What's your best advice for working with video clients? Only one week out until the AOD doors open again, get live coaching for your business or video work: theartofdocumentary.com/
Asking the client what emotional takeaways they want to feel from the video. And then presenting a simple demo of how pacing, sound design, and color can evoke those emotional takeaways.
1. Less gear. Just use the basic. But you have to tell the client first that this is the gear you use to achieve this kind of video. 2. Brief your actors and clients. 3. Bring an efficient production crew.
Mark, this video is exactly what I needed. I get in my head many times and overcomplicate the final product. There is such beauty in simplicity. Candice's video was dope!
I must say, that this one question about "what's the problem" was some eye-opener to me. I've struggled with client works for some time, got demotivated and stopped making videos. Because I started to feel overwhelmed, when I have to make some video. Now I get back happiness and joy, and this video is some next step in my process. Thanks MB!
Beautiful work! never gave it much thought, but being intentional about the story / purpose not only makes for a better end result, but is a huge time saver. Little bit of thought and prep makes a big difference. Definitely takes practice though to have the confidence rather than wanting to cover all bases. My fav time-saving-trick only works for projects with multiple deliverables, but I love the efficiency of batch filming in one location. Eg in one day getting most of the material for 6 deliverables for that client. Shooting separately would have taken 6 half days, longer if you include transport, charging batteries etc etc
Can’t agree enough with simplicity. I hate being rushed because it’s taking too long to setup all the gear and accessories that may help but aren’t super necessary. The client just wants a good product / results. Especially on fast-paced shoots, it’s such a relief to be up and ready to shoot in just a few minutes.
I love this video, a great tutorial while showing off your personality. Thanks for reminding me to set expectations on what video costs should look like for the client.
Great tips Mark, and specially the fact that "you don't have to use every toy you own" The only thing I would add (which is implied in your video) is to build a relationship and try to make it fun for the client. Most business owners do not get in-front of the camera often and a video shoot is a special experience, so make it a good one!
BTW - if you can't afford a 5' Octa (or rather not lug one around...) - get a 7' umbrella with a diffuser- for $100 you. will have incredibly soft flattering lighting - basically a portable 'window'!
This is what I needed Mark. Simple explanation of the process. Thank’s. Also I’m using Milanote to plan the shoot with the client. So we have one board where we can put all the details and ideas together. It’s helpful cause the client knows that he is involved in the process.
People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it. We always begin client videos with a personal, emotional appeal to the audience and build from there.
This is video was so useful, I'm planning to start my own show and I want to make documentaries for people next year so those tips really helped me out.
This would have been great a week or two ago. I recently started freelancing and just learning as I go. I directed an event two weeks ago and tomorrow directing/shooting a short 'day in the life' commercial for IG for a wellness brand which has been planned out. I'm feeling both excited and nervous. That video for Candice was amazing and her work looks beautiful. I would hire her, maybe one day. I'll be looking back on this video again soon and practising some of the things I didn't this time. Thank you, Mark. as always, an interesting and informative video.
Hey Mark, great video! I love the simplicity. Will you be offering a course geared towards how to make these doc style promo corporate videos for small businesses? Something geared for a solo shooter/ one man band would be great. Obviously how to best structure the story/ad, but also cinematography tips on camera/composition and especially lighting! I haven’t done too much office type stuff, but I just did two shoots in the past week in an office and I struggled mightily with lighting issues, bad overhead lights, no natural light. etc. What do you do when it’s just you, no gaffer and grip truck, just one camera and a couple 600ds? Sometimes changing locations is not an option. This kind of stuff would be super helpful in a course and I’m sure there are a lot of solo filmmaker like me in the same boat trying to make it work on a budget, both time and money. Thanks!
Great video mark...this is all i need now Keeping things simple.i've always had issues with client's expectations thereby planning for things that are not necessary. Learnt alot especially from this channel.. thank you
MAAARRRRKKKKK! SUCH a good video, brother! The 3 question tip is going to simplify my life immensely and the end video you guys produced was beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing! And if you ever need any help on a shoot sometime, I would love to help and learn. I'm just down the 401 in London. Cheers!🍻
Cool, love the pacing. Thought the vhs look was a bit out of place, but that could be taste. Thanks for the advice! Asking them for footage is such a smart one. Then just praying it's not all vertical of course 😬
Cool bunch of advices (I recently had to be pushed in a "corner office" by the client because their original spot was not available and yes... it sucked.) LOVE the result of the clip for your - very talented - client! Great job and I might steal some of it (style) for a future production :p
Love this video, it's just what I needed. Thanks so much. Just one question, what's this VHS mode you were talking about? Curious to find out how you create that effect.
What price range did you charge for this project? I have something similar coming up and am trying to figure it out haha. Thanks for dropping the knowledge bro!
Hey Mark! Thank you for this helpful video, as always. I was wondering how you did the VHS iPhone effect? Did you just use an overlay in post? Or did you record like that internally somehow?
You say to establish visions for the film before shooting. What if the client has accepted the style of the video, but after showing him the draft, says that he expected something completely different and wants to re-record the shots, or he abandons the project? And no, he don't want to pay extra for another shooting day :)
Best advice - make the background speak to the subject. MOST of the frame is background in an interview. Use it. When scouting a location, consider taking that art direction step. Build some visual subtext into the frame. Not just good lighting but good lighting on stuff in the background that speaks to what the subject is doing and saying in the foreground. That being said I do a talking head piece once a week with a super stark background... 😐🤭
“There is always hope!” 😄 Once again, great advice! I’m literally about to quote my first video (an interview) and I’m genuinely baffled as to what I should charge? How and where do you guys figure out your costs? Btw: thanks so much for all your videos … this time next year I intend to have earned enough from video to join your AOD (just got to use initial earnings to buy kit!) C’est la vie! :)
If you join AOD now (especially Module 1 or create & earn) you could start learning how to make so much more money. So many of our students have doubled and tripled their income since joining AOD! Why wait another year?
@@markbone A fair point! Let me look into it (the honest answer is I'm totally skint at the moment after a slow start to the year), but I get it's a worthy investment; I just need to be paid first. "Catch-22". (I've got to pay the mortgage and put food on the table first ... damn it life! 🤷🏻♂️😂). Seriously though ... I can see your course will definitely help me make a lot of money as your knowledge and information is priceless; I WILL be back.
Great video dude, I agree with keeping it simple and straight to the point. Especially dealing with clients and figuring out “what problem does this video solve”. Then it was also a nice touch adding the reference videos prior to shooting and coming to an agreement on what the final video should look like. 🤘

this video is a game-changer. This really destroys the overthinking and stress that can arise working with clients. wow thank you
