    This song and this album is an absolute masterpiece. And that is saying a lot when one considers the greatness of these guys. The brooding introduction, underscored by Alex’s guitar work sets the tone for a song with a serious message. Again, one of Rush’s finest songs. Alex never ceases to amaze by his uniquely unpredictable string work and solo. Superb!

    Well here we are at the end of side 2 😢. Tim with Power windows 🪟 coming and you being a proficient guitarist, can you listen to Alex on Big Money? I knew a very adept player as a teen we were 20 as it hit and he could play most everything by ear, but he couldn't seem get Alex in Big Money he swore that Alex could spread across the neck beyond his reach and couldn't hit the notes or chords he actually said he couldn't figure out how Alex did it 😮🎸🤯.

    • @joemanning8416
      @joemanning8416 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Big Money is in a different tuning - F# standard. I just use a capo on the 2nd fret, but he had guitars setup for that tight of a tuning.

      @@joemanning8416 Thanks, I know nothing to what you explained, as me being a wannabe drummer 😂. I do own the beautiful B.C. Rich Mockingbird in my picture... I just haven't the nerve quite yet to p/up n learn. But as a child of the 70's, Alex n Ace have been my fav's with Alex clearly the best ever. I know Geddy n Neil are the foundation and of course the lyrics 🤯, but I hear more of the message coming through Alex's expressive playing, with each note his soul screams out 🎸💯🤘

    Chorus intro...Also, one of my favorite progressions EVER brotha...hits me in the feels every damn time. It's rock, emotion, minor key and major mixed...Geddy killing it on synths and vox, beautiful guitar (i play this shit often as a warmup)...man, I love the chorus passage super mucho. Plus the dark lyrics....amazing...you can go from boom to bust, from dreams to a bowl of dust. Metaphorically poignant stuff that could be used for plenty of 'world issues.' Happy to watch you react dude. I think you said your Pops turned you onto them? I'm trying to do the same with my kiddos. Peace and love

    I remember getting Grace Under Pressure the day it was released. Fans were still adjusting to the new 80s Rush, and Signals had felt like a step down from Moving Pictures, though in hindsight it isn't. And everyone seemed to agree GUP was a step down from Signals, which I guess it is, but mainly it's a different tone, darker in mood despite all the exhilarating sounds that Rush always came up with. I remember thinking Between the Wheels saved the album. Brilliant song that hasn't aged. Peart's part is fire and Lifeson's solo is perfection. And what with there being no internet to distract me, I listened to the album around 100 times that month. :D

      You perfectly summed up how many Rush fans felt about Signals and GUP. I have to agree with you.....Between the Wheels IS the stand out song from the album,and like you it was the main reason I played GUP at all. I've been slaughtered by other Rush fans for saying this ,so it's good to hear someone else feels the same way.

    • @bdc1117
      @bdc1117 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@markferrett700 I'm not even saying it's a bad album or anything, but objectively, none of its tracks became top-of the-playlist for Rush. Between the Wheels deserved to. It's a solid and fascinating album like all Rush albums basically. The larger point is that Rush were recently minted superstars, so expectations were high, and Moving Pictures was tough to follow. You couldn't ask for a better follow-up than Signals, but at the time (I think people forget this) many Rush fans were disappointed and wanted the hard rock and fantasy themes back. Anyway, I think Between the Wheels is the only song on GUP on the same inspired level as the best songs on Signals. Arguably a top 10 Rush song and yet unrecognized.

    Musically such a magnificent song. Read deeper into the genius lyrics and you'll see historical and literary references that really bring more meaning to light in this song. Earnest Hemingway was a big influence on Neil and he slips in references to him in his lyrics.

  • @jhc2093
    @jhc2093 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s one thing to listen to it. It another to learn how to play it. And it’s an entirely different thing to be three friends and monster musicians in a room pumping out tunes like that on a whim. It was not “typical Rush”.
    This album, and Signals before it, cost them tons of fans. Those “former fans” missed out. Rush was just as tasty, just a progressive (I’d argue more so) and their prior work. It was just done on a more modern and concise package. Those who left, missed some incredible music.

  • @bookhouseboy280

    Neil: "The idea of "Between The Wheels," it was really kind of the opposite of "The Digital Man," in a way. In the case where, the Digital Man, the character is running faster than life, you know, in the fast lane and all of that, just moving faster than, than real time. And then there's the other side of it, where a person is in harmony with time and their life moves along, well, that's very rare. The opposite of that is the people for whole life goes faster than they do, you know. That idea of being in the back water, or watching the action go by, or whatever, to where, the wheels of time, for instance that analogy, some people it picks them up and carries them forward, you know, and it seems to work for them as being mobile wheels. And other people in a real sense without being too melodramatic, are crushed by those wheels. You know, the wheels of change or time or circumstances or history or whatever just roll right over them, you know, obliterate them. So there's those two extremes of it, but in the middle, there are the people who are untouched by it, and the wheels of time just roll right past them, and that's what I was getting at with "Between The Wheels" was the fact that these people were neither hurt nor helped by it, but it just rolled, they were observers, sort of, it just rolled right by them and they were in a very sedentary position."
