    The severed wire during the Star Wars bit was a nice touch.

    The problem with your radio shack meter might be the range switch contacts that run on rotary board traces. Sometimes taking it apart and cleaning the traces with alcohol and checking the contacts on the back of the knob to see if theyre somehow fouled.

    You must have found out by now, but the ports light up, always in a pair, to tell you which ports to plug the leads into for that function.

      @@RetroHackShack Well, a little bit late for this but..... in the cheap DT830 multimeters.. that we use those of us who have been defeated by socialism...... when the DT830 acting up this way.. it's because the traces of the selector switch are oxidized and are "scratchy like potentiometers"... a bit of contact cleaner on the traces in the board under the selector switch.. usually do the trick...

    calibrate? are you using calibration resistors with less than +/-0.05% deviation? cause otherwise the meter prob is right and your resistor in fact isnt exactly 1kΩ ... pretty standard.....

    As a newbie to multimeters I found your review informative…so TNX. (Thw OM will probably be thankful too bc he will not have to explain where to turn the knob to and why…lol). But hey I’ve got a question on the KAIWEETS HT118A …. WAS WORKING GREAT, Once we replaced the batteries. (replacing batteries is a regular thing as we return to the island of Barbados). I also checked out both fuses ..on the off chance they could be my concern…..what IS MY CONCERN? Th OM had the meter in his climbing bag while on the tower and dropped a tool back into the bag. Said tool hit the meter….. ever since that meter has not “Worked”. No display whatsoever. The meter does not show signs of being damaged. Any suggestions, short of my purchasing him a new one for Christmas ‘23? (Ps boy do I miss radio shack… as a YL in ham radio it was a great place to go for whatever part we needed!)

    i have habotest ht118a.i compared with holdpeak hp-890cn. unfortunately the measurement speed of ht118a is slow. To test this, you can measure the fluctuation of tp4056's output.

    Excelente video!!, yo compre en el 2022 via Aliexpress un multímetro Habotest ht118A, el cual por unos día deje de usar y las pilas se sulfataron pero no alcanzaron a derramar liquido, lo destape limpie y no encendió mas!!! plata tirada y eso que lo recomendaban como bueno!!!. Le testie todos los componentes y los único que me dan corto son 2 transistores smd Y1 q1 yq2, si mal no recuerdo. Los reemplace pero amago a encender le realiza la calibración como indican por ahí pero arroja erro "0" y no encuentro data sobre eso. Una verdadera lastima porque tiene linda pinta y funciones.

    7:54 that rubber coating is not gonna last a long time it’s gonna break apart but since it’s a cheap one you can just replace it for a newer model a year from now

    • @RetroHackShack
      @RetroHackShack  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. Who knows how long, but it will break down eventually. It's been a few years so far and no issues yet.

    I have that one from the same place and I really like it... :-)
    Love the Darth Vader Bit... Lol LOL
    LearnElectronics did a review on this meter and has a link to Amazon. That is why I bought one...
    I have several Multimeters and several Analog meters and even a tube Heathkit one...
    I really like it and used it to fix my Vis99+ that it replaces as I found the contacts on the a cold solder joint in the leads and also the contacts on the rotary selector needed cleaned. It look ok but Not...
    The rings blink to show you where to plug the test leads into to do that test... It's in the manual that it is a hookup guide...
    I leave the covers on the leads but that is a choice of the user... Enjoy!
    Thanks for the video!

    Last weekend my dad showed me his multimeter which has an NCV sensor. I sometimes think that I am psychic because of all the coincidences in my life. It has a flashlight, too (although it is activated by turning the knob).

    i have a similar radio shack multimeter. it was always my fav.
    i got the kaiweets. i really liked it but i think i broke it right away. thing that annoys me is that it has two fuses and supposed "anti-burn" wiring. dont know why it was so easy to break if i did in fact break it.
    but i do know it does not work on anything but voltage

    • @RetroHackShack
      @RetroHackShack  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. I have only had mine for a few weeks now, but no problems yet. Were you measuring current when it broke? Did you try changing the fuses?

    Which one is the best multimeter?

  • @ReverendLinc
    @ReverendLinc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Aaron! I was going to say that seems like a lot of money for a multimeter until I see it has temp sensor. I get the cheapie multimeters (have a couple) and I have an infrared thermometer instead (I like having a temp gun to shoot at stuff, whaty can I say)...

    • @RetroHackShack
      @RetroHackShack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Link! I agree except when you need to measure something small surrounded by other components that might also be hot. I probably won't need it that often, but glad to have it. Also I am excited to have the capacitance on this one.

    • @ReverendLinc
      @ReverendLinc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroHackShack Yeah Aaron, it's nice to have capacitance right there for sure! Also like the voltage detection on there - might come in handy..

    I have a silly question: does the battery inside the meter still hold a good charge? My meter went crazy when the battery dropped below a certain voltage.

    • @RetroHackShack
      @RetroHackShack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. That's the first think I checked. The problem is the leads were bad.

    • @bufordmaddogtannen
      @bufordmaddogtannen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RetroHackShack Well that's good news, as these can be replaced. If only to keep the meter for sentimental reasons. I still have my first one which is still good for non super precise work.
      Good work on repairing the monitor by the way, I really enjoyed observing your thought process. 👍🏻
