This first AI control video is a little long and drawn out, but I go over almost every command in every menu that you can give to AI. It's a good fundamental to know everything that the AI, and more importantly, yourself, are capable of doing while utilizing AI. Skip to the last 3 minutes to see me put it all together using Voice Commands instead of keyboard shortcuts.

4:23 Menu 1 - "Move" - Movement
8:25 Menu 2 - "Engage" - Targeting
10:28 Menu 3 - "Target" - Fire Modes, Engagment, Facing
14:38 Menu 4 - "Mount" - Vehicles, Turrets, Static Weapons
18:22 Menu 5 - "Status" - Almost never used - Report Status
19:02 Menu 6 - "Action" - Used for equipment/looting ammo and weapons and directing your medic to heal the nearest target. You can also make AI open doors, but you never know which door you're telling them to open
24:19 Menu 7 - "Combat Mode" - Very useful - Set Combat State and Stance
29:11 Menu 8 - "Formation" - Set Formation(sets for whole squad, not just selected individuals)
31:13 Menu 9 - "Assign" - Assign units to teams and select the teams.

Q:What are your system specs?
A: i5 Ivy Bridge 3570k; 120 gig SSD; 1tb Standard HD(for recording); 8 gigs ram; nVidia Geforce GTX 560ti (I run ArmA anywhere between 20-60 FPS, on med-high settings)
Q: What do you use for recording?
A: Fraps for video and system audio; Audacity for personal audio.
Q: Why don't you play in First Person?
A: I'm a 3rd person gamer. I hate first person. It's unrealistically restricting. A game has to be extremely exceptional to get me to play it if it's First Person Only(i.e. Planetside).
Q: Were you in the Military?
A: US Army 99-06, Radio Operator(25C). Non-Combat Veteran.
Q: Is that AI or real people?
A: If it's Wasteland or DayZ, it's real people. If it's an ArmA Mission it's AI unless I very specifically state otherwise. The 15th doesn't PvP.
Q: What ArmA mods do you use?
A: For ArmA 2 - ACE/ACRE are the core. Others include: DFS 3rd Person, Instantviewdistance, SMK Animations Lite, ST_Collision and ST_Evasive, and Blastcore WarFX. For sound: Vanilla mixed with JSRS. For ArmA 3 - Danish Military Advisors for the M4

@@sunnyjim1355 A little late, but the AI behavior in this game isn't obvious. There are quirks to their behavior that new players like myself have a hard time nailing down, and this video exposed all of them.

I love how the game explains none of this and wants you to read the field manual apparently in mission to figure all this out.

I recently figured out the 'supress' command. When you issue it the AI will begin firing bursts at wherever you are aiming. So in order for the Ai do suppress it must be able to see at what (or where since you can supress an area rather than combatant) you are aiming and be in 'open fire' state.
Not the most common command you will be using since positioning of fire support is more important than issue specific suppression commands. (The move menu is your best friend forever). But can be useful in niche applications.
Still the beest video about it, in 2020.
Great tutorial, when I built my first gaming pc, this was the first game I bought, but the lack of tutorials made it a nightmare at first. Finding out something new each time I play :D

Nice video JEster, you only forget one thing, when u select an unit and press ALT the default menu will change siglty, its a good way for order AI to watchs a certain place, heading, instead using the N, NE, E, SE, etc

I don't get why they removed the "Fire on my lead" command in the default menu, it was there in Flashpoint.

i watch for nostalgia and to see how far weve come. still love this game. learned alot in the editor. worked on the cherno redux team,released dayz missions and combined ops scenarios...still goin strong.. Not all the commies in hell could stop me.

I use the -exact- profile I linked. The "heavy modification" I put into it was because I use G to select my team and ESDF to move, so I had to switch all those buttons in the commands one by one.

question about the team assignment for playing co-op (specifically on LAN)
Is there a way you can assign team leaders within the assigned teams? i.e. I play with a friend often, and have to manually tell individual AI units to follow his player. But could I get the AI to follow him as well as give him command over those AI units, while retaining command over whichever AI units are in my own assigned team?

You can hold either alt or ctrl, it'll change the contextual 'move here' in the default command menu to 'watch direction'. It's a lot easier than using the thing you showed here that gives you the cardinal directions.
15:25 "what?" *rubs eyes* *rewinds back to **15:25* There was an opening large enough for the AI and it found it. Damn fine job!
My first real use of the combat modes was in a mission to rescue a downed chopper pilot deep in the salt lake in thick fog (on Altis, the Dynamic Campaign mission).
Had em all on stealth and hold fire, sneaked up while crouched and prone until we could barely see the enemies. Everyone got a target on their own, i gave the order to open fire.
Mission over, success. :D

Thank you for your great videos. Im just playing singleplayer at the moment and these are really helpful. But i have still a lot of questions concerning your experiences about missions and scenarios. Currently im playing WLA with gettactical interface, but it is quiet buggy. Is there any way to contact you in another way than face book. I do not have facebook.
Check out VAC. Its voice recognition software that allows you to set phrases to key presses. You can download profiles for arma 3, and theres even a training mission for using it on steam workshop. It's improved this game immensely for me. It's $20 though after a trail period. Highly recommend it.
Hey what Voice command program do you use? BTW love your vids. Ive been watching for years. Played Arma back when it was OFP. just got arma 3 with new pc rig. However I watched your vids for the last 5 years prior to getting arma. Great stuff. So I guess you could say this introduction has been a long time coming. lol

Can you make some tutorial for VAC, never used it before but seems so much more fun playing with voice ( and easier of course ). Could you also leave your arma 3 profile which you use for AI commands for VAC?

Hi jester just wondering whether or not you would be will to do a indepth video on the VAC, how to set it up in Arma 3 etc.
Nice, the command menu is such a pain in the ass, the voice command program is a nice touch.
Squad and Disregard are actually the same command. I think the default may be "team" So find the "team" command, and add squad and disregard in there.
Basically if you say squad once, it selects the squad. If you say it again, it deselects the whole squad. I didn't like saying squad to deselect my guys, so I just put disregard as an extra command in there. Technically I can select my guys by saying "disregard".
how did you manage to get the detached camera at 33:51. This could be a very useful tool in commanding and could replace the buggy GetTacticalMod.

Question: The second soldier from the left looks like he has an M240? Correct me if I am wrong. Did you import that from Arma 2 or is there a mod i don't know about? I would like to set up teams: German, American, Canadian, etc. with all of their actual weapons per team, so i am interested to know how you got that weapon. I appreciate your help. I have three questions. 1. When you had the units return to formation after spreading them out why did the one continue to look forward while walking backwards? 2. How would you make them continue to follow you without returning to the default formation? 3. On the website for the voice software there is a download and purchase tab; what is the difference in the two products?

Great tutorial. I couldn't for the life of me, figure out how to select teams after you gave them their colours.
Sorry for asking this like a lazy bum before having checked your channel, but will you do a tutorial of sorts about selecting targets in vehicles, such as tanks, apcs or helicopters?
I've tried all 3 target hotkeys, "Target next", "Target (vehicle)" and "Target whateveritwas". None of them seem to function at all what so ever.
The only reliable way to target something seems to be by right clicking exactly on the enemy, or the 2 menu.
Surely there MUST be a quick key to target spotted enemies?

How do I set this up in the editor. Is there a previous video that shows how to connect so I can control the units individually
For number 2 what I meant was, after spreading them out and then telling them to stop and then telling them to return to formation, they got into the default formation behind you. Is there a way to get them to continue following you, but stay spread out?

Are u able to control other AI fire teams as well? Or limited to only ur fire team?
only ur team. but with mods u can control other fire teams and squads aswell. try using MCC4 (mission control center 4). it only allows u to put simple waypoints like "destroy", "move", etc. for other AI teams (even opfor), but it works.
When is the next co-op video? and you should definitely use these USMC units in it
Yes. The default buttons to cycle through your team in A2 are Y and U. I don't know what they are in A3.
Could you post your modified VAC? or create a how to video on the changes you made?
Hello, good. I would like to ask you a question. How do I put the team I want to drives before starting the missions ?. For example, if I want everyone parescan with m4. Because I have several mods and no scripts uniforms and backpacks. Not if I understand. Thank You

Isn't it possible to switch your "player" over to one of the AI units and pull out the launcher and fire it? I think you might have to set units as "playable" in the editing, though, right?

I'm also using VAC but when I select all it only selects a small selection of people instead of all of them. When I first start out it does select all and I make teams but teams has nothing to do with it because when I selected all It chose two from team white and one from team red.. I don't get it!
What is "command unit" in menu below "hold fire" that is always disabled?
Are you activating it with ctrl+v(I think that's the default).
To get vac working you have to:
Start VAC
Load a profile(you'll see a blue P for profile)
Press ctrl+V(you'll see a green O for on)
Then it should be working.
u can also press tilde key and then hold alt to get I think 2 more options, watch direction and something else
how do you get those m4s are they pat of a mod. the ones i am talking about are those grenn colored ones
Which key is it to select your squad?, I heard it in the video but I don't know which key that is.
On some missions the debug console opens just pressing ESC. But in other missions, the debug console does not open, not even explicitly writing in the chat any "#debug" command. Why is that?
"Fire" is used very rarely. You use it in combination with "Target" to destroy things the AI normally wouldnt bother with. You can even use it to have the AI friendly fire each other.
Use this when you want to destroy enemy assets, target buildings, kill civilians and commit war crimes etc.
"Suppressive fire" is used in the same light, except to suppress instead of destroy.

so when im attempting to control ai i dont get the distance marker with the arrow when tryin to move a unit into position, is that something i have to set 1st? In fact its impossible for me to move a unit to a specific location :/ if i try to move a unit lets say to behind a building on the corner, he just wont go there, he may go within 5m, usually out in the open where he nearly always attracts unwanted attention rendering the AI almost completely unusable :( help pls?
