Women are more emotional and prone to acting out irrationally in a tense situation. A truly level headed man would probably attack the rapist and try to knock him out or apprehend him if possible, not beat him to a pulp.
Even if he gets away the son knows his name and where he lives so he can't hide from the police. People who do these things may have mental problems or have been abused by parents or family or something, you can't kill them, let them do time for the crime and get help. For all you know the rapists father could be a rapist too or worst yet a drug dealer and when he finds out what lengths you went to near annihilate his son, imagine what he'll do to you if he gets his hands on you.

I think that, and the son is a good boy. He’s kind, and no matter what, good people don’t want to see other people die. People do horrible things, and I usually don’t see victims wish death upon their attackers. I know that that started this boy on his path to healing, because a huge part of emotional healing is forgiveness. To forgive isn’t to say that it’s okay, but just to release the burden of anger. I hope that he makes it through this trauma, and I think that the son was protecting both of them. What an amazing person...
