      *_An open air hanger in the vacuum of space ? Doesn’t seem plausible_*
      An open air hangar in the vacuum of space, but sealed with a force shield? Very plausible, and extremely practical.
      Raising/lowering a shield to allow traffic in/out is much, much more efficient than cluttering the hangar bay with massive moving solid doors and the mechanisms to open/close them.
      In fact, how about this idea: A shield strong enough to trap pressurized gases, but weak enough to allow solid objects to pass through it. That way, no lowering/raising of shields is needed -- atmosphere stays trapped inside while allowing ships to pass in/out.

    • @Sherpaful
      @Sherpaful 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      What happens when they lower the shield? Why isn't everything in the hanger blown out into space.

    • @jomarico1770
      @jomarico1770 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Also since the Death Star has artificial gravity, you can also increase the gravity around the hanger to hold an atmosphere, same way the Earth's gravity holds the atmosphere down on our planet.

      One thing i love about Return of the Jedi is that it was the first Starwars movie i ever saw. While you might think that would have messed it up for me it acctually fed very well into the serial nature of the films. It felt like watching a random episode on TV. I knew the characters basically i knew the death star was a terrible weapon, and i knew that Vader was a bad guy, Luke was a good guy but beyond that it felt like jumping into a TV series and having to work out what is going on.

    I always liked the officers from the original trilogy: Grand Moff Tarkin, General Veers, Grand Admiral Piett, Moff Jerjerrod; they did their job with a cool, calm, collected efficiency. The officers of the First Order in the Disney Trilogy were angry, yelling red faced mustache twirlers. The original trilogy didn’t have to slap us over the head to remind us who the bad guys are.

      I feel the same about Young Anakin / Kylo Ren. In the prequels/sequels, they felt the need to make the bad guys whiny little children, which denies the the movies gravitas, and makes the whole conflict feel trite.

      True but one thing you forgot to consider the time. At that time SW came out every kid watched Nazi movies, it was a law that one WW2 movie had to be playing at all times from Noon to midnight. We didnt to be hit over the head with what bad guys are. Of course considering the current state of the USA. Many would watch those WW2 movies and ask why are the US troops on the wrong the side?

      @#sloths the empire has so many fans because it’s so well written. It doesn’t feel like a purely evil government, the evil is believable because many of the villains are people in positions of power or authority, and it makes sense for military officers to be strict and instill fear into their subordinates. But this level also helps us relate to the imperials. They’re doing a job, and they have bosses, just like us. It feels like an actual, real military system. The sequels and even the prequels failed to acknowledge proper military organization within Star Wars.

    Has anyone else noticed that the officer is actually having a conversation with Vader. He had the confidence to be honest with Vader that in order to meet the time tables he needed more resources. That suggests that he wasn't afraid to speak his mind and that Darth Vader actually did listen to his subordinates. There's also the case when the Millennium Falcon escapes and the Admiral on the Star Destroyer gets all nervous because he doesn't know how Vader will respond but Vader just walks off. That suggests that Vader didn't necessarily punish people for things that were outside of their control. Like he was somewhat Fair? If you were competent and you did your job, you didn't have to worry. But if you were incompetent you might get Force gripped to death.

    What I like most about this scene is how it sets up how very little power Darth Vader has compared to Palpatine. He has a grand entrance, the music swells, and people are in general fear of his presence. They have been all trilogy. But when the emperor shows up, he's got guards, a larger TIE escort, his entrance is easily 3 times larger than Vader's, and the man we've come to known as the deadliest villain in the galaxy for 2 films kneels to him. That's effective character development. With these two scenes alone the viewer immediately understands how much of a threat Palpatine is.

    This scene is absolutely masterful. After seeing a clip from the Rise of Skywalker - I had to come back here to remind myself of the Star Wars that I remember. There are so many parts to this scene that works. For instance:
    - The mysterious beginning, and the lead up to Darth Vader coming off the shuttle. By holding off for a minute or two, the filmmakers manage to build up the tension a little till the Reveal - and what a reveal it was! Darth Vader walking down the ramp was very memorable
    - The nervous Commander resonates with all of us who had to deal with bosses, project management, deadlines, and most of all pressure. The Empire wants results, we can tell immediately that fatal pressure is relentless. In the new Sequels, there is nothing of this, all 'bad guys' are crazy maniacs. However here, you get the sense the Empire is a system - a system of conformity, pressure and hierarchy.
    - Note how at the end, they even chose the Commander to not continue walking with Darth Vader, but to turn and head the other way. This distinguishes further how Darth Vader is superior, off to get results, and the Commander is pondering what to do, when to do it, with conflicting priorities. He has all the weight of the world on his shoulders. Darth Vader doesn't care.
    - There is also a seriousness to the sequence. There is a sense of procedure, with the Shuttle Docking sequence, of paranoia and importance with the TIE Fighter escort, and of hastily assembled ceremony, with the troops rushing out to present to their commanding officer. These all contribute to the amazing world that is built up here.
    Again, this 3 minute clip says so much, even looking beyond the script.

    • @Conservative4
      @Conservative4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      So I’ve been thinking about that. Think about the people that Vader force-choked (that we know of). The admiral from the first movie openly challenged him verbally and arrogantly mocked his results and abilities. Admiral Ozzel disobeyed key tactical orders, and seemed complacent. Other context clues show that js not the first time Ozzel disobeyed him. Director Krennec, if we want to include him, was a sniveling coward who wanted to be “in command” and his ambitions far outweighed his skill. So when Vader chokes a guy, we can see why he thinks they deserve it.
      Now this commander does *nothing* to challenge Vader- he walks the knife’s edge of telling him the truth as he sees it, “I assure you my men are working as fast as they can.” And telling hos boss what they want to hear while being dedicated “I tell you this station will be operational as planned.” He is a bit afraid, clearly, but not for no reason and clearly tries to stand his ground. I think Vader himself has no problem with the commander.
      It is the emperor who is displeased by the slightest inconvenience, no matter how reasonable or predictable. It is the emperor who unleashes Vader at will. It is the Emperor who thinks “I need to be able to kill more people, faster. I need a weapon that does that. And I’ll work my own people to death to build it.”

    When I was a kid in Primary school, our headmaster, Mr. Dewi Francis, looked like Moff Tarkin. One morning he stood at assembly in a grey suit and told us that there'd been issues with behaviour and that he'd brought in an 'old friend' to help promote discipline. On that cue, from one of the side doors strode Dave Prowse in full Darth Vader costume. He marched up to the stage and stood menacingly behind Mr. Francis with arms folded. I was about 8 at the time and I think it was the first time I said 'fuuuuuck' out loud infront of someone... my teacher, the elderly Ms. Griffith was sat right next to me and she agreed with 'Indeed'.
