How T0-B1 Explores the Internal Struggle of Becoming a Jedi

  • T0-B1 is about a droid's journey to becoming a Jedi. It's not exactly subtle, but it is a good exploration into what it actually means to be a Jedi when compared to the adventure and excitement we so often fantasize about. Here are my thoughts on this Star Wars: Visions short.

    So, for whatever it's worth, this episode's aesthetic and themes were heavily inspired by Osamu Tezuka, creator of Astro Boy, and several other properties that explored the relationship between robots and humans, and what it means to be human or a 'real person'. So that's why it 'had to be' a droid.

    The AstroBoy connection is an important aspect of the short, it's one of the more direct influences of anime among all the stories. I think the background drawings on the walls are also unique and draw from all sorts of Star Wars stories.

    Why a droid you ask? Because it's inspired in Astroboy. Even the name T0-b1 comes directly from Tobi, which was the name of the kid from where the robot Astroboy comes from. The doctor also reminds me of the builders of Astroboy.
    It has some Megaman stuff as well.

    If youre looking at the fact that iiit is based around Astro boy, I think the implication is that T0-B1 was a human [a padawan to the man] and was rebuilt as a cyborg. So it doesnt break cannon since Vader/Luke can use the force even with their machine parts.
    I think its also implied because his name used to be Toby and why else would the man just build a child droid otherwise? I think the Master lost his padawan and arms and in gried rebuilt T0-B1 to cope,

    I think the idea of a force sensitive droid, canon or not, is a neat idea. It gives the idea that the force resides in everything, not just organic beings. Those that are willing to learn from it can use it. If a droid is willing to learn, then maybe he could use it but maybe not as strong as an organic being.

    I saw a headcanon saying that Mitaka was a Jedi who survived Order 66 and T0-B1 was his Padawan who didn’t survive, but his soul remained inside the kyber crystal. Yes, a droid being Force-sensitive is off by a canon-brained fan like me, but Visions taught me to unlearn what I learned.

    Honestly I love the idea of a force sensitive droid. It expands how the force works and takes it away from the physicality that mediclorians brought and back to the spiritual nature of the OT Force. Also it kind of expands on the tragedy of the droids, proving that they’re actually sentient and have living souls, yet are treated like nothing.

    When it comes to similarities between plot beats, character archetypes, and themes, I like to believe a reason for 9 episodes of Visions is that they can correlate with the Skywalker Saga (even though it’s just coincidence and the same Visions short can share solidarity with more than one movie - but hear me out!) I believe I cracked the code on which Visions episode is a soul partner with their Star Wars Episode:
    The Duel => The Empire Strikes Back
    Tatooine Rhapsody => Return of the Jedi
    The Twins => The Last Jedi
    The Village Bride => Attack of the Clones
    The Ninth Jedi => The Force Awakens
    T0-B1 => A New Hope

    Uh....T0B1A5(obviously Tobias)has a very dark origin as it was implied to have been a real youngling. But due to Jedi being hunted his living form was intentionally sacrificed and his essence transferred to the droid body with no recollection of this taking place. His master having protected him from detection within the Force. However the Force still called to T0B1A5 essence. We know this is possible through many canon related mediums. Essence transfer is historically an ancient and hidden Sith ability. Palpatine and Mother Talzin both had knowledge and ability with it. I feel that the plight of the droid is one that seriously needs representation within the Force and T0B1A5 is the first real full representation of it. Depending where this falls, if ever ventured to place within canon, it could be another venue sought after by Palpatine. T0B1 would be an awesome concept of a Jedi that could live to be as old or older than Master Yoda and have a far more accurate recollection and teachings of history, knowledge and events. One ive made record of and passed along to varying officials who present canon materials within the franchise.

    Lol I remember that Lucas talked about how the anti droid prejudice in episode 4 was an allegory for Jim Crow era discrimination against black people. So when I watched TOB-1, and like with L3-37 in Solo, I watched it from a more critical view which kept me engaged because everything I saw gave me personal “head canons” about what happened in this non canon Star Wars story.

    The way I saw this episode, it was geared for the younger kids watching, which isn't a bad thing at all, but I think just the visual designs, and particularly the sound design with everything making a noise was a little too much for me. I don't know. I have liked it more as I've watched, but I also can't really get past the Droid being a Jedi either. At the same time though, they never show him using the Force, he just has a lightsaber. As a robot, who says he can't jump the way he does? If he had pulled the lightsaber to him, then yeah, it would have been a bigger deal. But I ultimately just see it as a kid getting to live out the fantasy of being a Jedi. I can see plenty of kids loving this short and going on grand adventures around the house, in the backyard, and out at the park reenacting Tobi's journey, so I can't be mad at this short. It's ultimately not really for me, but there are things about it to still enjoy. Particularly the music, I really like the music.

    While many people have a problem with the idea of a droid jedi im the polar opposite. I've always had a big problem with the idea that droids, as sentient beings, are not connected at all to the force.
    We know that inanimate objects like the Kyber Crystals themselves can have a connection with the force so why not droids too?

    • @richh6001
      @richh6001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is debate in the scientific community that Crystals might be their own form of life due to the way they grow, so I think an argument can be made there.
      I personally don't really see too much issue with a force sensitive Droid, especially since it's a sentient being. The 4-LOM and Zuckas story in the old Tales of the Bounty Hunters book goes into this a little bit too.

    I know that Lucas, for his part, was heavily adamant that Droids can't be force sensitive but I for one want to see that rolled back significantly in canon. I like "What Measure Is a Soul" stories that you see in things like Ghost in the Shell and Ex Machina and the like and I would like to see, eventually, a droid use the force once it's allowed to truly be it's own personality and character. I would like to see The Force as an extension of Life, not necessarily organic life but sentient life. That Conciseness is what attracts and flows with the force not some measure of biometric function.

    I also liked the ways you can interpet his name, it's pronounced "T-Oh Be-One" obviously like Obi-Wan but my first thought about it was that it spelled out "To be one" as in "to be one with the Force", which also ties into his desire to be a Jedi

    I love the reviews, Visions, however, just wasn’t for me. A couple were alright, but i just found it tedious to get through. To each their own, and I’ll never judge someone on what Star Wars they like or dislike! Keep up the great work!

    This was actually my favourite story form all the visions stories, I know it's not the greatest story but for some reason or the other it resonated with me.
