Hi Mike, thank you for the video and saving us a lot of time! For those who are asking about losing access to the tp-link router/ bridge after saving the setting, I was in the same boat but I found this simple solution to work. I checked the IP range the main router with internet access uses for dhcp, and assigned the tp-link bridge with something within that range rather than sticking with default 192.168.0.x range as shown on the video. That's it! many home routers use default subnets like 192.168.100.0/24, or 10.10.10.0/24. in this case my home router uses 192.168.1.0/24 range, so I assigned an un-used IP in that range to the tp-link bridge - lets say, 192.168.1.188/24. This allows you to still connect to the tp-link router even when its in bridge mode. because technically speaking you are still connected to the main network (router with internet), so the main router should have a way to reach the tp-link bridge. that's only possible if they are both using the same range. Hope this helps!

Have not heard that. But I did hear a lot of people saying they would have to repeat the setup process after power loss so you may want to check the pinned comment. I cannot say I disagree with your TP Link sentiment... The only TP Link product I am running currently is a 24 port switch. But If I need a hard connection RJ45/Ethernet in my garage I use the Archer. I was originally using this method for running a mining farm in my garage but all the Bitmain miners required a cable and it was easier to bridge than to run adapters for each rig. Hope this keeps ya solid into the future.
@@MikeNovelli You helped me out big time, thanks. TP Link left the last step out of their documentation, not good. I'm on the air now bridging a POE camera to the 'net - whew! @@datapro007 yep. I'm currently using a Netgear Nighthawk gaming "router" as an AP for WiFi because of the coverage it offers. If it does then sometimes I'm willing to deal with the pain to get stuff done.
It has a feature named "Lock to AP" in WDS Bridging. What does it do? Should I enable it? For context: We have a different main router and bought a tp link router for its parental control features. I use the main router for online gaming. Edit: Your video helped me a lot with navigation.
Lock to AP just means that it will "lock onto" the single Access Point you connect to even if there is another Access Point with the same credentials, SSID and Password, in range. It basically means it will only connect to the one wireless device to get its signal. Unless you have another AP with the same name and password I would just leave it off. community.tp-link.com/en/home/stories/detail/514

In recent version when connected using 5ghz wds option channel is set as fixed value which is same as master router but problem with this is when my main router gets restart this channel gets changed to some other value so repeater doesn't work until reconfigure it. Cannot change channel as auto in c6 as that option appearing as disabled post was bridge
I have tried every step but if I try to enable 5GHz WDS I can't find my own network. I can how ever find the 2.4GHz but I would like to have the 5GHz. I use an Archer A7. I turned off the option Smart WIFI on my modem that links the 2.4 and 5 GHz network. I turned of the 2.4 GHz but still can't find my 5GHz network when I click survey. I however can find it on my laptop in my WIFI list, but there is no network.
5Ghz has lower penetration. Try moving closer to the source router to see if you can find the signal at a shorter distance or with less instructions between you and the access point.

Do both routers need to have the WDS option? Should I keep trying, or is it impossible without both client, and host, having the WDS option?
You need to make the one without the main router connecting to the modem and use the one with WDS to extend the first router. The first router is just broadcasting the WiFi SSID so it doesn't need it.
@@MikeNovelli Ok, that's what I've been trying without success. I'll keep trying since you say it is possible. -- Thanks for the reply, and your video.

@@MikeNovelli I solved my problem. The TP-Link Archer A7 (the client with WDS), has three WDS modes (Auto/1/2). I've found that, if the host router is WDS capable, mode 2 is used, and for host routers that are not WDS capable, such as my host, a TP-Link AX3000, then Mode 1 provides better compatibility. The difference in the modes, is the number of MAC address they use to complete the WDS connection. Mode 1 uses 3 MAC address, while Mode 2 uses 4 MAC addresses. The auto mode obviously doesn't always work. As soon as I changed from auto, to mode 1, it started working. -- Your tip on bridging & turning on the Ethernet ports also helped.

I just purchased a TP-Link AX1800 (Archer AX20) and I was wondering if it is any different if I want to hardwire into the WAN port. My internet comes into another building with a main router there (Starlink) and then I have an 800 foot point to point system to my house so “hard wiring” is my only way to project wifi through my house. Any help or input would be much appreciated. Thanks
If by hard wire you mean running an ethernet cable to the RJ45 connector then you shouldn't have to worry about any of this. The router will use the built in switch to act like a normal switch for anything connected to the ethernet ports and the router can send a signal to act as a wireless access point on the same network if it is hard wired back to the original source. If you mean that you want to use the ethernet ports on the back of the router to receive signal but have the router connect to the network of a different device wirelessly then yes, the last step that they forgot should enable you to plug into the RJ45 ports with an ethernet cable and connect to the network/internet. Hope this helps.
Ok thank you. I will see what happens once I receive my new router. I am just having problems with two routers on the same system currently and I am getting a double nat signal so I heard that bridge mode on the second router will prevent but my current second router does not have that option. Hi, thanks for the video. But I am facing problem here with my Archer C6 AC1200 bridging to Airtel Xstream Router. After bridging everything works fine, but after power down (both routers power down), when my Archer router power back up it shows no net connection. I had to manually reset it everytime because of that. And also I can't access the GUI of my Archer router. I've changed it multiple times, like .50, .69 (like your's), .100 , but it doesn't give me access to my Archer router. It just says this address cannot be reached.
@@vrockandpop yeah. The version of that archer c6 router was v3.2. So for that version, I had to set the channel as static in the airtel router's 5g network (I was bridging the 5g network, so I set the channel as 44 in the airtel router) and it was working fine then. I was getting some random speed drop to 0kbps issue after that but it worked good for the rest of the time. But in March 2023 the archer c6 v3.2 router stopped working. After a restart it came online and asked for a firmware update, I clicked on yes and left the router for 1 hour. But after the update, the bridging scan stopped showing any networks (both 2.4 and 5). I tried everything, flashing old firmware, smacking it, trying to see if it detects any other hotspot's network, but it didn't. The wired PPoE connection worked fine when I put the LAN wire in it, but my main priority was bridging. So I bought a new archer c6 but this time it was v4. Now the bridging works great and I set the channel to auto in my airtel router and it still worked. I'm also currently not getting random speed dropped to 0kbps issues after using the v4 as bridging.
Hello Mike, Thank you for this clear and concise explanation !! But I do not understand one thing. What is the utility of what you did at 2:56 ? You chose the 5ghz frequency for Wireless Bridging so the 2,4ghz is useless, isn't it ? I do not understand the "broadcasting" term you used I think ... Can you give me more details about that ? Thanks !
Broadcasting as in sending the signal out. You can choose either the 5 or the 2.4 but not both. Some older routers may only have 2.4 Whichever you choose is the signal that is going to be bridged and since 5Ghz should be a faster connection I use the 5. But the 2.4 is likely to penetrate further. If you are going thru a bunch of walls or when you survey you see 5Ghz connection much weaker than the 2.4Ghz you might want to choose the 2.4 However, the 2.4 on my main router is still broadcasting. Whichever you choose will not preclude the original router from broadcasting that other signal.
Do you know for any fix for the SSID of my main router not appearing when I survey for WDS bridging? I’ve tried everything and nothing seems to answer my question

Began with the Linksys WRT styles way back when and have used a ton of different brands. They can all be a pain, but the most important thing is whether it accomplishes what it needs to.

Hello Mike,
Thank you for this clear and concise explanation !!
Some older routers may only have 2.4
Whichever you choose is the signal that is going to be bridged and since 5Ghz should be a faster connection I use the 5. But the 2.4 is likely to penetrate further. If you are going thru a bunch of walls or when you survey you see 5Ghz connection much weaker than the 2.4Ghz you might want to choose the 2.4
However, the 2.4 on my main router is still broadcasting. Whichever you choose will not preclude the original router from broadcasting that other signal.
Thanks so much man, was trying to do this for 4 days, you helped alot
You're welcome!
Thank you, Mike , please suggest after bridging , if the main router is switched off and on , then it is not working

Hi mike i know im to late to aske this question
How ever i would like to find out if it possible to run the AX73 on a bridge mode with any LTE router, i dont have a fiberline in my area except LTE
Thanks
Sorry I am not familiar with that model. Give it a try and see what happens. Or try looking up that model online.
@@MikeNovelli hi mike thank you for your reply
I think the most important question i wanted to find out was if it possible to do this whole process between any LTE router as a main router and TPLink as a range extender
Thanks
@@nkosenhlekumalo I believe that if you can find the WiFi signal and SSID with the survey it should work.
@@MikeNovelli thank you mike 🙏🙏🙏
Hi Mike
Thanks heaps for taking the time to post this. It was very helpful & informative.
I found using the RESET button helpful and notice a weird thing - when I reset my Archer D7 AC1750 to factory defaults - I can see IPTV options - whereas in my previous configuration I must have somehow unchecked this and could see NOT see the IPTV ports.
P.S. Not a criticism - but I also could not hear the audio on my iPhone or Laptop (with both my laptop volume & youtube both turned up to maximum volume). I had to cast to my TV and crank up volume in order to hear it.
Glad it helped. Sorry about the volume. I'll check TH-cam studio to see if I can boost the gain.
Should i use 5ghz mode or 2.4ghz as all i want this to do is help me play games and get good network in a room far away from main router
@@prateek5792 it all depends. 5Ghz is faster, but 2.4Ghz will penetrate better. If you can get your 5Ghz signal to be strong enough I would use that. But if it's weak, then maybe try 2.4Ghz.
hello. please help me. when i hit survey, i cant detect the network that i want to connect. why is that? the network that i want to connect is available on my phone but i cant detect the network using the survey search . any tips? thank you in advance
Are you trying to connect to 2.4 or 5GHz? Make sure you have the correct one selected before surveying. You may also need to move closer to the Access Point in order to receive the signal.
@@MikeNovelliim trying to connect to 5ghz one.. i able to detect my neighbor 5ghz wifi but i cant detect my own 5ghz signal from my own router in my house
I just bought archer x72 bt it doesnt have this or wds.. is it hidden feature?
@@Misty-lt3bt probably not. They probably have a different type of bridging on that model.
@@MikeNovelli i went each option i dnt find wds.. it seems it doesnt support wds.
@@Misty-lt3bt you probably should check with TP-Link if it is not in the manual for your specific model.
Thank you MR MIKE i have the same router like yours and it was easy you are a brilliant person
🙏
Thanks buddy. Helped me a lot. Espeecially the last missing step. Greetings from Germany
Heck yeah. Good work. I haven't been back to Germany since I was 16, but man did we have fun then!!
Glad it helped ya
It works very well but only the problem i have I cannot login to router and change the wifi password this is annoying every time i have to reset and again go through all this process plz help how i can chnge password with out all this process thanks alot
I'm not really sure what you are referring to. Which password? The one to log into the router or the one that the SSID uses? On the bridged router or the main router?
So I followed everything and got it working but now I can't access the login screen/settings anymore.
It likely moved to the new IP address. You can always reset and get in again
@@MikeNovelli No, I figured out the new IP address through CMD/IPconfig, still can't. I can't even access it through the Tether app on my phone.
Reset
@@MikeNovelli I reset and redid everything on the video for like 3 times now. Same result.
TP Link need to reward you big time! Thanks. Have you ever tried connecting a Bit Defender Box 2 to your network? It requires you own wifi router to be in bridge mode, My TP-Link Deco P9 mesh setup wouldn't work in Bridge Access Point mode because I didn't do the above. Now need to retry following about steps.
I have never tried a Bit Defender box. Sorry.
Good luck!
Can this method be used to make the to link router as a client so I can connect my ethernet devices to the wireless of my main router?
Yes
Thank you. They definitely forgot that last step. I needed this :)
Hell yeah Melody! Glad it helped.
I can't find system parameters in my tp link archer ax12. Is there anyway to bridge my router?
I would check the manual and then search support or contact TP Link if that doesn't help you
Is this for if you want to use the router as wifi to ether adapter? So router connecte to wifi and pc connects to router connected to wifi?
It can work that way. It catches a wifi signal from another access point and makes it usable via wifi or the thernet rj45 jacks built into the device.
Thanks, but I'm having a problem. My speed is 350mbs and after setting up the archer as repeater the speed is worse ~60-70 mbps. Any idea why?
Because you are sending the signal thru 2 connections most likely.
When my 2nd router restart, no internet connection in my Pc please how to resolve it
See the pinned comment
@@MikeNovelli can you please help how to assign ip in my 2nd router and how to check ip of my 1st router.
@@C_P369 you can use ipconfig to check your main access point IP. Open a terminal (windows key then type CMD) then type "ipconfig" and hit enter. You should have IPs listed.
You are setting the 2nd IP yourself so you can choose this #. Again I would refer to the pinned comment.
I would be surprised if your IP is not default set to 192.168.0.1
Please make video on it as it will help alot
Can I use same SSID for my bridge router as my main? Will it cause any collision or problems?
You can try it but it might cause issues with knowing which one you're connected to.
Can you after you put al these settings, just unplug your 'extender' and put it in another room ?
I believe you should be able to. But try it and see if it works. If not you might have to do it in place. Which would also mean that anytime it loses power you would have to reconfigure. But I do believe it is persistent even after power loss. Sorry I couldn't provide a more accurate answer. But if you feel like it come back and leave a comment if it worked or not.
someone please help me i’ve followed all these steps but the extension doesn’t show up in my wifi settings after all of the steps are followed.
@@Senquility make sure your device is capable and check to see if it has a different method or gui interface for that option
@@MikeNovelli i’ve tried it on 3 separate devices (iphone macbook and windows laptop. i feel like there’s a setting that turns off that specific wifi, since the 5G connections are still turned on
@@MikeNovellihi yes,
it does say that the network is off. not exactly sure how to turn it on :( i did up to the survey part where it disappears .
also, on the status page where you tell us WDS Status should say Run: at the top, my wifi picture is YELLOW not blue. not sure why.
@@Senquility yeah you are not going to be able to see the 5G and the 2.4 at the same time. Choose the 2.4 if that's what you are trying to do find a few steps before that, then survey for it
Can i apply the same process for archer c6 ac 1200?
I don't have that one but it should be a similar process if not the same
archer ax50 don't have WDS option how can i do that ?
It might be buried in another menu. Sorry, but you'll likely have to discuss it with TP-Link support.
I'm hoping someone can help me here, I followed these steps exactly for my 5GHz network but my WDS status is showing as ASSOC and isn't working. The only difference I had in my setup was the survey didn't show my network, I had to manually enter in my SSID and MAC address and I'm certain they are correct. Additionally, I tried this exactly but with my 2Gz network instead and it worked fine, the problem with that of course is my 2GHz is a fraction of the speed of my 5GHz and completely useless for me.
Try moving closer to the source. 2.4 will penetrate deeper than 5Ghz band. You need to see it when surveying. If you enter it manually it seems like you aren't actually connecting.
Thank you from Colombia.
You are welcome from Chicagoland!
After the router restarts i have to old the resett button for a few second and go through this again, daily. Any way to prevent this ?
See the pinned comment. It should alleviate that issue
@@MikeNovelli oh damn i didnt see that, thanks mate
Is there a way to configure the router again after changing it to bridge mode? I can no longer connect to the tp-link UI. I want to change a few settings, what do i do?
Try hard resetting it and it will go back to default. There should be a button or a hole you can stick a paperclip thru to press and hold. You will be setting it up like a new machine.
Otherwise find the current IP and try connecting to it that way. Or if you have enabled the RJ45 Ethernet ports you can try plugging into one of them and see if you can connect that way.
@@MikeNovelli Yeah i found that, but i need to reset it everytime i need to change something? The current IP just takes me to my source router, and doesn't show me settings for the Bridge router
@@sinchan3109 use the IP address you setup.
@@sinchan3109 then it seems like you will have to reset to make changes prior to bridging
Can we do bridge in TL-WR850N???
🤷🏼♂️ I don't work for TP Link. Maybe try search/Google or contacting them.
When I look it up on their website under the "Specifications" tab it says in "Wireless Functions" section 'WDS Bridge' so I think you have the ability. Whether the process is the same or not I could not say. Give it a try and see what happens.
@@MikeNovelli Oh Ok Thank you bro ❤️
Thanks a ton for giving a heads up to turn on the LAN ports. I did the same steps as mentioned by you and the ports work fine on my TP-Link Archer AC1200 that I use as a repeater.

Does TP link ac1200 support wireless repeater mode as tp link 841??
@@The888Generation I'm not sure about 841 but my Archer AC1200 works well as a repeater.
