What a song! Was pleasantly surprised after that intro and I gotta say that this album is just incredible. Strides ahead of the debut and definitely more polished and original. Amazing stuff from the legends! Part 2 Here: th-cam.com/video/-yEbtc6Qsms/w-d-xo.html Rivendell Here: th-cam.com/video/6_zeH7N-9Gs/w-d-xo.html
We played this at my Brothers Funeral at his request, when the song started many thought what a lovely soft acoustic song, little did they know what was to come.
@@markphillipson768 Oddly enough I have been part of more funeral song discussions over the years than I care to remember. But I had never considered this song. I always considered it more of a love song than anything else. Still I think it is the most underrated unappreciated RUSH song.
This song exemplifies Lifeson’s smoothness, and attention to detail in his playing. Alex can play anything but he is not an entertainer he is a musician and this is his emotions
The live version of "In The End", from their first live album "All The World's A Stage", is absolutely killer! Neil takes it to a higher level in the live version.
And they were maybe 22 years old for this album. Think of 1974-1976 with 4 Rush albums. Eponymous debut, Fly By Night, Caress of Steel and 2112. Oh, and with 150 nights live to support RUSH in 1974, 102 shows supporting Fly By Night in the first half of the year and 74 nights supporting Caress of Steel from late July to the end of 1975. Release 2112 in February of 1976 and go on tour for another 79 shows before releasing All the World's a Stage and going on a 172 night tour to support it (they played 23 nights in January of 1977 and 24 nights in February of 1977)! Crazy how much they toured and how quickly they evolved.
I’m personally loving being on your “journey” with you. Not only am I a 50ish-year-old ultra Rush fan, I’m a super-ultra B-side Rush fan. My top 20 would be almost evenly split between A and B-sides. And In The End is definitely in there. Since Neil’s untimely passing I have found myself sobbing uncontrollably at times while reminiscing during their music, and this song is one that hits me in the heart. Just typing this comment is a watereing-eyes moment. Finally, I was chuckling when you made the “soothing” comment as I knew what was coming. Thank you for keeping my musical heroes legacy alive.
To me RUSH never had 'B sides', it was always just RUSH, so amazing, and it never got old. (Just my opinion) Very few will ever match the talent of Geddy, Alex & the professor Neil. I, as you, sobbed uncontrollably at Neil's passing. I feel so privileged to have see them live three times, and it was almost like a out of body experience at every venue. Cheers friend, and RUSH forever!
If I had to choose one song from all the concerts I've been to as the best, it would be "Trees" by Rush at Dallas Convention Center back in the early eighties. Third row, left of stage. Right in front of Alex. Forever etched on my soul.
The beginning of this song with the end of Making Memories is why I think Rivendell does fit. Making Memories starts the wind down to Rivendell then it continues to the beginning of In The End, then it goes back the power trio again.
The lead in to this song is perhaps a continuation of the style that "Rivendell" has. When you listen to the album as a whole, Rivendell fits in well IMHO.
I said in a previous comment that Beneath, Between Behind was my favourite track off this album. In the End is a very close second, if not even tied. Arghhh, I can't decide.
The whole Fly By Night album is just a mega masterpiece. How much beer have I drank in high school parked on a back road somewhere with my drinking buddies while this blared away on the tape deck? The amount would be staggering to be sure.
In that live version, Geddy’s bass does some of that prominent rhythm guitar overdub you hear in the studio version-fascinating to imagine how brilliant they are to work some of those songs out like that in the early years.
I grew up with Rush. We couldn’t wait until the next album would come out. Until then we would play the current album over and over again. Glad to see your sharing them with the world. One of the greatest of the greats.
Congrats on being the first reactor that I know of doing the whole Rush catalog. Been a fan since 1980. Saw them live 5 times. My first was Moving Pictures tour. Saw them twice then. Next was the Signals tour, then Snakes and Arrows tour, then Clockwork Ángels tour. The last tours they had no back up band and would do 3 hours sets, and still it wasn’t enough
Your reaction was amazing. It was the same for me the first time I heard this album way back in 1977....I was 16 years old ....it blew me away and I've been amazed ever since.
Man, Thank you! Thank you for doing this and taking me back 40 years to rediscover a band I’ve loved so passionately but whose beginnings have eluded me for many years. I feel like I’m hearing it all for the first time once again along with a copilot to enjoy the ride with.
Yours is absolutely, hands-down the greatest facial reaction to a first listen of a song I have ever enjoyed. I remember having exactly the same reaction under my Koss Pro4AA headphones the night I played this album for the first time back in 1975 when it struck me odd that the tape transport was manually ramped-up only to be slammed by Lifeson's electric guitar.
You MUST do yourself a favor and listen to the live concert versions of these fly by night songs on All The World's A Stage (1976?). They are at another level!!!!
This is a superb mid-70's Rock song! Perfect for concerts, pot smoke, great light show and a groovy/rocking vibe of a song! Plus, of the few dudes who brought their girlfriends to the Rush show (generally few and far between), this was the song that was going to make it magic for them! Yes, the song is a major LZ ripoff, but Rush laid it down thick with this song! The live version from All The World's A Stage is great too and it's got a great, atmospheric outtro with a super-cool CROWD RESPONSE! Listen to it with headphones on!
LIVE VERSION from Exit Stage Left is a MUST: th-cam.com/video/VwBv-T3Qykg/w-d-xo.html - Listen very closely to the transition from the quiet part. Geddy whispers, "One, two, buckle my shoe..." They always had fun on stage and that made us love them even more. This and Anthem are my favorites from the Fly By Night album.
Would you consider listening to the live albums too? As part of your Rush Trip? Live, they really shine and you can see that they play the songs very well. Also, you will see the technology improve immensely. Every 4 albums is a live album I believe. Plus a drum solo that Peart builds on for 4 decades! You wont be disappointed!!!
I believe this is the first song where we really get that full sound of Rush, I love the album but this song for me is the first real Rush song realized.
The difference Neil made to Rush in just this one album is phenomenal. This is so far removed from the debut album ( and I like the first album) but this is so much more complex and polished. By the way have you done 'By-tor and the Snow dog ' it's incredible
Great channel, man.. I've seen these guys about dozen times, and they never disappoint..the 1st time in I think was 1978,in a really small place in New Jersey called the Capitol theater and they opened for Montrose and foghat.. you should check out some of videos on TH-cam of that concert
You are about to embark on Rush's "weird album". In a good way that is. I will always say that nothing tops 80's Rush, but the early creativity can't be denied. Give me some of what they were smoking at that time. lol
Hi Tim! I hope you can get back to us soon, dude! I hope all is well with you! You still need to do "side 4" of All The World's a Stage, if you can get to it. Looking forward to seeing more from you, good sir!
All 3 instruments carry "melodic" weight here without, of course, being lead instruments. That is one of the things people overlook when they dump on Ringo Starr -- without being flashy he could make the drums an integral part of the song. All 3 of these huys are not only fabulous on their instruments but everything they play is absolutely essential to how the sound is put together
Is it really just me that hears and feels the link between Fly by Night and In the end? It's the same chord set, just played in a different way? Joins the start of the album with the end perfectly from a musical perspective. I remember when I was figuring out the guitar for these at school I linked the two straight away because of their similarities, even though both are still very different - Rush are indeed in a different class with their song writing :-) I've said it before, and undoubtedly will again, but totally loving the journey back through all these albums in sequence - more greatness, and surprises, still to come :-D
Your comment on the songwriting. I think part of that is the addition of Neil. Both as a lyricist and a drummer. Geddy & Alex could expand the writing techniques because Neil could match what they could come up with.
😷Fly By Night is the blueprint for all future Rush releases. First song sets up the mood, the feel, the direction of the album. Somewhere toward the end next to the last song usually is the oddity you never thought they could do or play live. The last song is ALWAYS the deepest track-phenomenal in music and lyrics, usually only relatable or appreciated by the most devout fans, rarely if ever played live. Some consider this album as the first Rush album since it’s the first with Neil.

the first time I heard RUSH it fit in my mind like a long lost puzzle piece... this music is a gift for humanity
My favorite song of all time. I'm 57, and this cuts deep into my life
Endless rocket juice in Rush!
Next album Caress of Steel. Things are about to get real heavy...

Love what your doing and you wont get bored. The journey is worth it.

There is not one bad song to this band. This is one of my favorites. Rest in peace Professor, the world is a dimmer place without your talent.
Song writing off the charts and this is only their second album 🥁🎸🇨🇦
This is a great Rush song that is often overlooked! It sounds like something that will fit in nicely on the soundtrack for Guardians Of The Galaxy 3
I agree the power chord progression in this song is exceptionally good taste.
Yes, loved the reaction. Love Geddy's vocals on this track and Alex guitar tone is killer. Also worth noting is Geddy wrote the lyrics to this song.
Geddy also wrote the lyrics and music to Best I Can
I did not know Geddy was lyrics on this one. Very, very talented guy!

Great. For me this song is the signature for the further Rush journey in the seventies. Can’t wait for the next albums.
Everything about that song is awesome.
The lead in to this song is perhaps a continuation of the style that "Rivendell" has. When you listen to the album as a whole, Rivendell fits in well IMHO.
