Always thought it would've been a nice touch to have Selleck appear in Last Crusade as the guy who gives Young Indy his fedora. That would've been awesome.
There was a now debunked rumor in the 90's that the villain in Indiana Jones 4 would be Indy's long lost brother, to be played by Kevin Costner. Imagine if it had been Tom Selleck! The brother ignored and cast out by Sean Connery's Henry Sr, never getting the archeological teaching that Indy did, and now bitter and twisted as how their lives differed. Hmmm....... "That should have been me up there remembered for saving the Ark!" "Er...Tom that's not in the script".
While Tom Selleck would have fit that “40’s action hero” mole well, Harrison Ford as a charm and smooth “James Bond” feel as Indy, so I think it worked out for the best
Sure Harrison back then was a big draw and star, today he hasn't done anything except for the Sheridan show 1923 that showcases acting talent. Certainly not acting to a cgi dog in Call of the Wild, or playing old INDY. I don't know if he will be on point in a Disney Marvel movie, I mean they sure could do worse.
High Road actually predates Raiders. It's adapted from a 1977 novel and went into development before Raiders box office success. John Huston, director of Treasure Of The Sierra Madre was going to helm, with current James Bond Roger Moore starring. It was eventually directed by Brian G Hutton, who helmed Spielberg's favorite ever World War Two movie Kelly's Heroes. And scored by James Bond composer, John Barry.
And even more ironic is that the scenes in Raiders in "South America" were filmed in Hawai'i, where Magnum was filmed -- with Select being there awaiting the start of filming
Interesting how Steven Spielberg’s first wife, Amy Irving, was almost cast as Marion, and then his future wife, Kate Capshaw, was cast in the next Indy film, Temple of Doom.
Lucky break for her, as her career was pretty much over after, Black Rain, that film really should get an episode as it essentially blackballed an entire country with its nightmarish production, even, The Last Samurai, would be filmed in New Zealand.
@nasis18 Thank You, Ridley Scott was exasperated by the Japanese red tape, and, he vowed to never shoot there again, unfortunately, this was the beginning of the worst stretch of his career, he wouldn't helm another blockbuster until, Gladiator, in, 2000, and, his only other great film, Kingdom Of Heaven, was ruined by the studio, I really think he should consider retirement after, Gladiator 2, comes out, he had a legendary run, but, it's over.

George's deal for Raiders is actually the same one he got for Star Wars. Well almost. There he couldn't prevent Fox having creative input, but because they didn't have much faith in it he got the rights to the sequels, which is why Fox only retained A New Hope after Disney bought Lucasfilm. He also got the merchandising rights, which made him more money than his box office share. Following this studios were wise to how loose Fox had been with their deal, and so weren't going to let that happen to them. It is interesting that while Lucas used his new fortune to self-fund the Star Wars sequels and prequels, he asked studios to fully fund Indiana Jones.
@@Bulletsandblockbusters I did wonder if he could only afford one. 10:19 Funny how later when directing the Temple of Doom, Spielberg cast Kate Upshaw to play Indiana's new love interests. And they would soon get together during its production and later marry.
I could see Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones. It would have been an different Indy but it could have worked. They should just borrow from the James Bond franchise and recast. They don't have to get a Harrison Ford copy cat. Just make sure he looks good in the fedora, jacket, and whip and make you believe that's Indy.
Imagine if Tim Dalton takes the role of Bond over from Connery when he was offered the part. He turned it down thinking he was too young. Now imagine that the Bond Franchise does not have legal issues and Dalton stays on to make the 5 Bond movies he was projected to make.
If you look at the scene where Marcus goes to Indy's house in the released film, notice that Indy has a glass of Champagne he's drinking, and another, half filled on a table. Why would Indy be drinking wine from two glasses on his own? Also why is he wearing a dressing gown? It's not the middle of the night, as the establishing shot shows it's sunset. And Indy doesn't seem like he's just woken up. Was Indy in bed for another reason? This suggests that the entertaining a young woman part may have been shot, and either what we see is an alternative take or they decided on set to drop the love interest aspect. In fact a character is teed up for this. Now it could be the winking girl (or any of Indy's admiring female students) but the likeliest answer is Indy's apparent flame, who also appears, albeit briefly. When Marcus arrives at Indy's class he looks across the hallway to a young woman waiting. Marcus gives an expression that suggests he knows why she's there and he's not surprised. That's all we see in the released film. But in a deleted scene, viewable on the Blu Ray but strangely listed as an Outtake, we see what happens after Indy and Marcus leave the class. Indy is stopped by the woman, who is one of his students, and who he calls Susan. She apparently has spent time with him and wants to arrange more. Indy acts busy and suggests meeting later, but Marcus seemingly used to Indy's crushes and entanglements drags him away, to meet the government men. So did Indy originally meet her later? Susan was played by English actress Pola Churchill, with an American accent, as the college scenes were shot in England. Interestingly she's not a blonde, or Jean Harlow type as envisaged. Instead being a tanned brunette.
@@Bulletsandblockbusters Thanks! It's something I noticed a long time ago, as comes from obsessively watching films you grew up on, and looking at every part of the frame because you want to be there. When I read about the intention for the scene at script stage I made the connection. Officially they deleted this at script stage, but as I see it the scene as shot is odd if you don't include the love interest. Indy is waiting for Marcus to come and tell him if the OSS are going to let him go after The Ark. So why does he start drinking Champagne before he has the news? And why is he wearing a dressing gown? Unless they were being inattentive, I can't understand why they'd leave that in if removed at script stage. The costume designer would have to design or pick Indy's dressing gown. They'd need to choose to get and fill two glasses on set. And why is one half filled if intended for Marcus? It seems more like they shot it, as we know they shot the Susan subplot, then decided there to shoot it without her, but for whatever reason didn't change anything on the set. If true I just wish they'd release the footage, as they have with Susan in the corridor. I found out the actress's name after looking her up on IMDb for something else she was in, and seeing her listed as being in Raiders, but Uncredited as Girl in the corridor of the College. She was strikingly attractive, and gives a pretty good performance in the deleted scene. Addit: just found this in Trivia section on her IMDb page: "Shot two scenes for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) that ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor as Susan, a student of Indiana Jones with whom he was having an affair. The first scene had her interrupting Indy and Brody as they recount his troubles in Peru. The second scene had her at Indy's house when Brody arrived". Obviously anyone could have added that, but I like to think Pola did to her profile.
There's a belief lately that if the series had gone with it's original intention of different actors taking on the role of Indy, the franchise might be in a better state than it is right now.
@@thomasjoyce7910He’s referring to the Carl Barks/Don Rosa comics (which were the basis for the 1987 and 2017 animated series “Ducktales”), as having a big influence on “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, specifically issue #7 of Carl Barks “Uncle Scrooge” comic book from 1954. Titled “The Seven Cities of Cibola”, the story features a sequence of panels where the Beagle Boys (one of Scrooge’s recurring bad guys) attempt to swipe a gold idol from an ancient, ruined temple. Upon grabbing it from its pedestal, the chamber begins to shake and then a large boulder tumbles down and almost crushes the would-be thieves. Sound familiar? If not, let me refresh your memory: that is straight-up the iconic climax from the opening temple sequence in “Raiders”.
The idea of 2 halves of the medallion wouldve been overly complex and causing the opening half an hour being quite slow. Toht having a mechanical arm however is a sight Ive always wanted to see
Indiana Jones is fantastical, but I feel the gun firing metal arm makes Toht seem like a cyborg. It would work in Star Wars, but it doesn't seem right for a 1930's film. Even if we believe The Nazi's had super advanced secret tech.
@@davidjames579 Thats the central issue, though its seriel-esc its still has its down to Earth elements, with its inclusion wouldve taken alot of audiences out of the experience
@@1980StarWarsGuy It's a fine line, and while there is supernatural things it's like there has to be some element of reality. It really is a thing that Star Wars doesn't have to deal with, and you can imagine Lucas making a list of serial adventure elements, and moving things too fantastical for Indy into the Star Wars column.

This is CIA level analysis! Love it
@@Bulletsandblockbusters Thanks!
Obviously anyone could have added that, but I like to think Pola did to her profile.
love how the choke out from the whip, the gong and it happening in China. was used in Temple of doom
There's a belief lately that if the series had gone with it's original intention of different actors taking on the role of Indy, the franchise might be in a better state than it is right now.
I think so too
Hold on!! 1941 was an awesome movie! Loved it, and did everyone who watched it. John Belushi killed in that film!
not everyone loved it.
it tanked!

If Indiana Jones and Star Wars didn’t exist, my childhood would have been a complete disaster.
Chip N Dale influence.
Don't forget Ducktales. Ironic, since the original Scrooge McDuck comics helped inspire Indy, as well.
@@tyrannozilla
Ducktails doesn't have a character dressed like Thomas Magnum.
@@thomasjoyce7910 No, but Scrooge did visit ancient tombs and cities.
Danny DeVito Was Initially Cast As Sallah Before John Rhys Was Cast, But Dropped Out Of The Project Due To Scheduling Conflicts With Taxi
It was for the best, he basically played that type of character in, Romancing The Stone, and, Jewel Of The Nile, anyway.
They done 1 of the best trilogies in movies stories cast everything never should of went beyond 3 Ford is iconic in this role made how it worked out 4 him 👊
Raiders of the lost ark holds a special place in my heart.
It held a weird place in my grandmother's heart, it was one of exactly two films where the intensity completely turned her off to the point where she walked out, the other film was, Spartacus, btw.
The formula of your videos are top notch. I have to ask, if you have a full time job outside of creating content, is it anything that relates to this work? ie editing, creative producing, etc. just curious what someone of your skillset does for a 9-5
Thanks! This channel is my full time job. But I used to be a filmmaker :)
@@Bulletsandblockbusters I know your channel is relatively young so I thought maybe there was other work you had done recently or still did. But that makes sense it was filmmaking. Would love to see some of your earlier work dude!
Maybe some day :)

11:47 in the book Spielberg: the first ten years, he talks about how he remembers that he was the one who said Indy should shoot the swordsman but Harrison insists it was him. (Amazing book. Highly recommend.)
I'm sure it is, unfortunately, it would, probably, be too painful for me to read considering that the last film of his I saw theatrically was, Tintin, he's one of the greatest filmmakers that ever lived, but, his best days are clearly behind him, Ridley Scott's an even bigger example, Gladiator 2, is a, last-gasp, at a period of glory that's, sadly, been over for many years, simple as that.
@@matthewdaley746 I think it’s natural for there to be evolution. I think the post was a solid film and west side story was incredibly well directed and I loved the Fablemans. His next film is gonna be an original alien movie written by David Koepp so I’m excited for that.
But there’s no denying those first two decades are spectacular.
@Psl989 Unfortunately, I've, left, alas.
@@matthewdaley746 , Ready Player One was terrible. I was expecting the same energy and flair of Raiders, Spielberg directed it like he was bored and disinterested. It was like all new Hollywood corporate filmmaking, disposable/ forgotten almost immediately after being watched.
@@matthewgaudet4064Unfortunately, complacency's, painfully, obvious.
Tom Selleck would have been really great but Harrison Ford owns that role for sure and for certain.
Agreed
Was Templeof Doom the first big franchise prequel. I think chronologically Temple happened before Raiders. Am i wrong or right about this?
No offence to Tom Selleck but I cannot imagine him as Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford is as much Indy as he is Han Solo. Great insight.
I love what we got, but some of these concepts are very interesting
The movie has one of the best endings ever
I think you should make a video on the original R-rated Gremlins script that was made by Chris Columbus before Spielberg told him it’d make more money as a family film. It’s really interesting seeing how dark the first film could’ve been.
1:44 😂😂 so *that's* how that _The Call of the Wild_ meme became a justified Star Wars fan theory.
This film has some of the ideas that would be later used for the other films.
That’s such a cursed edit
Oh, you should do what could have been the third film. From what i remember, it was going to be a very different film set in Rhodesia( Zimbabwe).
11:14
That’s too futuristic. Also wasn’t the film always meant to take place in the past?
Why is it called Raiders of the lost Ark not Indiana Jones?
Why is it called first blood and not Rambo? Indiana Jones is the character name.
If I recall Lucasfilm or Paramount revised the name for DVDs, home video- Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark.
@@DavidLLambertmobile , yeah but thankfully not in the film itself. So its not the Star Wars adding A New Hope situation where they redid the crawl and starfield, and everyone always thinks it was always A New Hope when it literally was called Star Wars.
Original Plans for John Carter of Mars.
I don’t know if you’ll read this comment but earlier I was watching bright burn and in the end they teased a sequel but I read that James Gunn canceled it because of rights issues, do you think it a possibility we could see a what could’ve been bright burn 2? Btw love the videos and it’s so crazy how these movies were almost made and makes us wonder if what really could’ve happen. Probably my favorite what could’ve been is the Michael Keaton Batman 3 and Batman Ben Afflecj
Thanks! I can def look into it
For a moment thought this man is the next Indiana after Ford
No way it'll work
That guys dentist must've had an awesome time when the movie came out
Tom Selleck is a great actor but I dont think he would have stuck to the 3 picture deal. Magnum PI was a hit but began to loose ratings after the second season and Selleck wanted out . Ford on the other hand has stuck with Jones and Solo for many years and is still working . Raiders may have been a different movie with Selleck but I love the one we got.
Magnum, P.I., was the kind of thing that couldn't be repeated, nostalgia only got the reboot, so, far, and, Tom Selleck's career would languish for decades after the end, simple as that.
11:25
I did not know that.
Indiana Jones and the Symbols of Islam - th-cam.com/video/UN06MSGISr4/w-d-xo.html
Indiana jones has to be top 3 movie trilogies not close
Love these
I can't see the guy who sells reverse mortgages to old people as indy! Harrison Ford was perfectly cast!
I've actually seen the prop for the Ark of The Covenant.
Tom Selleck would have been a badass Indy.
The greatest film ever made with Temple of Doom being the best of the sequels!
I genuinely can’t picture anyone other than Harrison Ford playing Indiana Jones
I can't picture anybody else playing Han Solo, either, but, among the numerous people approached to play him in the early stages of production was Christopher Walken, which would have been, "uncomfortable," to say the least.
Tom would have been okay but Ford was perfect as Indy so it worked out perfectly Tom got to be a big star with Magnum and Ford got to play Indy to perfection he was the best guy for Indy.
How would Selleck be able to shoot Raiders during an actors strike?
That groovy moustache would have been awesome on indiana jones
Circle 7 Pixar Films What Could Have Been and Toy Story 3 Family Blended Episode please
You should do a “what could’ve been” the sonic the hedgehog movie
another good video could be The Lost Version of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
You Upload What Could Have Been: Thomas & The Magic Railroad
Do Robopocalypse please
Will that ever get made, there was supposed to be a Spielberg version, then a Michael Bay version.
7:22/7:40
I actually like the idea of Jeff Bridges as Indy. More so than Tom Selleck.
good stuff
Spielberg being frustrated he couldn't direct James Bond is laughable. It's kept mostly British because Hollywood is a juggernaut.
