    As a Dentist, I can relate to back pain already. One of the most important lessons I learned in ergonomics is that "the patient might be uncomfortable for a while, but if you don't improve your posture, you are going to be uncomfortable your whole life".

      Well, don't keep it too rigid. You might want to consider changing your posture more than keeping it perfect. As other comments have stated, constant change in posture - even poor posture - is better than staying still. Also, straight up may not be the best posture, as the video states.

  • @IllegalTacos

    As a physio myself, I approve all the content in this physio - the primary thing to remember is that no posture is inherently bad - its the circumstances surrounding the posture. Slouching by itself is not bad, but slouching for an hour is. So dont feel bad about coming home after work and slouching into the couch for 5 minutes, but try to move and fidget periodically! Think more like, not what posture your assuming, but how many different postures you take over the day. Motion is lotion!

      Hey, maybe try to look at why they have more often a damaging posture than a very unlikely to damage posture. If my neck is in itself cambered, how could i stand straight, the straight posture is what hurts me, provoke pain and nerves twitch, spasm and such.

    • @IllegalTacos
      @IllegalTacos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MmeHyraelle this is exactly what we've started learning more in the past few years. Some people actually get more pain and less relief in traditionally "good postures". That's why no posture is the 'best posture'.
      When I assess people, I note how they stand and so on, and if something appears amiss I ask them if it gives them trouble, or try to modify it and if it's painless or doesn't change their pain, it's likely not a contributing factor.

    • @IllegalTacos
      @IllegalTacos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@teemum.9023 You may think that say, 5-10 minutes is not enough time but your tissue doesn't care. Physiological 'creep' and tissue ischaemia don't care if you've rested enough - if those tissue processes start kicking in, it's time too move! All too often posture pain is simply your body telling you it's time to change it up.

    While in high school in the early 1970s, we females had to take a "health & poise" class that included how to do makeup, nail care, and how to properly dress. One of the things they had us all do was stand against a wall and see if we could slip our hand between the wall and our lower back. If we could, it was considered bad posture. Your back was supposed to be flat against the wall. Of course this was a mostly white high school and white women weren't supposed to have a booty. After working in healthcare for most of my life, I do know how important it is to have that curve for good back health. The back was never meant to be flat and there is nothing wrong with having a nice booty, no matter your race.

    Perhaps there is something in the fact that "good" posture feels uncomfortable, usually your body tends towards what is right for it. Idk, it kind of makes sense that there isn't a universal agreed upon posture, because maybe part of that is what feels right to different people.

    • @virglibrsaglove
      @virglibrsaglove 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've been thinking about that lately, too. It's not like we were originally designed to be bipedal. It seems like a lot of people have problems because of our trying to keep a perfect upright posture. I finally gave up on forcing myself to stand up perfectly straight. And I'm actually feeling a lot better now. Even if I don't look as good as I used to. Though to be fair, I do have scoliosis. So, maybe "good" posture works better for spinal-typical people than it did for me.

And people trying to push my shoulders back - which never really helped cos hey, who knew, your shoulders totally don't control your posture. Actually, it seemed to be more of a confidence issue for me. (Thanks, highly critical Asian parentals) When I was less sure of myself, I would have a more closed body language, which included a slouch - the "Trying to Disappear Mode". When I became more comfortable with myself and doing things outside my comfort zone, people commented that I didn't seem to slouch so much. Any lower back pain that I currently have tends to come from sitting in the same position for too long or good old reproductive system aches, rather than slouching per se.
    By the way, I've noticed something like this in Olivia too for this video. Her presentation style has really improved! More confident in presentation of speech, and less nervous bouncy gesturing. Yay!

    *so close* to mentioning scoliosis... XDD. Speaking as someone with it and a fusion from T-5 to L-5 (most of my spine), I can say that sitting 'upright' but not super straight is definitely the way to go so far as posture is concerned. Just try to sit up and pull your shoulders back slightly (this works for me, at any rate! If there's one thing I've learned, it's that every body is a little different, and just try to find what works for you. I've found that as well as just trying to sit up-ish, yoga and pilates to strengthen your core and back [and everything else] works *miracles*! Sometimes it's the little things that help ;))!

    I´d be also interested on what the ideal bed is according to science. I know that I get back and neck pain and bad posture from too soft beds and that even lying on the floor cures a big junk of it... at least temporarily, but a hard bed won´t allow you to turn during sleep and forces you to remain too long in the same position, which will hurt your butt and shoulders in particular...

    As a certified massage therapist I know this about "Text Neck" for every inch that your head is tilted forward equals 10 lbs of pressure on your neck. So therefore, don't tilt your head when viewing your smart phone. As I write this my head is upright and looking forward.
    I see a lot of clients with this issue. One more thing, if you work at a standing desk, try putting one of your feet on a foot stool about one foot off of the floor. This will ease lower back discomfort. Cheers and happy new year!

    I used to get text neck in the military doing FOD walks. For those that don't know what this is, its when everyone lines up and walks down the flight line looking down at the ground for objects that either fell off an aircraft or could get sucked into one. On top of that you were expected to wear head gear which didn't help the situation.

  • @markchip1
    @markchip1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The big thing about better sitting posture is to avoid the old idea of sitting with your body and thighs at 90 degrees, or a right angle. The tension this causes in the buttock and hamstring muscles will unavoidably pull your pelvis forward at the bottom and this makes slouching inevitable. You absolutely cannot hold yourself at a right angle for more than a few minutes just as you can't hold your arm horizontal for any length of time. The answer is to open that angle by either reclining (with some degree of lumbar support) or angle your thighs by raising your butt on an angled cushion or lowering the knees, as in those kneeling chairs. Back support can be a help here too but it's less critical.
    An angled desktop may also help, as does a raised keyboard and monitor. The key is to arrange the environment around yourself, as you are both the most important and expensive - AND THE MOST EASILY DAMAGED bit of equipment in most offices!

    • @markchip1
      @markchip1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @potato psoas- I'm sorry but you are completely wrong on this subject. These muscles have a natural tension at all times, unless you are unconscious! If they were truly relaxed as you seem to think, then you would have no difficulty holding yourself completely upright at 90 degrees hip flexion with no problem for almost any length of time. Can you? If so then you are a genuinely remarkable and unique individual! There IS a constant tension there;it's not enormous but it's certainly significant and VERY hard to ignore.

    • @markchip1
      @markchip1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @potato psoas - I can sort of accept that point but you did say (that if my points were true) that this ONLY applies if the hip extensors and abdominal were tight! This is the notion I find flawed because there IS A NATURAL LEVEL OF TENSION IN A NORMAL BODY. This is something that everybody faces, not just those with tight muscle groups. Everybody! It is because the human body is designed to be upright, not sedentary. The act of sitting creates additional gluteal and hamstring tension and it is this effect that causes the pelvis to rotate backwards, thus causing the lumbar lordosis to flatten or even become kyphotic. It is not possible to resist this force by continuous conscious effort (exhausting!) NOR is it possible to permanently and significantly lengthen those muscles by any form of stretching exercise. You have a choice - either suffer the consequences of long-term slouched posture or you can reduce the tension by opening the angle between body and thighs. There is NO practicable alternative!
      I fundamentally disagree with your reasoning that tight gluteals and abdominals are a PRIMARY cause of slumped posture EXCEPT in a VERY, VERY small minority of cases. Your body moves "comparatively" freely but ALL muscles have at least a minimal state of static, active tension (unless you are unconscious) and this will be increased when that muscle is put under any form of stretch, such as hip flexion.

    ... I always wondered why my posture tends to be kind of crap. Then mid way through the VIDEO where she's talking about balance being based on individuals and their physical make up I was like "oooooooooooooooooooooooh".
    What is considered good posture is really uncomfortable to me. But I'm really busty. Like, breast reduction covered by OHIP busty. So that all makes prefect sense. My center of balance is shifted to accommodate. Huh. That never really occurred to me in those exact terms.

    Also I hate it when there's like, chairs that are "guaranteed the perfect shape for your spine", but they're all the exact same measurements, as if all humans are the same height lol. The sauna I used to visit often changed their outside beds to be "supportive of your spine" but it only gave me backpains and I was clearly too small for it. You couldn't even adjust the head or anything! Very uncomfortable. I go to a different spa now :P
