I had a list of things to get through, so I had my oldest kiddo watch this and he wrote down the procedure, and then followed it exactly. You're a wonderful teacher, thank you for this!

I've heard about this! Nice to see a complete video on keeping berries fresh in the refrigerator.
Thanks for the info!
Awesome video! Thank you so much for sharing! 😍
Merry Christmas to you 2 & happy new year
Outstanding!❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!! Strawberry season is here in North Florida
Awesome! I love my strawberries and grapes.
I found you on Lisa’s podcast! Thank you for all that you do!
So glad that you found me and that my information is helpful. Thank you for your kind words!
I have been curious about this. Great to have it all in one place! Thank you!❤️

Awesome! Doing that now!
Thanks!
I just shared this with my husband! We will definitely try this
Thank you for sharing ❤️
I had to go back in my History and find your video, wow it works great. We bought Costco strawberries that day and di not have any bad berries in over a week. Great Hack thank you🎉❤
Found you just in time for farmer's market season!

Thank you for subscribing and watching. I appreciate it!
this is really nice video I'm watching thank you so much for sharing
You are welcome, thanks for watching
Ok thanx
Awesome! Hoping to never having to compost strawberries ever again!! Thank you!!
I clean all my produce in H2O and vinegar and it really does extend the life of the food.
I'm glad you are seeing the results as well! It's wonderful how well it works.
I've heard of a lot of people worried about not staining their wash clothes with make up and the best remedy that I've heard is to use black towels... they still stain, but it's hard to see because they're black. This might work for berries as well... if not black, maybe dark navy? (Personally, I use a roll of paper towels, maybe every couple of years. So I can afford to splurge.) 💖🌞🌵😷
Perfect title for book: "I bought it, now what?" That is EXACTLY what brought me here, I bought 9 baskets of strawberries from a guy when I only really wanted one or two. lol Now I know what to do! Although I also will be freezing half. Thanks for the great tip!
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️ that title we thought about for months. Have fun with your fresh strawberries.
@@TheCrossLegacy It worked! I filled 2 jars and the strawberries stayed fresh for 3 weeks!!!
The rest I washed and air dryed same way but froze them for smoothies.
Thank you Amy. I just listened to Cass's podcast with you & I am fascinated. I have wondered for quite some time why my onions & potatoes were going bad! I will be catching up on your channel. Like Cass, I think I am fan girl'in right now... lol. Glenda
New to your channel. I needed this video on Tuesday, sadly I came across it today Saturday. I got a box of strawberries from the food bank Tuesday. I let them sit out to ripen, they molded 😢. I salivating about a half pint out of 8 pints. You would think at 71 I would know these things. It just proves your never to old to learn something new. Thanks.
It is never too late to learn. I am glad that you found my channel now and I hope that you can learn a lot so that you never have to throw away produce again.
Thanx sooo much, i could not determine what should b done, i could not determine should i wash peppers/ capiscum beforehand or as required only
Il wash 1st, all your tips did work
Cảm ơn bạn
Where you stayed in Ubud? Love the pool
I was wondering after reading a lot of comments… what if I used a canning jar and over the top I put a paper towel then put the ring on- instead of the usual lid and ring. Would that help with condensation? With the bottom paper towel in place as well.
Are you having issues with condensation? Are you setting a timer while soaking and letting them air dry all of the way? The paper towel/ring idea might work for a short time but I don't know if it would give the same results if you want the berries to last.
Yes il search for it definitely, there's somethin else i need to know, strawberry can i remove stem an store
No, once the stem is removed they start to deteriorate they need to remain whole
Hi i got a pepper/ capiscum, i never physically cut it but i did use from there , i used only half
Store the unused half in a glass jar with a metal lid and it will stay fresh another week to 10 days.
Thanks I have managed to save my potatoes and apples , ( put my potatoes in airtight container in fridge) an same applies to my lettuce but I put lettuce in ziploc bag in fridge and cucumber also I put in ziploc in my fridge , so I just need to figure with my banana , an my apples I put in open air in fridge
You can search on my channel to find how I take care of those items, I also have a bestselling eBook bundle that has directions for 75 produce items! thecrosslegacyshop.com/
A big one for bananas is buying organic and keeping them away from any other produce. Apples also should be kept away from other produce, but they will last the longest in the fridge. I hope that helps!
Shall i cut it up and place in sealed container or is it better to keep as is an place in airtight container
Keep it whole in a glass jar for the best results
Hi can I use Tupperware an if i could do i need open or airtight one?
Glass will help them stay fresher longer. My strawberry jar currently has a plastic lid but I have used old pickle jars for years with metal lids. By washing them you are killing off the mold spores and harmful pathogens they will just last the longest in glass.
Do you cut the strawberries leaves off first before putting into the jar??
No, once you cut them they begin to deteriorate
I'm glad i found your video. I just bought some beautiful organic strawberries and I'm going to try this method. How do you tell when it's "bone dry", what are we looking for aside from no obvious water on them? I was also wondering, can i remove the leaves before washing & storing them? Does the vinegar change the taste of the strawberries? Thank you
They need to remain whole for them to last weeks, once they are cut they will lonely last a few days. Around 3 hours is normally how long I leave them out to dry
How about the pesticides that are sprayed on the strawberries and strawberries are the top sprayed fruit?
You can always grow your own and control what is on your food.
Amy do you do this only when strawberries are in season or do you continue to buy them year-round? I live in North Carolina and strawberries come and season for some thing like a month or two I believe so if you keep them for three weeks it seems like he would get 6 to 9 weeks worth of fresh strawberries and then none after that - is that right?
I use this same technique year round with store bought strawberries.
Do you buy organic strawberries or does this solution get rid of pesticides too? Thanks
I do buy organic strawberries.
Can you fill the jar to the top or should the jar be half empty?
Yes you can fill the jar
I apologize if this question has been asked already… you said you don’t use bleach for your white wash cloths.. may I ask how do you wash them to keep them white ❤
I find bleach makes whites turn yellow over the years. All of our bedding sheets, blankets, bathtowels are white including alot of my kitchen towels. One of the things for the kitchen towels is I don't use them on things that will stain like raspberries or cleaning up pomegranate juice. I use a nontoxic laundry cleaner that I buy online like oxyclean.
Can you use a shallow glass container instead of a mason jar?
Yes
I plan on doing this I am going to store some in the fridge and freeze some of them or buy them frozen lol
There was a recently a huge recall on frozen strawberries for Hep A here in the US. If you buy fresh produce and wash it according to my instructions before freezing you will know your strawberries are safe for your family to eat.
@@TheCrossLegacy omg thanks for letting me know
if you find a bit of mold- can you cut it off then submerge?
I wouldn't if it is already moldy.
Ok im glad i asked i was thinking its remain fresh for longer without stems
I'm glad you asked too! Once you cut off the stems, air can enter the fruit and that will start. them going bad faster. I keep grapes on the stem too for the same reason.
What if I wanna cut off the leaves so they are ready to throw in yogurt? Can I do that or will they go bad quicker?
They will start to deteriorate quicker and will only last a couple of days
Hi im just wondering if i could cut my strawberry and place in airtight container in fridge
Once you cut them they start deterating and will only last a couple of days. It is better to leave them whole
Merry Christmas
Hi i thought to inform u vinegar isnt neccessary i never used an paper towel not necessary too so i never used paper towel an also i only have plastic Tupperware with lid so this is wat i used an my strawberry lasted for 5 weeks im soooo glad i found u atleast i know how to keep strawberry fresh for longer u know before my strawberry lasted for just 2 weeks or under 2 weeks then i stopped buying strawberry but i know now
Vinegar kills off the mold spores, e. coli, listeria and other harmful pathogens
Hello, I have to cover my berries with paper towel while drying because of the occasional fly that sneaks in the house. Does doing that still get the same results?
That would be fine
Thank you so much for sharing, what would be the ratio of water for 1/4 cup of vinegar?
Yes 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar 5%
My bowl holds 10 cups of water to 1/4 cup of vinegar
Love your channel! Couple of questions:
1) Does the temperature in your home matter when drying strawberries?
2) Does the jar size or plastic lid matter for strawberries?
3) What temperature should my refrigerator be?
For context I used pint size jars with metal lids. I washed them for 2 min. and let them dry 3-4 hours until bone dry but they are not staying fresh more than a few days to a week.
Are you getting alot of condensation in such a small jar? You can remove the lid for a few hours in the fridge to get rid of the condensation. Drying time does depend on climate of your area normally for me here in the Seattle area it is around 3-4hours. Our home is normally right around 70' and the inside of our fridge is set to 36'.
@@TheCrossLegacy thank you. Yes we were getting a lot of condensation in the small jar. I assumed that was the problem so we purchased half gallon jars since that was all our local stores had and they seemed to work better but not as long as I hoped. I plan to purchase the gallon jars you recommend on Amazon since my store is out but I was just curious if the plastic lid or size had anything to do with them lasting longer. My carrots and blueberries did fine in the smaller jars.
@@GabrielleGeorge a half gallon size should work perfectly, I use that size often. For berries it doesn't have to be a metal lid, a plastic lid is ok. You are remembering to set a timer when soaking the berries and only soak for 2 mins, right.
Refrigerators should be 40 degrees and freezers at 0 deg.
Can plastic containers be used to store the strawberries?
They won't last as long in plastic
An im not sure if its true but i did hear fruit should b only washed once u ready to use them so thats what i do i wash as needed other than that im looking for storing banana do you know how
I always wash them before storing them and they last 3-6 weeks depending on the fruit.
I always put mine in canning jars, with a paper towel, but never used the vinegar. My berries will last 2-3 weeks. Going to try it with the vinegar and see if they last longer. Thanks...
I think you will find that the vinegar makes a big difference!
@@TheCrossLegacy
I just took 4 quarts of strawberries out of the vinegar water and the outer texture has completely changed. The strawberries feel slimy. What happened. Have lost all 4 quarts? Need help. 🆘
@@judymccleary7426 let's work through this..... did you set a timer while soaking?
@@TheCrossLegacy
Yes. Thank you for responding.
@@judymccleary7426 did you cut them?
Hi its me again , im sooooooo sorry if im troubling u , i did heed your advice, i used airtight containers for strawberry an also tamatoes an also grapes so now im trying to figure out wether its same principles with onion an potatoes, shall i put in airtight Tupperware an put into the fridge , i wont b able to use glass Tupperware an no glass jars because I only got airtight plastic Tupperwares

This may be a silly question, but does it HAVE to be stored in a glass container? Can the container be plastic?🙏🙏🙏🙏
They last the longest in glass but by washing them this way you are killing off the mold spores so they will last longer no matter what container you use
@@TheCrossLegacy Thank you so much!! I really appreciate you letting me know. 🙏🙏🙏🙏 👍
Can this be done with any produce ?
We have a book series called I Bought It, Now What? That list out the tips for all different types of produce items www.thecrosslegacy.com/book
Ok learned something from u
So happy to hear it!
Can I remove the stems then soak berries in vinegar and water?
Not unless you plan on eating them that day. For them to last keep the stems on.
Thanx sweetie
I followed your directions EXACTLY. Is it normal for condensation to form on the edges of the glass jar? I let the strawberries dry for 4-5 hours. I put some paper towels in the bottom of the glass jar and then added the strawberries. Condensation started to form on the sides of the glass jar within a few hours after putting them in the fridge. I know the paper towels will absorb some of this but I'm afraid the excess moisture is going to be a problem.
You can take the lid off for a while in the fridge.
This helped a little bit. Condensation would still form once I put lid back on but I don't think it's a major problem. I added additional paper towels to cover more of the sides of the jar and will periodically wipe away excess condensation that I can reach w/o emptying the jar. This definitely seems to be helping our strawberries/grapes to last longer. One thing I've noticed is that the strawberries and grapes are staying firmer and not getting soft/mushy on us. The fruit looks just as fabulous as it did the day I bought it. It's definitely worth the little extra effort to get our fruit to last a little longer. Thanks for the tips/videos!
I just went back and watched the video again.....and towards the end you actually mention the condensation.....how did I NOT SEE THIS the first time??????? My bad!
Does it take off pesticides (spray before harvest)? I use baking soda to take off pesticides…
Yes and also kill off mold spores, e. Coli, listeria and other harmful pathogens that baking soda does not remove.
So basically the strawberries last because they’re sealed properly in a jar? They just have to be dry before being put in there right?
By washing them with this technique, you are killing of the mold spores and other harmful pathogens. Right now in the news strawberries are being recalled because of Hepatitis A. Putting them in the jar after washing/drying will extend the life of the strawberries.
Great tip. I stopped buying berries because I would end up throwing them out after a few days because of mold. I will try this. I wonder if using a little lemon juice when storing would also help preserve them?
I have never added lemon juice and Strawberries will last 3 weeks, blueberries 6-8wks
Why is it so difficult to just use her tried and true method???🙄
How much water do you use with the 1/4 cup of vinegar?
10 cups of water
Thank you!!
great info..will save us from wasting berries..thanks
Are plastic containers okay?
They will last longer in glass
Do you happen to have a storage cheat sheet for storing these produce? like if i buy a regular strawberry pack at walmart how big of a jar would i need?
All of the details listed out in our book I Bought It, Now What? Available on www.thecrosslegacy.com
A Costco size pack goes into a gallon size jar
@@TheCrossLegacy oh okay, bought the book on Amazon Kindle yesterday but didn't think to check there Thanks!
The last page has a handy chart
Is that as far as you fill one jar or can you add another paper towel and another layer?
You can fill the jar all of the way to the top, you only need a paper towel on the bottom.
Is paper towel dry okay?
Yes a dry paper towel
I've been doing this for awhile..but I still have moldy fruit within a week 😔
Are you following the instructions? If you follow them it will kill off the mold spores.
Shall I wash first and then store my peppers
yes, wash them in a vinegar rinse and then store them whole in the fridge. I also have an ebook you can download and print with written directions of over 75 produce items if you want it all in one place: thecrosslegacyshop.com/products/i-bought-it-now-what-full-collection-ebook-bundle-download

How do I store banana
thecrosslegacy.com/bananas/
I tried this today and the berries got soggy after :/ I waited about 2-3 hours later and they were mushy and dark red. Never fully dried. Hopefully I figure out what went wrong. Im trying to keep fresh picked Oregon berries. Had the AC going which I thought would help.
Did you set a timer when you were soaking them?
Why can't you dry them individual rather than letting them sit for 3 hours ?
This is the way that I have found have worked the best
@TheCrossLegacy OKAY thank you, I will do as you stated
How much water for a quarter cup of vinegar? :)
10 cups
I stopped eatin banana an stopped buying it just doesn't last
Buying organic bananas will allow them to last much longer. Store them on a banana hook and away from any other produce.
Does that remove pesticides?
I have a hard time telling anyone or believing that anything removes pesticides completely because they get into the plant, the water it is grown in and grow with the item. Yes it will help remove surface pesticides but not pesticides inside the produce item, no wash will remove what is grown in the plant.
@@TheCrossLegacy Thank you!
Took you so long
Yea this video could have been cut in half.
Hi. I tried this and it did not work. Less than 7 days and some of the strawberries had some mold.
Hi. I am happy to help, make sure that you are following the instructions that I teach. 5% distilled white vinegar will kill off mold spores when you use 1/4 cup to 10 cups of water. Only soak for 2 mins and set a timer. Make sure they are bone dry when you put them in a a jar with a paper towel. Did you follow these steps when you tried it?
@@TheCrossLegacy I did all the steps only I put them in a long rectangle plastic bin with a lid so they only had 2 rows of strawberries stacked.
They will last longer in glass over plastic.
@@sarasayshi Why even try at all, if you are not capable of following Amy’s “ tried & true”
directions? 🙄 DUH❗️
@hummingbird275 maybe some people don't really have the money to go out and buy everything necessary to follow the method 100% but they still want to try and make produce last longer so they use what they have. Lets not be judgemental.
What about organic strawberries
Most of the produce I buy is organic and I wash it. Produce comes from farms and multiple people handle it no matter if it is organic or not. Plus this method kills off mold spores.
@@TheCrossLegacy thank you for your reply
I have the hardest time hearing you.. your microphone isn’t very loud.. but thx you for info…
We are constantly working on upgrading equipment and editing skills as funds allow. Since this video was uploaded we have a new camera. Here are the written instructions www.thecrosslegacy.com/strawberries-in-a-jar
Your sound was too low
Also, the person whose strawberries came out slimy- sounds like too much vinegar/not enough water.
Yes measurements are important it's 10 cups of water to 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar
Omg- are people panicked about using paper towels. Cry me a river.
What about canning jars, they seal strawberries are very acid tasting. We just throw away. I see your jar is not a canning jar.
I use canning jars often in my fridge for produce. Right now I have some in a half gallon and also quart size jar in the fridge, both Ball brand with the metal canning lid.
Do you seal the ring tightly on the jar? Yesterday I placed the lid loosely to not get a tight seal as in canning. As I said before, when I tightened the lid , they all popped after opening. I know this is a no no. Thanks love your program.
@Merry Jo Stafford for berries the lids don't need to be tightly sealed. I normally have plastic lids on my gallon size jars which do allow for a little airflow.
You are so goofy😅
Huh?
