  • Painting quartered Space Marines can seem daunting, but like any other project it doesn't need to seem impossible if you've got a plan in mind for how to tackle it! READ MORE:
    The Howling Griffons are an awesome Chapter and absolutely iconic - when you say 'quartered Marines,' someone's almost invariably going to mention them immediately. With just a little thought in your preparation and the right paints and primers, you can make this a far easier task than it might seem otherwise.

    Yellow: hard to paint good because the pigments are always either gritty or translucent.
    Red: hard to paint because the highlights either look pink or orange.
    Sledgehammer: Why not both?

    Have you considered using Contrast paints for this? I actually really like the red and yellow ones, and it might be easier than trying to use thin layer paints.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trying to get a straight line would become much more difficult, in my experience with Contrast. The colours are certainly very vibrant and the shading is taken care of, but tidying up any mistakes would rely on reapplying Wraithbone from the pot, which never seems to give quite the same finish as the primer spray. I'm sure it's not impossible, but I think it'd need a much steadier hand than I have!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except for some very hard to see parts under the pack, it's actually not very difficult to set up the center line. It'd take more time to paint the miniature in parts and then assemble.

    I remember the colour scheme from teh 2nd Edition 40K books. Loved it at the time and still do. Top effort this with great tips as usual. Have you considered getting an airbrush for those base coats? When I realised how much I was spending on rattle cans I thought actually an airbrush, even a cheapo one, is a great little investment.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've actually got an airbrush, it just doesn't see much use. It's a bit of a hassle with my current setup to get it out, plug in the compressor, make room for all the gumpfh... I'll get to flashing around what one can manage with an airbrush eventually, but I figure rattle cans are a little more accessible to most even if the price does add up fairly quickly to airbrush and compressor set territory!

    • @huwtindall7096
      @huwtindall7096 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio ah nice! Certainly a useful tool and the learning curve isn't too bad, especially if you're just doing base coats. They've been around for ages so I wonder if back in the day the GW 'eavy metal did actually use those old red and yellow paints with a brush to achieve the results? Would have been 15 thin coats!

  • @TheWolfDude91
    @TheWolfDude91 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure but perhaps painting the parts while dissasembled might be a quicker option, you can get a squad of these in parts, cover one side of the part for all of them and just spray paint and repeat for the other.... that way you can get the whole squad much faster I think and as for the mistakes or details you can always fix them later on

    Very nice result. Good tip on spraying Demonic Yellow over Skeleton Bone. Always impressed at how well the Marine Juice works. I did some mucking about with mixing washes off the back of seeing it and Aly's Brown Liquid. Haven't quite nailed a mix for the Napoleonics yet - shading yellows, blues and whites in one go inevitably leads to compromise.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, some of the 'all in one' solutions do work better for some armies than others. The Marine Juice seems to be the best compromise between shading and a bit of subtle warmth in the recesses. Dark enough that it'd work on Ultramarines, but with enough tint that it works pretty well over both red and yellow? Bonus. I think Aly's Brown Liquid is probably the one that sees more use since it's not dark enough to stain things like wood and metal quite so much. I can all-over shade with the brown stuff, then go back to metal and similar with another shade to darken that out a bit more.
