Awww 🤗 I always saw him as my/that mean, grumpy, old mentor who is a pain the entire time but gives you good teachings and that one thing you really need (lords divine fortification) to overcome the final challenge. And though he never said it, I think he's proud of us 😁 wish they'd have designed his fight better though 😒

Whatever knowledge he learned on the true purpose of the quest is unknown to us but what he learned was enough to make him backtrack on his entire notion of becoming lord himself.
Honestly Gideon low-key was always what made me the saddest besides Hewg and Roderika, towards the end as you kill all the demigods and set out to do everything he didn't really strike me that negatively. Sure he was a hard ass but nepheli's questline revealed that little seed of care in the old man's heart that always made me smile, then as you progress the story and he gives you more info it kind of felt less like arrogance and more like harmless ribbing, hell he and enya straight up tell you what to do and he even acknowledges that the greater will and the two fingers aren't to be relied on anymore. At the end of his stay at the roundtable hold he actually opens up a bit about himself and his mantle and even asks you what you think amidst all of it, like an equal. I was genuinely shocked first time around when I found Gideon ready to stop me, fully resigned to the fate Queen Marika had put on the Tarnished and convinced that no one, not even us, could possibly kill a God. He was right to believe that, after peering into Marika's mind, but one of us has to at least try.

As a vessel for god, pretty much, I assume in Marika's mind he saw someone whose knowledge was complete, someone who already knew everything and thus had nothing to learn anymore. The end of knowledge, the finality of the pursuit, the lack of challenge and anything to do terrified him into submission. I wonder what studying the frenzied flame would've done to him

"Queen Marika has high hopes for us. That we continue to struggle, unto eternity." This is my favourite line from Gideon and probably one of the best in the game. Not because its his last breath, but because it greatly depicts disillusionment. Gideon has ultimately realised the futility of his efforts, how everything will return back to the Erdtree and how a God cannot be slayed.

The real question is why Gideon even bothers to fight us at the end. He uncovers Marika's will and her plot to kill the Elden Beast and free the Lands Between of the insidiously evil Greater Will. He believes it can't be done so has he become crushed and given in to despair? Since he believes Marika gave them a task that can't be completed and thinks she just wants chaos in the Lands Between...he knew nothing in the end. Honor to Marika, she who opposed their God for the sake of all. May she one day be returned to us whole and complete, the great hero restored.
The description of his armor only states that whatever it was he uncovered of Marika's will, it was enough to deeply disturb him. I was under the impression that the road to become Elden Lord was a fool's errand because Marika had selective prevented a majority of Tarnished from seeing grace - and even prevents you from entering the Erdtree. I felt like Marika had been painted out to this point to be a very despicable character given her propensity to curse those around her to an eternity of slavery (Hewg, the fire giant, all of the tarnished) for goals which were unattainable and this just seems like an instance of somebody coming aware of these machinations. Gideon is all knowing but from the start he clearly has only been acting in adherence to the destiny and purpose of the tarnished. Gideon learns that his purpose is to continue the cycle of this fool's errand and he tries to stop the protagonist from breaking that cycle more than they already have. But that's just how I read into the whole thing, could be wrong.
He thought no man could possibly do as Marika wished and kill the Elden Beast and Greater Will (nigh omnipotent) which was true. Gideon was right, a man cannot kill a god. A *mortal* man like everyone else BUT the Tarnished, that is. He thought all tarnished were condemned to be bugs, crushed by the Greater Will if they tried to oppose it, so he stopped everyone from entering Marika's domain and (in his POV) curse all of life in the Lands Between to be wiped out by the Greater Will. Until the immortal Tarnished killed him, the first and second elden lords, and the very link between the Greater Will and the Lands between: the Elden Beast. Notice that it's not just Gideon who has been crushed mentally, the Two Fingers, able to directly communicate with the Greater Will, have gone radio silent upon understanding the true motives of both the Greater Will And Marika
@@seniorcaw6374 That's just not what went on, you're specifically told it takes ages for the Two Fingers to communicate with the Greater Will. Radagon is preventing people from entering the chamber, it's his seal on the door. Hewg and Roderika discuss and know Marika's plan just fine since she told it to Hewg. She always wanted them to kill the Elden Beast.
He’s a grump and an arse, but I still kind of love him. His voice and the lore he imparts is fantastic, sounds like he’s a man who’s really lived through history and recounts it with the weight of ages appropriate to living legends.

I'm torn on Gideon, on the one hand he's a piece of shit that willingly discards Nepheli the moment she fails him but on the other hand it's nice to get at least some recognition for the shit you do. Like you defeat Malenia, a woman strong enough to bring down Radahn and blight the entirety of Caelid arguably when she's at her peak in phase 2 with her becoming the goddess of rot and nobody aside from Gideon even remotely recognizes that? Man killing gods is some thankless shit xd.

Man, Gideon feels honestly wasted in the Plot. He could have been a cool active player that works parallel to the Player through-out the game. Instead he just spouts Exposition and has a shitty bossfight.
I remember meeting him the first time. His voice line sent chills down my spine, also pissed me off. I knew he was gonna stab me in the back, another arrogant person in a souls game who thinks he knows everything and now I'm not useful anymore? Piss off, Tarnished or not, I can be anything I want to be, and that throne is mine. "A Tarnished cannot become a lord, not even you."

Is this character a mentor figure / a companion in the ship towards the end of the world / a manipulator that sees others as pawns I really like his performance and it was kinda cool to know gideon is a sort of witness of the players story even though he oposses us near the endgame I like his character - hes kind of an assh*, pragmatic, has a certain disdain for the player, his adoptive daughter - but not quite to the level of being an antagonist, its just kinda how he is. I think we all knew sooner or later wed have to fight this guy but hes still a charming character he contributes a lot to the atmosphere of the hostile world

The real question is why Gideon even bothers to fight us at the end. He uncovers Marika's will and her plot to kill the Elden Beast and free the Lands Between of the insidiously evil Greater Will. He believes it can't be done so has he become crushed and given in to despair? Since he believes Marika gave them a task that can't be completed and thinks she just wants chaos in the Lands Between...he knew nothing in the end. Honor to Marika, she who opposed their God for the sake of all. May she one day be returned to us whole and complete, the great hero restored.
It definitely doesn't feel like he fights you out of maliciousness, so yeah, it's interesting to think about his true reasons at the end.
The description of his armor only states that whatever it was he uncovered of Marika's will, it was enough to deeply disturb him. I was under the impression that the road to become Elden Lord was a fool's errand because Marika had selective prevented a majority of Tarnished from seeing grace - and even prevents you from entering the Erdtree.
I felt like Marika had been painted out to this point to be a very despicable character given her propensity to curse those around her to an eternity of slavery (Hewg, the fire giant, all of the tarnished) for goals which were unattainable and this just seems like an instance of somebody coming aware of these machinations. Gideon is all knowing but from the start he clearly has only been acting in adherence to the destiny and purpose of the tarnished. Gideon learns that his purpose is to continue the cycle of this fool's errand and he tries to stop the protagonist from breaking that cycle more than they already have.
But that's just how I read into the whole thing, could be wrong.
He thought no man could possibly do as Marika wished and kill the Elden Beast and Greater Will (nigh omnipotent) which was true. Gideon was right, a man cannot kill a god. A *mortal* man like everyone else BUT the Tarnished, that is. He thought all tarnished were condemned to be bugs, crushed by the Greater Will if they tried to oppose it, so he stopped everyone from entering Marika's domain and (in his POV) curse all of life in the Lands Between to be wiped out by the Greater Will. Until the immortal Tarnished killed him, the first and second elden lords, and the very link between the Greater Will and the Lands between: the Elden Beast.
Notice that it's not just Gideon who has been crushed mentally, the Two Fingers, able to directly communicate with the Greater Will, have gone radio silent upon understanding the true motives of both the Greater Will And Marika
@@seniorcaw6374 That's just not what went on, you're specifically told it takes ages for the Two Fingers to communicate with the Greater Will. Radagon is preventing people from entering the chamber, it's his seal on the door.
Hewg and Roderika discuss and know Marika's plan just fine since she told it to Hewg. She always wanted them to kill the Elden Beast.

He’s a grump and an arse, but I still kind of love him. His voice and the lore he imparts is fantastic, sounds like he’s a man who’s really lived through history and recounts it with the weight of ages appropriate to living legends.

@@AmogusCumslum While I understand the point you're making...I doubt any tarnished (including us, the players) are winning any contests when it comes to moral righteousness. The first mistake many make when judging these characters is looking to any particular code of ethics.
I'm torn on Gideon, on the one hand he's a piece of shit that willingly discards Nepheli the moment she fails him but on the other hand it's nice to get at least some recognition for the shit you do. Like you defeat Malenia, a woman strong enough to bring down Radahn and blight the entirety of Caelid arguably when she's at her peak in phase 2 with her becoming the goddess of rot and nobody aside from Gideon even remotely recognizes that? Man killing gods is some thankless shit xd.

After studying Elden Ring lore for months on end I finally know the most important thing about Gideon Ofnir.
He’s our senior.
You know it confuses me; in the wiki Gideon is known as the leader of the Roundtable hold of Tarnished. Even here he says he will only acknowledge us if we hold a great rune, which led me to believe at first that Gideon himself also has a great rune- but he doesn't. So was all that _"you are a just visitor here until you get a great rune"_ just pompous talk from a runeless old codger?
Would not be a Miyazaki game if there is not at least one self important guy in the hub world who introduces himself by telling you to sod off
He doesn't have a rune himself but he is pretty much a celebrity in the lands between so that's something.
He's a founding member of the round table, he's high-ranking by default my dude.

Man, Gideon feels honestly wasted in the Plot. He could have been a cool active player that works parallel to the Player through-out the game. Instead he just spouts Exposition and has a shitty bossfight.
It would be rad to run into him around limgrave or something seeing him be an op badass or something

Is this character a mentor figure / a companion in the ship towards the end of the world / a manipulator that sees others as pawns
I really like his performance and it was kinda cool to know gideon is a sort of witness of the players story even though he oposses us near the endgame
I like his character - hes kind of an assh*, pragmatic, has a certain disdain for the player, his adoptive daughter - but not quite to the level of being an antagonist, its just kinda how he is. I think we all knew sooner or later wed have to fight this guy but hes still a charming character he contributes a lot to the atmosphere of the hostile world
