Mother to Son says: "Life for me ain't been no Crystal... don't sit down cause you find it's kind of hard. 15:15 If you are a hair stylist you know that what we do taps into a plethora of different things. We are often looked down upon because of our chosen career. It's the most unsettling feeling. It's hard to prove that what we do is NOT just about doing hair. Especially, when "some" students enroll because they don't think highly enough of themselves and think that it's easy; thinking that they are going to attend a beauty college and graduate by playing with "baby dolls" all day. No... before you even touch a manikin you will need geometry, chemistry, electricity, infection control and anatomy & physiology.
You know what, I only got to know about this woman through Self Made on Netflix, and honestly... I thought what an awful woman she was. But on the other hand, I thought there are 2 sides to every story, and I didnt get to hear hers... so here goes!
She couldn't of been that bad, she made products to women and it seems M CJW actually stole the formula anyway... not going to take sides though. I appreciate them both for playing such a crucial role in history x

Quietly, I was disappointed in the series because it made both of them look horrible. MCJW was one of my favorites to do reports on and I learn bout Annie in the mist. I didn't read half of what was shown in that series.

Well, I like others who are not from St. Louis had never heard of Annie Malone, got here because of the movie. THERE ARE MANY UNTOLD HIDDEN GEMS IN BLACK HISTORY. THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION!
The acting was good; I know M.Carter, LeBron James and O. Spenser worked hard but I think hiring Kasi "Bigger Long" Lemmons was a mistake. Could have included A. Malone and that would have shown Madam CJ Walker and her working together as Madam was Annie's top sales-woman. Just glad to see folks doing research along with learning truths.

"SELF MADE" was inspired by true events. Any piece of work that is "inspired by true events" is mostly a figment of the author's untrue imagination. It's fiction. You have to take it with a grain of salt. Especially when the soundtrack is from 2020 and the film set in the early 1900s🙄

There are certain facts that need to be explained and shown if the movie is based on a true story. You can't leave major things out.
@@Michelle-pn9xt If I make no error, in the beginning it says "inspired by" not "based on" From my experience, films that are based on true stories stick closer to the reality of the story, while "inspired" stories can go any direction the inspiration takes them. I've read whole novels that were inspired by one paragraph of a news paper clipping 😐

Mrs. Malone lived to be 87-years old; she lived long and prospered. Madame Walker was also prosperous but passed away at the age of 51. Walker was on a mission, but Malone did just as much good. The Netflix series "Self Made" depiction is terribly unfair (& untrue) to her legacy. Disappointing, but at least we are now also learning about this great lady.

Annie Malone was a great business lady. But what I took frm the movie was Annie's sales agents had to have a certain look (fair, light skinned). Even in the pictures shown in this video ..the workers making my products were darker skinned. Also we can't ignore the fact that colorism within our race is real. I can imagine it was no different then.
I've never heard of her. I don't have Netflix, but came upon her story on TH-cam, where some was speaking about the inaccuracies in the movie about Madame CJ Walker. Blacks that have power in media, need to make sure that our history is told with as much accuracy as possible. ✊🏾

I don't think so, this story typically highlights the ups and downs of madame CJ Walker and challenges she overcame before accomplished . Although her character was negatively portrayed, it was not purposely to tarnish her image but to showcase raw content( in terms of competition and revenge)of each passing stage.

Man these are stories that we cannot allow to be buried. They were thriving despite their oppression and racism. This is American history and need to be told!
