I think the Nolan flics did a lot right, but the original captured that comic book, early industrial era America feel. On the other hand, Batman is supposed to have a no killing rule but Burtons Batman greases everybody. I guess this Batman is my favorite because the Batman comics of the 80s had that 1920s style that Burton integrated into his movie. And Nicholson scared the hell out of 9 year old me in the theaters, and I wasnt the only one. Out of all the Jokers, this one is the most intimidating.

I know I'm in the minority but this is the best Batman movie, in my opinion. Obviously nostalgia has a big part to play. But the basis of a grounded Joker wouldn't be what it is without this movie. Also certain shots and mannerisms wouldn't be a thing without Jack Nicholson's version. The dark, doomed feeling that the city was given almost being a character itself started with this movie. Keaton brings an uncertain personality to Bruce's character that I don't think has been matched. Everything else people say is based on the lack of action or CGI, which was limited at that time. I just love this movie!

@@incognito7039 I grew up reading comics (DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse), and Batman was one of my favorites. Anyways, I don't even want to get started on TDK, I saw it in theaters twice and I loved it, but that changed after a lot of thought into the character portrayal. Anyways, I too prefer Nicholson's version, because it is more comic book accurate, apart from him killing Bruces' parents. Ledger just played a psychopath wearing makeup, but without the quirks/props of the Joker, besides the laugh.

Parents complained that the film was too violent and depressing, prompting McDonald's to pull the promotion, losing millions of dollars. Michael Biehn said on his podcast that the final auditions were between Keaton/Biehn for Batman and Jack/Robin Williams for Joker. Burton paired them off with eachother to find who he liked more. Jack was chosen because he had a more sinister edge, but Burton loved Robin and had planned to use him as the Riddler in the 2nd sequel. Burton left the Batman series due to issues with the studio after Batman Returns and both Keaton and Robin Williams left as well. And that's how the Riddler went to Jim Carrey.

Everyone was there. Arnold and Maria, Bruce and Demi, John Fogarty, Kurt Russell, Shaq, and about 2300 other A listers and sports heroes.
I was out by the big round hottub collecting trash and glasses when someone behind me said, "hey sport, you got a light?"
I turned around and he was standing there holding a doob. He was super cool and he seemed genuinely impressed when I wasn't talking about Batman, but Chinatown and one flew over the cukoos nest. We smoked and talked for about 20 minutes.

In the comics, Joe Chill, a common street mugger, was responsible for killing Bruce's parents. When they made this movie, they took some liberties and made it the Joker to create a more definitive connection between the two... the Joker unintentionally created Batman by killing Bruce's parents and Batman unintentionally created the Joker by letting him fall into the vat of toxic waste.
Fun fact, with Batman's first appearance in Detective Comics #27, he straight up murders a guy by punching him into a vat of acid. He also used to regularly carry a gun. But as time went on, that was historically retconned into Bruce not killing anyone and rarely using guns.... except in this movie, when he blows up a factory and tries to take out the joker with the Batwing. 🤫

His name alone gave the movie serious weight, because up to that point Michael Keaton was known for only comedic roles and Kim Basinger (who played Vicky Vale) wasn’t yet a household name. There were other stars of old in the movie also. Also, Prince did all original songs for the movie.

there was very nearly a 3rd one with him....with Robin Williams as Riddler and Bill Dee Williams becoming two-face. (Robin was a finalist to play The Joker in this movie, but lost out to jack. Burton liked him so much they had a rain check agreement for him to be The Riddler. when Burton left batman Keaton and Robin left with him)

So glad you guys decided to watch Batman.
I hope you continue on to Batman Returns; I think you’ll both like it a little bit more now that you have the dark campy comedy layout of Gotham and the characters.
I’m That Mom who was constantly scouting out stores for Batman action figures, accessories, comics, clothing, bedding, posters, lunch boxes, costumes, boots, utility belts, decorations, etc for Christmases and Birthdays for our son.
You should have seen his face when he saw the motorized Batmobile we got him one year; He drove it around the neighborhood with grin from ear to ear.
A lot of time, love and money was spent to bring joy to our kids over the years, but they’ve made some of the best memories I still hold onto.
Anywho… thanks for jumpin’ in and for the nostalgia this movie evoked.
    Loved watching with ya.

That means Tim Burton's (Williams') version of Two-Face/Harvey Dent would've been off the chain. If he hadn't made Batman Returns so weird and violently dark. And lost the franchise to other directors.

*"Ever dance with the devil by the pale moonlight?" is one of those movie lines that always sticks in your head. And it really feeds into the amount of insanity Jack Nicholson put into playing The Joker.*
*On another note, I would really love to have a Lego set based on the 1989 Batmobile. I got the 1960s TV show Batmobile two Christmases ago as a gift. I love it, but a movie Batmobile would look amazing in my collection too.*

I heard that the reason why Prince was involved in this film is because Jack Nicholson was a huge fan. He kept asking and asking for Prince to do the soundtrack, and they relented.
Unfortunately, Billy Dee Williams will be recast with Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever.
