Tim, You say you get why people who like RUSH a lot say Alex is underrated. You picked a honest word that he is under appreciated ... much better selection of words. People who love Alex and think he and RUSH are “Over The Top” don’t let people slide with that false narrative! People who like RUSH say a lot of their songs are underrated ... we that love RUSH don’t let that slide! Summary: Let’s tell the world on a global scale and give Mr. Lifeson 🎸his proper and total respect as well as RUSH The Band!!! The term underrated and under appreciated have no place here Period
A quote I read long ago about Alex: "Some guitarists make you say, 'I wish I had done that.' Alex Lifeson makes you say, 'I wish I had thought of that.' "
"Unpredictable, but doesn't chop up the flow of the song." Absolutely spot on! Music like this keeps the brain engaged and guessing, so you get sucked in even after playing it 100 times.
During the Presentation chapter Geddy sings the words “do and you” in completely different ways/ qualities/ melodies…. Giving me the impression that variety is import, and Geddy conveys this with a simple word like “do” . Freaking amazing. The brain engaged for sure !
Truer words my friend, truer words.....have never been spoken. This masterpiece demands that you pass it on to the next generation. This is true musicianship at it's finest.
Absolutely, I am 61, heard this album hundreds of times, and it still gives me the chills. Perhaps deeper than Beethoven or Mozart? RUSH has some deep stuff going on. And how old were they at that moment in time? Crazy!
I was 13 sat in my mates garage , he said do you want to buy this for £ in 1979 , I took it home. I was a Drummer at school , but this made me a RUSH fan for Life. The greatest band ever.
Neil mentioned in a drum forum with Chad Smith That Alex would present Neil with drum parts he was thinking of Neil, really admired the original ideas of Alex, The last show they did in L A , Chad smith was there , Stuart Copeland , Taylor Hawkins , And Jethro Tulls drummer
I have my uncle Eddie to thank for my love of lots of bands including Rush, I was 11 years old in 1976 when 2112 came out, my uncle told me, 'you have to listen to this album', he had an awesome stereo system, so there I am sat on his sofa, two huge speakers pointed right at me, I'm looking at the lyrics on the record sleeve, BOOM! I was sold, I have been a huge Rush fan ever since. From around the age of 10 My uncle Eddie got me into Queen, Rush, Pink Floyd and loads of other great bands, Eddie RIP I miss you man
The young man finally gets it! Welcome to the world of Rush and now you will never hear music the same way. Love your reaction, much like my own so many years ago... ✌️☝️☝️✌️
I believe that there is one thing about Rush that’s worth keeping in mind and that is the attitude of its members. It was a happy piece of synchronicity that these three men were united because they were all focused, not on writing hit singles (which were fine if they came along), but on growing as players and as songwriters. They were all perfectionists. It’s like an Olympic runner: no matter if they won or not, they would want to run every race faster than they had the previous one. So no matter how well the “2112” album turned out, the goal was to make an even better one the next time. Their attitude also explains why Neil, already ranked as one of the best rock drummers, went and studied under masters of other styles (Gruber and Erskine, if I spelled those names correctly). The best always want to be better and THAT is why they ARE the best. Pride and humility blended. That’s why there was no Rush formula, only a desire to get better at the game, which is why their true fans (like Bowie’s) stuck with them through all of their changes. (Pardon me for running on, please.) (Btw, I loved your reactionalysis. Emotionally honest and technically informative. Thank you! 😎🇨🇦)
Alex created unmatched melody structure to Rush's music. His arpeggiated notes is always mesmerizing. Yes, probably he is the most underrated guitarist ever.
This doesn't just change your world, This Changed The World. Rush throws it down , loud and clear. Led what? Pink who? There's a new dog in town, move over.
Led what? Pink who? Lol, let’s tap the breaks there. Proclaiming the greatness of Rush doesn’t diminish the greatness of those other bands. Like Rush, Zep and Floyd have earned the right to be lauded as elite in the conversation of great bands. But I get it, everyone has their preference. Love them all, but Rush was the inspiration for me to learn how to play guitar, drums, keys, and eventually production. Legends.
@@pablozee6359 Absolutely. I wasn't shadeing on anybody, or any other group, I like all those bands too. My point was that with this piece of music Rush was showing they were among that category.
@@scott4482 Alex Lifeson is so humble he Doesn’t see himself among the greats. That’s what makes Rush so awesome is their humility . When Jimmy Page came up he was full of cockiness from day one . Robert Plant and the rest were cool but Page I never liked his playing at all
@@scott4482for sure! If anyone was sleeping on Rush before 2112, it was definitely an emphatic wake up call. I remember having the gatefold LP with their hilariously dated tight white outfits and the liner notes and lyrics. It’s been over 40 years since I first heard 2112, and it still hits hard, or “slaps” as my teenagers say, lol.
So you were blown away and its 2021...imagine hearing this in 1976..77...talk about blown away....its a masterpiece for any decade!!...I enjoyed your reaction...side 2 is also awsome....cant wait..
I think you hit on one of the things that makes Alex and Rush so unique. I hear a lot of non-musicians talk about how incredible and technical the music is and how hard it is to play but honestly any halfway decent guitarist, drummer etc, could play probably 90% of this stuff. I can go on TH-cam and find a dozen 10 year old kids playing Tom Sawyer on drums for example. Thats not it, Rush’s talent lies in being able to write this stuff in the first place. I know I’m going to get a lot of hate for this but when I listen to Dream Theater for example, I hear complicated music simply for the sake of being complicated. it doesn’t flow. With Rush, you just think "I just listened to a great piece of music”, and then you go back later and realize oh they were in the key of C sharp minor in 7/4 time and then two bars later they were in 15/16, playing in E flat. A lot of bands have tried but they just can’t make it work like Rush does. Guitarists that can play a gazillion notes a second are a dime a dozen, as TH-cam has shown us. Guitarists that can write something memorable? That’s another story. And that’s the beauty of Rush, all technically proficient, all great players, but they just write great music.
Dude if you get complainers on this one, it’s because they’re knuckle heads. That has always been my point of view. Anyone can copy a masterpiece, (well not everyone), but you get my drift, it’s making the masterpiece that is the genius. Making something great out of what is available to everyone else, but you do it differently and get the results. I’ve always loved their music for that alone, I could say, but among other things. 😎
Exactly. They expanded the realm of possibilities with their imagination, their talent and their courage. Rush never played it safe. I’ll always respect and love them for that.
For me,, Soliloquy is by far the pinnacle of the piece. The discovery, the temples of syrinx with the priests, the dream he has and communicates with the orical atop the sprial of stairs. All of it piles up in his recognition of his inability to go on knowing what he knows and seeing what he had seen. Geddy's projection of soul and passion in those lyrics. It makes my eyes well up. "Just think of what my life might be in a world that i have seen, i dont think i can carry on, carry on this cold and empty life. My spirits are low in the depths of dispare, my lifes blood spills over... its just so heavy, like i said before, the projected emotion is powerful.
One of the best things, of so many best things, about Rush, is just how much Alex is able to make you FEEL the story that is being told. No other musician can make me FEEL the song like him. There is so much soul in his creation. And you are right, it is genius in its composition, the whole band. Lots of "stuff" that no one else can put together like they did.
imagine a 10 year old kid in England learning to play guitar bass and drums. (all hand me downs begged and borrowed) He comes home with this album , puts it on his record player , listens while he reads the lyrics on the inner record sleeve ...life changing ? you bet ! I'm 53 now and have played an instrument and or sung .. every day since ...... Peace and love brother from "Springy 2112" !!! enough said 👍🏻☮❤
Here’s a little tidbit that none of the reactors have ever noticed: Go back and listen to the lead guitar at the end of the Overture section (right before “And the meek shall inherit the earth”). Sound familiar? It’s the main melody from Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” ... played at the end of the 2112 Overture. Fun little Easter egg :)
Not trying to be arrogant or snobby, but growing up, we all knew, at least the people I knew or hung out with, knew this was Tchaikovsky. I guess growing up as a kid when the Bad News Bears came out probably helpe as well. The kids I hung out with we were all into music. I love that part as you mentioned though, I always imagine fireworks going off. 😎
@@Bass17yl yes sir, I know what you mean. Most people our age remember shop class, which I don’t think is offered at most schools anymore. Small music departments, and unfortunately even if they were larger, many kids nowadays aren’t even interested in learning how to play an instrument, so generations being wasted because of technology.
Thank you! Finally someone said what needed to be said... Others can emulate what Rush has done, but they are NOT the creative genius behind writing their masterpieces! Copying what others have done is amazing, but originally writing Rush's complex twisting tales is something completely different... Hats Off to Rush's musical and lyrical mastery!! Cheers!
Shamefully i have watched about 7 or 8 of these reaction videos of 2112 lol thats alot of time... you are the first person that I have seen that just got it and absorbed it. Awesome spirit man!
I watched an interview with Alex and Geddy from about 5 years ago, and the host asked kind of a shocking question: “who’s the best musician in Rush?” The two took a moment, looking almost confused, until Alex finally said “Geddy” and then Ged waited a beat and said “Neil.” I so wish Neil had been there, because you know he would have said “Alex.” The rest of the band referred to Lerxst as their “musical scientist.” While he and Dirk would lay down jams, he would then dice them up and turn them into the face-melting arrangements that defined the band for 40 years. The reason he doesn’t end up on the top of “best guitarists” list is because the band wasn’t built around him. Satch, Vai, Eddie, SRV, Hendrix... these guys all played in acts that were literally named after them. But the was never a Rush album called “Lifeson.” Even when he did a solo record, he didn’t name it after himself. On some days, I think that’s the worst part about Neil’s death; Alex doesn’t play guitar anymore. When he lost his friend, he lost his inspiration, too. And they were such dear friends - watching them together is such a joy. Alex just puts on a show for Neil the whole time and leaves him near tears because he’s laughing so much. If you think about it, Alex’s entire journey is stunning. He dropped out of high school at 17 to marry his girlfriend and start Rush. You can find footage of him arguing with his parents about doing it. And he ended up selling more records than nearly anyone, only behind the Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
And while Big Al was always a master of composition and expression on a six string, don’t discount his technical skills. As you progress through the Rush catalog, you’re going to hear stuff like La Villa, The Spirit of Radio, Freewill, The Analog Kid, Kid Gloves, Grand Designs, Turn the Page, The Pass, Cut to the Chase, Bravado... the list is endless. And if you listen with your full attention, you’ll hear him make sounds that you’d never thought possible out of a guitar. No other guitarist could ever write Red Barchetta. It would never occur to them. Even if Bach had an electric guitar, he wouldn’t have composed that intro. But the high school dropout from Willowdale, Ontario? Yeah, he just busted that out at 27 years old.
You are just realizing WTF is going on. I was blown away in 77. So blessed to live in that time frame of music, and so blessed to be turned on to Rush. Saw them the first time in 77. After some BS Kiss music, Rush proceeded to rollout the shag carpet, and "lay down some fucking rules." Not sure they realized it at the time. They kicked the shit out of any performance I had ever heard before then, and to date. All the stars lined up for these guys. Hard work, no compromise, a WTF attitude, big balls, and pure talent made them the greatest band of all time. If you don't realize that, I'm sorry. RIP Neil...
54 year old guitarist here. I've been blessed to have this music grace my ears for 40+ years. Out of this world is the perfect & only way to describe these bands. Zep, Rush, Floyd. 1a, 1b, 1c for me. They may exist on another plane or dimension somewhere, but they'll never exist here again. Truly one offs. New sub 🤘
Discussed "music" with a teenage stepdaughter and asked what she felt with her 3 minute electronic songs. Was very patient and asked for 20 minutes of her life ...slipped headphones on and played 2112....an hour later she couldn't figure out if she wanted to play drums, bass or guitar ...but like all she was mimicking them. She fell asleep to Xanadu....yeah,figure that one out. But I got a kiss and thank you the next day.
Phenomenal album. Enjoy the journey! I remember seeing RUSH with original drummer John Rutsey in clubs back in the early 70s sitting 10 feet from the stage..They blew me away! I remember thinking at the time... who the hell are these guys!? These guys are incredible and deserve to get somewhere! What a joy it was to watch their rise to fame and follow their journey over the years from clubs to stadiums and worldwide success. Sooo Well deserved and phenomenal! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🎼🎶🎵
As a fan of nearly 40 years, my heart soars when I see someone at the moment they really GET Rush. This is the album that does it. Though we all have been fans, we truly never knew what we had. Even now, I feel like you - blown away, life changed, speechless - every time I really listen to any to their music. I am enthralled by your discovery and am with you each step of the way. I welcome dialogue, if you so wish, to revel in the magic that is (present tense) Rush.
My gateway drug into the world of Rush!! Try to imagine yourself as a teenager in 1976 and listening to this when it first came out. There was nothing like it then, and certainly nothing like it now!! They established themselves as the Progressive Metal Kings, no doubt about it...
The baddest 3 friends who happen to own the prog rock world. RIP GOAT…” You Don’t Get Something For Nothing, You Don’t Get Freedom For Free, You Won’t Get Wise With The Sleep Still In Your Eyes No Matter What Your Dreams Might Be” sounds about right!
I find myself nodding my head in agreement with you while watching these, lol. Its going to get better and better, and I cant wait. Just when you think you have Rush figured out, they change and head toward a different direction. Musicianship is one thing, but this is art in the highest form. The music and lyrics together convey so much emotion. Rush is one of the (very) few bands that can get me choked up from the beauty of their art.
Awesome Reaction. I watch many of these Rush reactions over the years most Reactions Hear and See Rush through Neil maybe some Geddy, but what sets your reactions apart is your feeling it, seeing it through Alex and its quite refreshing.. Well Done my friend..
Dude - thanks for your comments thank you for appreciating Rush thanks for appreciating Alex and Neil and getting in the way that many of us have for 40 years dude thanks for putting it in ways that we probably couldn’t!
Not the least reason I love 2112 is because it's such a huge F U to the record company & the band's critics. They were bound & determined to do things their way & they did. My life was complete when I saw them play 2112 in its entirety June 30, 1997 at Molson Amphitheater, Toronto.
That's the key point, the creativity is astounding, I don't think a lot of people realize just how hard it is to come up with a good original riff and Alex has dozens of great original riffs. That is a very very rare gift.
During the first three albums they were in survival mode. You toured, wrote new material and starved. It wasn’t every band that started with a bang like the Beatles or Led Zepplin , back then the record company basically owned you, and the goal was to own the record company and they did that with this album. I think more and more true Rush fans will find your channel and I super appreciate your honesty and humility, don’t worry about your naysayers , they are just jealous. You have the most honest analysis/reaction channel on the net
What can this strange device be? When Alex touches it, we all experience its beauty. This song changed my life too...along with Hemispheres, of course.
2112 is a classic. It's something that will be played for as long as people listen to music. I only wish I could be here when it's 2112 to hear it being celebrated.
It’s almost impossible to fathom that this is only 3 guys!!! They were even better live. I wish you could’ve had the opportunity to see them live even more intense and amazing!!! Talented is being modest, legendary and once in a lifetime!!!! Enjoy the rabbit 🐰 hole!!!!!
I was introduced to Rush in 1983. 32 shows later. A little smart only due to the fact I picked my favorite band at such an young age. Neil’s lyrics opened my mind. Geddy and Alex were just masterful and how I knew that at a young age? I don’t know. I’m 54 now and I’m so happy to see Rush get the props we Rush fans knew they deserved ❤️
The story is basically a musical adaptation of Ayn Rand's short novel 'Anthem' but with an ambiguous ending. What makes it brilliant and often goes unnoticed is reoccurring chord patterns with different stresses and accents on these chords to make them unique but also cohesive. Geddy and Alex seemed to be very aware of the fact that they were bringing back musical themes and flipping them around on themselves from section to section.
I first listened to this album in 1983, freshman year in high school when my new best friend started playing music that he liked. He put this vinyl on, and I was knocked flat on my back. I remember just staring at his stereo just thinking "what in the hell is this?" I was in awe throughout the first side. Then he flips record over and these four songs, all different, all taking you on a different musical journey but not too intense, almost if they knew they had to bring you down slowly after the mind-altering intensity of the first side. This album is perfection front to back, and all the critics can go hang.
I first heard Rush in 1981. I was wowed by ‘Moving Pictures’ and a buddy suggested ‘2112’. (A buddy that played guitar, BTW. Thanks Eric!) I wore out the first copy I bought on vinyl in about two months and had to buy another. I’m glad we have digital now.
2112 was the album that made Rush. Following its success, Rush was able to do whatever they wanted! I was a Junior in high school when 2112 was released.
Defining 'technicality' is subjective! In my mind, this is what makes Alex truly one of the finest players in the world, bar none! His use of the instrument, creative sounds, creative melodies and solos, time changes, strumming patterns - there's just no one as diverse on the instrument! When you mention the greats - Clapton, Hendrix, Page, and even some of the more current guitar geniouses - and what kind of variety they perform, they just don't measure up to what Lifeson does. Not that they can't, necessarily, but they don't! I like what you said about even making the tuning of the guitar sound good! Genious!!
The first time I heard this was the first time I heard RUSH. It was 1976, I was 13 years old and a friend gave me the album because he liked YES and was told he would like RUSH but was not into it. I was alone in my living room with headphones hooked to a record player. At the end of the side, I had the exact thoughts that you did. LIFE CHANGING! I had no idea music could be THIS!
Imagine hearing this at 13 or so... That was a long time ago. I'm still enjoying all their music these years later. Missing Neil. Missing them playing new music.
Glad to have you back in 2021 Tim. Thank you for your intelligent, in depth review/reaction to the Rush catalogue. As you noted from Caress of Steel, you can hear the progression of the band since the joining of Neil Peart. It's like listening to a custom builder tinker and assemble a one-of-a-kind machine, it takes a bit of tweaking and short test runs to achieve the end result of pure exhilaration. 2112 is the beginning of that awesome machine being released upon the world fully operational. From 1976 to 2012, these three incredible people can improve your life through their music if you let them. I've had discussions with friends over the years about "greatest lists" or Mt. Rushmore lists of rock bands. I am convinced Rush deserves Mt. Everest all to themselves, and for the reasons you've come to realize. These guys created 20 studio albums (17 with Neil) that are equal to the greatest song writing and performing of any musical genre. The "holy trinity" should be as revered as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, etc. You get the idea, they are simply some of the greatest examples to date of human achievement in music. You rightly hone in on Alex's writing and playing as a guitarist yourself, however Geddy is possibly the most talented of the three. Check out his solo album "My Favorite Headache" and you realize how much of Rush's sound is because of him. Having watched him live many times, the man sings one melody, plays a different one on bass (usually very difficult bass lines), and plays sample parts using foot pedals...all at the same time! The guy is superhuman. Combined with Neil and Alex, these three are gods.
It's a masterpiece, a confluence of 3 fabulous musicians who's hearts and skills united to do their best to express their passion in the face of massive opposition. And in deciding to do this their creative powers were freed and they reached heights previously unknown. Few artists ever achieve this level of creative freedom and those that do often waste it in self indulgence which makes 2112 even more remarkable. Welcome to Rushville there's lots more to see and hear and all of it has something good about.. Yes even power windows!
The first time I heard this was when camping out with my cousin from Milwaukee. It was at night, under the stars in a meadow up in the woods of Eastern WA. He brought a boom box 8 track player with 2112 and also Dark Side Of The Moon, which I also heard for the first time. Both albums were not very old at that time. It was the summer before 8th grade, and Rush became my favorite band right then.
Tim.. now you know why I’ve been hounding you since the beginning about doing this song!! Thank you so much for this reaction!! It took me back to the 1st time I heard this song!! Throughout their 40 year career together, they always stayed to true to their music! It was always about the music for them! Excellent reaction! The rest of the album is great too!! Can’t wait!! (Now, I hope I don’t get in trouble at work, cause I couldn’t wait till the end of the day to watch you listen to this!! I just turned down my Zoom meeting and turned you up!! LOL!!) Be well and God Bless... from Texas!!
Making me the priority at work is serious dedication and I appreciate your continued feedback on the channel! And I've been looking forward to this song for quite a while but knew it had to be done at the right time. Seriously amazing!!
Now you know what I meant by “2112 is a whole different level”. There is even better to come as you progress through their catalog. Now that you have experienced 2112, we can officially say “Welcome to the club man. It’s gonna be a blast” Regarding Alex, there is a quote attributed to Eddie Van Halen when asked the question “How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world”. He replied “I don’t know, you should go and ask Alex Lifeson”. Don’t know if it’s true.
Eddie Van Halen never said this. The quote has been around since at least the late 60s and has been used for and about other guitarists. The first time I heard it, it was supposedly Eric Clapton being asked and he responded I don’t know, go ask Prince. It’s a nice anecdote but it’s not true.
It’s certainly possible he never said it. I’ve not been able to find the article in question and given everything we know about Eddie, it does seem unlikely he said it, but you never know... I’ve edited my post accordingly.
@@aicarnie no worries. It's a trope of a saying, a cliche, now, with different variations. Charlie Chaplin supposedly saying that about Cantefloss was the first example I personally heard it used, and saw it repeated in variations from there...
Incredible. Loved listening and watching your reaction. I listened to this (loud with headphones) when it was released on CHUM FM 104.5 back when they played full new albums at midnight. Glad you get it - what a creation - masterpiece. 🔥😎👍
That defines Rush... massive sound, so much going on, NEVER gets muddy or confusing. It's just full. Another thing they are famous for is the ability to modify riffs so that the same riff doesn't get old. And they'll use call and response frequently. They know all the tricks and they are good. This song was a gigantic middle finger to the label... and the label flinched and admitted this was genius.
Your reaction seems very similar to mine when I first heard this in 1976 with two friends who called me and said I have to listen to this album...there were few, relatively speaking, who understood the implications of this album to their future career, and fewer who cared at all about the band at that time (compared to popular music or even other bands at the time)...but RUSH proved over and over that they were not a 'fly by night' phenomenom and worked their butts off touring and creating to win the respect and success they achieved until they retired. 2112 is my favourite RUSH song and had impacts on me that no other music or band has had since. Thank you for your reaction and helping me relive mine.
This album is how I became a rush fanatic. My best friend in high school got the 2112 album when it first came out and we sat in his bedroom and played this until his mom kicked us out of the house! At that time, they were pretty much a cult type band, not much radio play at all. I guess they remained that way unit the release of Moving Pictures and their hit Tom Sawyer. By that time I was fully entrenched in the band and caught them in San Diego, CA for the Moving Pictures tour shortly after joining the navy.
What will truly blow your mind... Every time you listen to 2112 you will hear something different. Some little thing that makes you think OMG. Though the years, I still hear things that I never noticed before. A fun thing to do is focus on a certain thing, you being a guitarist, will focus on Alex's playing, tone, solos, etc. But if you focus on Ged's bass, you'll hear something else. You focus on Neil's playing, you'll hear something. Try to focus on just Alex's rhythm guitar licks... Almost all the way through 2112 there are over-dubs of acoustic or clean electric guitars. The wonderous adventure still goes on after all these years of experiencing Rush. Welcome to the true RUSH ride...
Love seeing someone experience this epic piece.... I would not know my life without it. Very few things have ever touched my soul as this 3 row center stage . Never too loud. Omg Geddy's voice was at his prime here... They are all masters in their own right.... 47 yrs of knowing them they just feed each other. They had so much fun..... I mean come on....🎶🎶 I know its so unusual to come before you so. I found an ancient miracle I thought that you should know. Listen to my music see what it can do. There's something here as strong as life I know it will reach you.🎶🎸 Cheers
Awesome to see you blown away by the this great band! Rush is great once they hook you in, it’s a awesome ride! Love the channel!! Keep up the great reviews, you are now a Rush brother
In regards to Alex playing on this, this is surely one of his finest works. He definitely plays more amazing stuff later on too... but 2112 is like the ultimate tribute to the artist. The emotions of the character through his journey are so well reflected by Alex playing. 2112 VI:Soliloquy is probably my second favorite alex lifeson solo, after la villa strangiatto.
RE: Soliloquy solo, that combination bend/pinch, maybe a slightly open wah, that sounds like a horse is simply one of the rudest guitar sounds I've ever heard. Part of me wishes there existed and entire piece of music using that, but then I realize that what makes is special, and why I listen to the song over and over is that it is but a moment, in long string of other moments that each caress your ear and then are gone... like a vapor trail. Thanks, again, Neil, for more than you could ever know.
So....glad you are digging this band. Been a fan since 1981. Great band, that only in the past 10 years started to get any credit. Maybe the best ever.
Alex is a really soulful player and experimental too - love him. This was the first time I've listened to 2112 for an age and it was a moving experience. Possibly the heaviest of all the Rush albums. Will be interested to see what you make of Hemispheres when you get to that.
This song and And You and I by Yes changed my musical tastes forever. So cool to see other people having a similar experience so many years later. “Flip it over” and listen to Twilight Zone. A hidden gem. Keep rockin’.
What just happened to you, happened to me at 11 years old in 1978 and I had never heard of Rush before. My friend Jeff handed me this cassette to listen to and life would never be the same.
Hi, Tim! Your reaction series is really cool! It was back in 1978, when I was 16, when I bought Rush’s Archives three album set that made me a Rush-head! Once I got 2112 and played it over end over again memorizing the lyrics, my love and appreciation of Rush soared! Looking back all these years and listening to you trip out over them gets me smiling and singing along with Geddy! The song’s storyline exemplifies Rush and their everlasting contribution to rock music...congrats to them being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, blah, blah, blah! :)
Very touching. Really took me back to second time I heard this at age 19 (early 90's) -- first time was at friend's apartment (Thanks Tom) but second time was a few days later, alone and with headphones.
I was lucky enough to hear this live during their Test For Echo tour right after I graduated high school. It was as close to a religious experience that I have ever experienced.
What an intense 20 minutes this was! This is out of this world!!! Thank you all so much for joining me for this.

I think you should get your dad to come to the studio and make a video of him reacting to you reacting to Rush.
@@daviddelollis245 That would be very cool! 😍🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
A quote I read long ago about Alex:
"Some guitarists make you say, 'I wish I had done that.' Alex Lifeson makes you say, 'I wish I had thought of that.' "
"Unpredictable, but doesn't chop up the flow of the song." Absolutely spot on!
2112 - a true masterpiece of music that will live on like the music of Beethoven on Mozart!
you speak facts my friend
Truer words my friend, truer words.....have never been spoken. This masterpiece demands that you pass it on to the next generation. This is true musicianship at it's finest.
Absolutely, I am 61, heard this album hundreds of times, and it still gives me the chills.
Perhaps deeper than Beethoven or Mozart?
RUSH has some deep stuff going on.
And how old were they at that moment in time?
Crazy!
“Only Alex Lifeson could make tuning a guitar sound so good.” LMFAO Indeed, sir.
Uuuusing that
MORE IS MORE !!!!!
Alex Lifeson the most underrated guitar player in the history of music
It's hard to get noticed when your band mates are also incredible.
Gotta admit he is pretty good at 23 when he did this gem! 💎 As well as the others except Neil who was a year older. 🥁🎸🎤👍
You can Throw Buck Dharma in they’re also. BOC
Yes indeed....spot on.
Great reaction!
(Pardon me for running on, please.)
(Btw, I loved your reactionalysis. Emotionally honest and technically informative. Thank you! 😎🇨🇦)
Alex created unmatched melody structure to Rush's music. His arpeggiated notes is always mesmerizing. Yes, probably he is the most underrated guitarist ever.
Listened to this thousands of times since day one. Still get goosebumps every single time . Timeless
This doesn't just change your world, This Changed The World.
Rush throws it down , loud and clear.
Led what? Pink who?
There's a new dog in town, move over.
Amen
Led what?
THAT'S WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT (13 YEARS OLD)....HAD TO WHAT UNTIL I WAS 16 TO GO SEE THEM LIVE , WHICH WAS THE HEMISPHERES TOUR !!!!!
@@fasteddie777666 thats cool...I was 11....6...years later my dad dropped me and 2 buddies off to see them live...for the first time...so awsome
As talented as they are, the emulators rarely get it just right. That is the magic of Rush - often emulated, never duplicated.
No hate bro, you are spot on.
Nailed it.
Interviewer to Eddie van hallen : hows it feel to be the best quitar player?
Eddie : i don't know, ask leifson.
This was their middle finger to the studio...and they hit a home run with it!
“Is it normal to think you’ve just had a life changing experience when you hear that”
Why yes. Yes it is
Warms my heart that you enjoyed this so much.
My cool stoner uncle played this record to me in 1978. That was the day Kiss ceased to exist. Kia kaha \m/
imagine a 10 year old kid in England learning to play guitar bass and drums.
Was just telling my 19 year old son about this today!
@@GT-mq1dx Yeah, unfortunately music education isn’t what it used to be. Much more important that we teach kids how to manipulate a ball of some kind!
Cheers!
One of the best reactions i have seen yet.
Gary A agreed.
And you're only 3-1/2 albums in, it keeps getting better! I wish that I could live it all again...
Neil said the same thing in "Headlong flight"😊
For me, 1976-1986 is peak Rush. Still awesome stuff before and after, but this is where they are hitting on all cylinders, including Geddy's voice.
Shamefully i have watched about 7 or 8 of these reaction videos of 2112 lol thats alot of time... you are the first person that I have seen that just got it and absorbed it. Awesome spirit man!
I watched an interview with Alex and Geddy from about 5 years ago, and the host asked kind of a shocking question: “who’s the best musician in Rush?” The two took a moment, looking almost confused, until Alex finally said “Geddy” and then Ged waited a beat and said “Neil.” I so wish Neil had been there, because you know he would have said “Alex.”
The rest of the band referred to Lerxst as their “musical scientist.” While he and Dirk would lay down jams, he would then dice them up and turn them into the face-melting arrangements that defined the band for 40 years.
Alex married in 1975. His eldest son was born in 1970.
I remember watching them at the kitchen table and Alex is pleading his case, cigarette being burned at the table. Dad looks unimpressed
RIP Neil...
This was the first Rush album I ever heard,1979, and had the same reaction,. Now on to the fun side😉
Tim: I haven’t heard anything like this before ... at the 8:05 mark.
Said ... 45 years later🤣😂🤣
Imagine you hear it in the 70s
enjoy for the rest of your life. have bin since 1976 still a treat to hear thanks again
There is no better Rush reaction channel than this one. It takes a musician to understand musicians.
To think they wrote this when they were 23 years old.
For fucking real...
Canadians are just something else.
Neil Peart was 23 but Alex and Geddy were 22.
Awesome reaction....After 2112, Rush had total autonomy on the song they wanted to write. Enjoying this journey...thx.
This is my favorite piece of music from Alex. The way he communicates emotion with his guitar playing throughout the story is astounding.
I've been listening Rush since I was 11 (1975) and ever willing hear everything day by day....
Awesome Reaction. I watch many of these Rush reactions over the years most Reactions Hear and See Rush through Neil maybe some Geddy, but what sets your reactions apart is your feeling it, seeing it through Alex and its quite refreshing.. Well Done my friend..
I consider myself lucky to have seen Rush live as a teen in the 80’s, a few times in the 90’s and again in the 2000’s.
Dude - thanks for your comments thank you for appreciating Rush thanks for appreciating Alex and Neil and getting in the way that many of us have for 40 years dude thanks for putting it in ways that we probably couldn’t!
I "got it" back in 1976 and I still get goosebumps to this day when I hear it!
Keep in mind these guys were only 23-24 years old when they wrote and recorded this album, just amaze balls.
With great bands, the sum is always greater than the parts. And when individual parts are so exceptional, the resultant sum must be that much greater.
What can this strange device be? When Alex touches it, we all experience its beauty. This song changed my life too...along with Hemispheres, of course.
I was where you’re at now back in 1988... I could believe what I was hearing! Over 30 years later, still gives me chills listening to this.
RUSH: Best creation in the universe since the Bing Bang!
Got it when I was 12 in 1976 , still listen to it at least once a week , love watching new fans see it for who they are.
Thanks Eric!)
I wore out the first copy I bought on vinyl in about two months and had to buy another.
Genious!!
My friends and I used to just crank this. We called RUSH, High Energy Rock and Roll. But 2112 was soooo good. Man, 40 years ago now.
It’s gonna be a blast”
Regarding Alex, there is a quote attributed to Eddie Van Halen when asked the question “How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world”.
@@jhc2093 "Akshually"...lol.
Honestly, though, that anecdote has been overplayed in recent years, imo.
You're just going to explode when you do Hemispheres 😂😂
I've listened to Hemispheres at least 10,000 times..........and I explode every time.
Mmm, lots of angst in that record
Excellent reaction 👍👍. It's gratifying seeing young folks discovering the greatest rock and roll band that ever was !!
Welcome to the true RUSH ride...
everytime wen i hear the solo in Soliloquy
I feel flying in space into the deep universe
Love seeing someone experience this epic piece.... I would not know my life without it.
Very few things have ever touched my soul as this 3 row center stage . Never too loud.
Omg Geddy's voice was at his prime here...
They are all masters in their own right....
47 yrs of knowing them they just feed each other. They had so much fun..... I mean come on....🎶🎶
I know its so unusual to come before you so. I found an ancient miracle I thought that you should know.
Listen to my music see what it can do. There's something here as strong as life I know it will reach you.🎶🎸
Cheers
2112 is an album that yields something new every time you listen to it. Yes, life changing is the phrase for this thing of beauty.
Love that you are enjoying this! Always caught at least one Rush show on every tour since Signals in ‘82. My favorite band of all time. Welcome!
Alex can squeeze more emotion out of a single note than most players, always been my favorite and the reason I picked up a guitar at 14
In the context of a track this is for sure his best ever solo for me. One of those ones that has the spine tingling moments every time I hear it.
Amen
So....glad you are digging this band. Been a fan since 1981. Great band, that only in the past 10 years started to get any credit. Maybe the best ever.
Alex is a really soulful player and experimental too - love him. This was the first time I've listened to 2112 for an age and it was a moving experience. Possibly the heaviest of all the Rush albums. Will be interested to see what you make of Hemispheres when you get to that.
I've been a Rush fan since I was about 10 years old in 1980, amazing music
You’ve put into words how I’ve always felt about 2112. Thanks for this good thoughtful review!
Very touching. Really took me back to second time I heard this at age 19 (early 90's) -- first time was at friend's apartment (Thanks Tom) but second time was a few days later, alone and with headphones.
I always thought the albums before and after 2112 was for the music industry and radio but 2112 showcased each one of them's talent
I was lucky enough to hear this live during their Test For Echo tour right after I graduated high school. It was as close to a religious experience that I have ever experienced.
