Vocal ANALYSIS of VoicePlay's New Release "In The Hall Of The Mountain King"

  • VoicePlay not only has had a knack for creating utterly amazing compositions to some pretty nerdy stuff, but sometimes they create an all vocal arrangement of classic takes that just knock my socks off. This one in particular, which I have some operatic experience with in my past, has left me literally stunned. And of course, I had to come in character. ;-)
    Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to VoicePlay performing "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" for the first time.

      Elizabeth, this piece is so insanely good. Voiceplay always does great stuff, but this is next-level good on a technical level. The amount of varying vocal techniques, chord structures, vocal acting.. this is damn near a masterclass on vocal theater.

    Saw voiceplay's video and started watching it, then saw this video at the top of the list on the side, and immediately thought "How did this video premier 30 minutes after the music video premiered?!" Given that it's 25 minutes long, that would have been crazy to get the files uploaded to youtube that quick.
    Then you say you got early access, and its nice to see how the barrier between the artists and the listeners are broken down when it comes to voiceplay, and how much they must have enjoyed your reactions to their videos.

    SAVATAGE ''in the hall of the mountain king'' much better version and of course completely different style. Once again Elizabeth do a vocal analysis of any Savatage song such as '' When The Crowds Are Gone'' and you will remember me, they are now very close to your operatic style of music with Trans Siberian Orchestra (another review for the future).

    I am so happy to see this-I worried that now that they’re back to doing live gigs, they were going to stop putting as much into videos (the last couple releases were great, but not the huge cosplay kind of thing we’ve seen so much of-which is a big part of what I love about them. It’s nice to know they’ll still go all out for those of us who can only watch on video.
    The other thing I just love about this is that we’re hearing things from every one of these guys that we’ve never heard before-who knew Eli could growl like that, or that Cesar could make all those wild sounds, or that Layne could not just sing, but sing in so many different voices, or that Geoff could make that lovely classical sound (gah-I want MORE of that! 🥰).
    I checked out Liz’s TikTok since I’d never heard of her and so I came in knowing she had a great voice, but OMG. More of her, too, please!
    Loved this reaction-your giggles are priceless! (BTW, surely what we’re hearing was sung in studio, without all the makeup, but I’d love to hear what it sounded like on the set when they were doing the video-you’re probably right that the prosthetics made for quite a different listening experience.)

    Fantastic reaction and I learned a lot! I also learned a lot from the heads up that Geoff gave on the Patreon page. There is a YT channel called Classics Explained that tells the story of this musical piece. I’ve heard this music all my life but never knew the story behind it. It did help me figure out what the heck was going on. I was so confused! Entertained and impressed, but confused. Your perspective as an opera singer and vocal coach just added that much more richness to the piece for me.
    I have watched this countless times. In addition to the amazing music and the crazy make up, props have to go out to Layne for not only arranging this, but dragging in those trees to appear in the foreground. Apparently he went out and cut them down.🪚
    But also props to Eli for the lighting. Especially the end when they all disappear. Each character has their own color. It may seem like a really minor thing, but to those of us who learn visually it’s just the icing on the cake.

    • @havtor007
      @havtor007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What is going on is that the human in the story is walked in on the trolls (Norwegian trolls is of many kinds) and the song is them talking about how they will murder and eat them.
      Not really hard to find out as there literally is a theater piece this comes from called Peer Gynt where this music is specifically made for.

      Hall of the mountain king is a music piece from the Theater play Peer Gynt it was composed by Edcard Grieg in 1876 for that play.

    Well, now you just have to do a breakdown of Savatage's version! Such a fantastic piece of music though - when you're starting with something that good, and add the ridiculous amount of talent these guys have, the end result is always going to be spectacular.

    Hal of the Mountain King has been covered by several rock/metal bands, but you might enjoy the version by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow - his wife Candice Night (who he has another group with called Blackmore's Night - worth checking out) wrote lyrics for it that fit really well. My only sadness about it is that it wasn't recorded during the Dio years as Ronnie would have taken it to a whole different level.

    When thinking about storytelling in a capella versions of instrumental music, the first videos that came to my mind where Libertango by the Swingles and the Root Beer Rag by the Wise Guys. But now, I have to extend this list, and Voiceplay might even take the top spot.

    I love how excited you got listening to them! This song is definitely one of my favorites from an orchestral side, but the voices give it a different (warmer, more personal, maybe?) feature.
    The masks in the trees in the background are Lock, Shock and Barrel from their Nightmare Before Christmas video "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" (featuring Rachel Potter).

    Just throwing a suggestion or two out there for two of the greatest voices you haven't reacted to: Dolores O'Riordian and LiSA. You should definitely check them out, even on your own time, if you have never heard either (you've most likely heard the Cranberries?), but I'd especially love to hear what you have to say about them both. For LiSA, I recommend one of her performances on First Take (the whole series of First Take is fantastic), and of those, "Homura" in particular. For Dolores, I recommend her cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way" as it is acoustic, and so personal, but there's a few things to choose from for live performances.

    I stumbled across your channel somehow, can't quite recall how, but watching you brings me no small amount of joy. I find you delightfully quirky and passionate, engaging and knowledgeable. I have a high school classmate who is a trained opera singer, so I absolutely shared your channel with her via Facebook. I also have a brother & sister-in-law who sing in their church choir, so I also shared your channel with them.

    Another great reaction. Always an adventure when the horns come out. Love it! I have a request. I know you have your content planned out well in advance 'cause that's what makes you the fabulous pro that you are. But Austin and Rob from Home Free just dropped something new and we are all going to need to get your take on it. The fellas are singing opera, actual opera. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/5dBENngNDhs/w-d-xo.html. I'm hoping for some insight on their phrasing and pronunciation as I've heard that is critical for the style. Also hoping you can squeeze it in quickly as it released just hours ago. Thanks for considering. This will completely make my day. ❤

    I enjoy watching your reactions and analysis because you have so much fun with them! On the prosthetics affecting things - wouldn't they have recorded this in a studio first? I'm sure the prosthetics would not be around for that. I'd hazard a guess that they actually sing along with their recording to get the lip sync right for the video, so perhaps they experienced a bit of strangeness then.

    • @lschoenrank
      @lschoenrank 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going to say the same thing. This would be recorded in the studio first with no makeup or prosthetics, and then when doing the video they'll sing while doing the actions, but just to get the motions right.
