Great analysis. I think the oboe accents at the beginning work (you talk about at 6:45 in the video) like the horns did earlier because the horns were stopped, which makes a buzzy sound that's somewhat similar to oboes.
Great observation, I think you're totally right on that!!
This was very informative! Its interesting how much of music can be overlooked even when whats happening is fairly simple. Its obvious in retrospect how the insturments switch roles at the start but as a listener you get swept up in the music and dont realize exactly whats bring done.

I have played the horn for 25 years and have never heard about what you say about the «sound equivalent» 😂 It makes sense, to some extent in an orchestral setting, since we usually point backwards and then the sound gets projected back into the hall. But for studio recording / amplified sessions it feels very different. I think having the mic fairly close, for obvious purposes, makes the horn sound a lot more «trombone-y». Great content, Zach!
(Stopped horn probably reduces the sound equivalent to 1/8 or so, by the way, but I’m just guessing here 😆)

Mr. Heyde, would you do a score study on a concerto like Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 (the I. adagio-moderato). I'd love to get your analysis on writing arrangements/orchestration in support of a solo instrument. I know it's not very film-related but figured I'd ask. :)

I know it's a bit cliche by now, but I'd be interested to hear your study of Holst's Mars and/or Jupiter pieces...
Also, I always found Goldsmith's Star Trek: First Contact theme a wonderful detour from the (stereo)typical theme up to that point... One of the best reimaginings and wonderfully done in the context of a "first contact" story..
Love this! I suggest Smetana's Moldau next, though it's 13 minutes so it might be a bit long.
