It's important to keep in mind that the 1960s Batman was a comedy. The actors were playing these silly situations with a straight face, but it was never meant to be taken seriously by viewers. It was actually surprisingly very faithful to the comics of the time, but it also made fun of them too. That's the perception the general movie-going public had of Batman when the '89 movie was released; they thought he was a colourful campy crimefighter, not a dark brooding vigilante.
This movie came out when I was in high school and it was EVERYWHERE. The Batman logo was constant in 1989. Also, Jack Nicholson convinced Danny Devito to play the Penguin in the sequel because he got paid very well.
14:43 I think he’s more interested in the fact that she doesn’t know who he is. I think he’s used to everyone knowing him. 23:22 the way they did the makeup for this scene the makeup guys had to play with different kinds of makeup to see what would stay as a foundation. 30:03 he got a more concentrated dose of the chemicals whereas everyone else is getting a mixed dose.
0:42 😂"So comic booky!" Unfortunately, that was what they were shooting for. The 1966 series played it campy because the comic book didn't take the character seriously. (This is why we have a Bat-Mite) out got back to serious in the 70's. Batman does have one power people underestimate: The power to scare the beejeezus out of criminals. This movie had two iconic albums, the main score from Danny Elfman and the second by Prince. Elfman was nominated for an academy award.
Long credit sequences placed at the beginning of a film were more common back in the day, not just with Tim Burton: Superman (1978), Total Recall (1990), Scrooged (1988), The Neverending Story (1984), A Room with a View (1985) being a few examples off the top of my head
Look up how much Jack Nicholson was paid to star in this ONE film. Go ahead, just do it. Due to inflation from 1989, that would be equivalent to an actor being paid $16,292,607.50 today in 2023. He was not only paid $6-million UP FRONT, but also secured a deal that allowed him to receive not only box-office earnings but also merchandise sales from all subsequent sequels, regardless whether he played in them or not! You might say, the last joke was on the Studio!
While the Dark Knight is arguably the best live action Batman movie, Batman 1989 is (in my opinion) the best live action depiction of Batman/Bruce Wayne, Gotham, and the world these characters take place in.
I will happily give this another like 😀 I know Batman Returns is coming up and i look forward to that given it's darker tone i think some fans were turned off by it , i love horror movies myself so i enjoyed the more graphic tone of it . Cheers Nicki and Happy Holidays !🎄😀✨

Cartoony, absolutely. Batman, the dark knight, started as a comic book in 1940. In 2021 a near mint condition first edition sold at auction for 2.2 million bucks.
Little fact about the Joker, only in recent movies like the dark knight or Joker does the character wear clown make up . In the comics , tv shows, games as in this movie here he falls into a vat of chemicals that permanently bleach his skin and gave him the green hair and often the red lips as well ( the lips not always )
If you're new to Batman i recommend Batman the animated series. It perfectly captures everything that is Batman . Also you'll have Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill aka Luke Skywalker as the Joker and those 2 are most people's favorite. The voice acting is absolutely fantastic also the animation is beautiful and the soundtrack, just wow 😍
In 1939, Batman arrived as a comic book character. He was _dark_ and _gritty,_ and accordingly, he caught on right _away._ The 1966 TV show was an attempt to make him family friendly, and accordingly, it made him cheesy and ridiculous. Batman was never intended to be a family-friendly superhero. He lives in a world that's _dark_ and _gritty._ I mean, young Bruce Wayne saw both of his parents gunned down, right in _front_ of him. But the '66 version was the one I grew up with. This image was still fairly popular in the '80's. I was sincerely under the impression that was the Batman in his original _state._ It was not until I saw the Tim Burton version, in 1989, that I realized what _incredible_ untapped potential lay in this character.
I saw this movie in the theater as a teenager. It was the goddamned event of the season. Tickets went on sale 2 weeks in advance and sold out within 48 hours. "Sold Out" meaning every seat in every theater at every showtime for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of opening weekend. The line to actually get inside to your seat ran through the mall and out into the parking lot. And although it looks cheesy now - and it totally does - we thought it was the best movie we'd ever seen.
1:18 By now, I think I see what you might have been going for. This trailer is for a movie after several years of the TV show. If you want to watch this movie, look for Adam West - it’s hilariously campy and bad and awful and wonderful and painful lol The movie you’re watching, as I’m sure you know by now, is something much different lol Looking forward to seeing your reaction to the 1989 movie, especially with this trailer as the lead in 😅💙
i seen this when i was 7 and there's no other batman film like it. Keaton's batman and Nicholson's joker were just spot on perfect. that said the nolan trilogy and the strand alone joker were great too. but the 1989 batman is just perfection for me
Batman is an anti-hero. While other heroes follow the law to capture the badguy, an anti-hero gets the job done regardless what laws he has to break. At least this version gets rid of trouble regardless what he has to do. I think, and I probably am wrong, that Batman was the first anti-hero in the comic books. When Jack Napier fell into the acid, Batman didn't accidentally drop him. Watch it again and look at his (Batmans) face. Napier was causing so much trouble in Gotham and Batman is a little bit crazy. He meant to kill him. That's why Bruce Wayne was walking slowly with that look of amazement on his face in front of the courthouse. He thought Jack Napier was dead.
I thought that you would have heard of Michael Keaton (who is Bat man Bruce Wayne) It does make sense in a live action Bat Man film that Wayne be average build & height as he is wearing a false physique as well as a Cowl/mask, its easier to cheat in a cartoon, to have Bruce Wayne already muscular & 6ft 4" tall, BUT that doesnt translate to live action well. I thought at the time Bat Man looked muscular but not much as he is lean, the costume looked better in BAT MAN FOREVER as they gave it...thicker muscles. As for the sfx they looked dissapointing the buildings obviously scale models etc, BUT despite it all, the film is very atmospheric great cinematography lighting very east European 1930s industrial
So at the beginning, Batman apparently just watched a family get mugged and did nothing about it? Lol. He had to have seen it. Other wise he just attacked two innocent people sitting on a roof.
Great Reaction...... Batman film Directed by Tum Burton and Music by Danny Elfman/Prince is the perfect combo...... BTW..... This is the only story/movie where Jack Napier/Joker is who killed the Wayne's......
So... Batman '66 is the stupidest movie ever. I love it. I don't particularly like Batman Returns. It's not bad, just... it's not really a Batman movie. Tim Burton kinda forgot it was a Batman movie and brought a lot of his baggage to it. It works for Burton fans, but I'm not one. But Batman Forever? The worst thing a movie can be isn't bad, it's boring. Batman Forever isn't boring. It's fucking weird, it's interesting, it's not boring. Banger soundtrack too. Honestly... I'm not a big Batman fan but there's a ton of great Batman stuff out there; I wouldn't discourage you from watching any of it other than Batman & Robin. But the only one I would strongly recommend is Batman: the Animated Series. If you aren't particularly interested in more Batman content (or not for a while; too much other good stuff to get through, want to curate an eclectic mix) fair enough; if you aren't particularly interested in the much greater time commitment of watching tv shows for this channel, fair enough. But I'd definitely recommend at least watching s01e35 "Almost Got 'Im". A particularly fun episode, one of the best... it's an episodic show, so not too much is lost in skipping to a random episode. Certainly not in this case.
Michael Keaton was born in '51; he was 38. Nicholson was born in '37; he was 52. They both look "about the same age" because they're both clearly adult men so it's not like Keaton was early 20s, but one is pretty obviously older than the other.
44:15 Glad you enjoyed that. Ledger’s Joker is easily my favorite, but there’s something about each one Be sure to look up the TV series, Gotham, for some intriguing iterations. It was a good show, too. Ran for 5 years Thanks for letting us join you on this one 💙
@@jlhanlon1980 He played multiple Joker’s from the comics, pulling from different sources as well as creating new facets for the character. It’s not as simple as he was or wasn’t based on the comics. He even references the Beatles. It was a wonderful creation

Joker was sleeping with the bosses girl, thats why he set him up
Joker even says: You set me up over a woman. A WOMAN!
The first song Prince learned how to play on a piano was the Batman theme song from the 1960s TV series!
Love Michael Keaton’s role as Batman
