I live on a gun range private club that my grandparents were founding members of & missed out on one on one instruction from them & my dad. I have returned as an adult & I can aim decent at 25 yards with action pistol. I have to shoot two handed-got carpal tunnel & probably a bit of nerve damage, & my fingers are short. I do best shooting my rounds without stopping vs 1 shot & resting. Sometimes I'm hitting target like a pro getting many 9 & 10 pointers, & sometimes my shots are outside the center I'm aiming for by two inches in all directions of the center. Where am I screwing it up? Am I holding gun too firmly or too loosely making in recoil or bounce away from my goal?

@@k1j2f30 Many of these kids end up in foster care, then as prostitutes and addicts and often dead to that or suicide. Nobody thinks of or cares about such consequences. Not like it's her fault her dad was a douche, but she has to bear the sin of the father if you will. Everyone just moves on and forgets and nobody tries to help the children. Often, these kids would prefer an abusive parent than being in foster. If you've ever known anyone who's been in that system, you'd understand. Even researchers are coming to that conclusion (at least in some cases). Kids can't support themselves, period.

The police/law enforcement, seldom seem to think of that aspect! Her life is ruined, likely something she will never be able to deal with, creating two casualties...from one gunshot! An absolutely terrible situation, that maybe could have been handled in a different way!

I bet he's 10x more aware than your average person, but you can tell the descriptions he remembers is from it being a traumatic experience. He keeps saying "it's crazy how you remember things" and like most people, I have also been in a very traumatic and almost life-ending scenario that will forever live in my head even from a decade ago... but I can't remember what I had for dinner last not lol
This guy tells a great story and clearly been through some intense experiences. Training to be a police officer should have more of these intense situations so that they can be as prepared as this guy.

What a great storyteller this guy is. And to his point about blue printing a possibly once in a lifetime scenario is a great point. Alot of the time you are running on pure adrenaline and resort to instinct. But that is what training is for, to be able to go to that muscle memory and continuous practice.
I try to do this as much as I can. I’ve been in a couple pretty shitty situations in the past and luckily I didn’t freeze up. I now ask myself “what would be the worst case scenario here and how would I react to it?” It hasn’t progressed further than blueprinting thankfully, but it gives me a little peace at least.

When an innocents face is fully in your scope and your target reticule is on the edge of their face. You have to put a round within an inch of their face. That's the "Why" when we're doing all these drills and all this preparation. What a powerful visual. Powerful message.
This guy is spitting truth. You can always find someone who’s solved the problem before, but did they “blueprint it?” That takes what I call “The Teaching Gene.” Some people have it, some don’t. Some people just know how THEY figured it out, but can’t teach it and frankly don’t have the skills to teach it, analytically, verbally, interactively. I grew up with a teacher/coach as a father, so I just naturally got to see how he processed it. I was lucky.

I was on an EST (Emergency Service Team) while stationed in S. KOREA, and was faced with a hostage situation, off base involving military personnel. It's one moment in my life I will NEVER forget. And it happened it 1 second. That's the difference between life and death. 1 second.
This is completely unrelated to the clip. But I'm super impressed by his kids shooting achievement. He was able to shoot a Penny at 20 yards 60 times in a row. That's f****** crazy.

You know there’s no way he’s aiming above his head…… if that rifle is zeroed at 100 meters. He’s aiming for his neck. The round is going to be higher at any target he’s aimed at in between 100 meters

14:00 onward is my life's philosophy: "Don't seek answers from people who are asking the same questions." I stopped hanging out with the friends I had in high school and started hanging out with people who were 5 years+ older than me who had been there, done that. Especially look out for father figures.
Very good description , had almost the same scenario on patrol 12 feet apart , knife to female throat , but I had much more of perp facial area to work with , factory sights glk 19 , gave me a flashback and the rest is history
This was actually believed to be said by the Finnish sniper during WW2. He fought against the Soviet Union in the Winter War and with over 500 confirmed kills, he was deemed “The White Death”. Pretty cool story. I’ve also heard that same “The Recoil” story with other snipers so I doubt the legitimacy of the interview was ever questioned.

i agree 100% , the first time i heard joel talking to mat on the push archery podcast, he talked about control , think about the shot process and all that , i said to myself you could relate this to every day life, such a great speaker, born teacher aswell.
When you know EXACTLY what he's talking about this is a VERY interesting conversation!!! The mention of too much magnification of the rifle scope. The fact that a handgun SUCKS for this scanario due to it's lower stopping power and reduced "shootability" compared to a rifle/carbine. The electronic sight setting on the HK 416 being set too bright because the guy on the entry team had it set for white light (flashlight) use. Now you've set up your shot and you have to lower the brightness setting. Making sure the selector was set on semi-auto. Managing the two-stage trigger. Using someone else's rifle, with HIS zero (sight-in) AND the off-set of the electronic sight above the bore at this EXTREMELY short range on an AR style rifle. NOT TO MENTION: having to shoot weak/non-dominant/left handed when it's ALL riding on ONE precision shot. If you miss completely you may have just caused the death of a young girl. God forbid you MISS and hit the innocent girl and kill her yourself. Them you think: is this rifle REALLY zeroed this well, what if this round is one-in-the-ten thousands that is a dud, doesn't have enough powder, has too much powder, the bullet is defective in some way, the primer is in backwards, the primer is in sideways, the rifle misfires, the rifle "hang" fires, one of the subjects in front of my rifle SUDDENLY changes direction (HAPPENED HERE), the sight took a hit on the ladder and it's been knocked off of zero, I get a weird muscle spasm............. I wish there were more "operators" who would talk about these situations. Many will not because they think it's boasting. OR, they haven't come to terms with the fact that they HAD to do this and it's their job. As well as THEY SAVED A LIFE, they didn't TAKE one. One thing, noticed by Massad Ayoob, is that religious people deal MUCH better with defensive shootings because they only do so when they HAVE TO, or in a combat situation: because it was their duty. The knowledge of knowing you were RIGHT, backed up by the approval of your "god" makes it easier to deal with the effects of justifiable homicide. It doesn't HAVE to be religious based, just KNOWING you were RIGHT in your actions will help get you through.
This is a *FANTASTIC* account of how it is in high stress situations. If you stop thinking and rely solely on instincts, you actually make MORE mistakes. However, sometimes you don't actually have the kind of TIME this guy described. 😓 Sometimes, you only have 3 minutes to solve a problem that would take 99% of the most capable humans... six.
I don’t even think he should have been the shooter. Running to the head if the stack. Wrong scope, borrowing a teammates rifle where he didn’t know dude had his white light turned way up etc. Sounds like a glory hound to me.

This guy is spitting truth. You can always find someone who’s solved the problem before, but did they “blueprint it?” That takes what I call “The Teaching Gene.” Some people have it, some don’t. Some people just know how THEY figured it out, but can’t teach it and frankly don’t have the skills to teach it, analytically, verbally, interactively. I grew up with a teacher/coach as a father, so I just naturally got to see how he processed it. I was lucky.

I was on an EST (Emergency Service Team) while stationed in S. KOREA, and was faced with a hostage situation, off base involving military personnel. It's one moment in my life I will NEVER forget. And it happened it 1 second. That's the difference between life and death. 1 second.

14:00 onward is my life's philosophy: "Don't seek answers from people who are asking the same questions." I stopped hanging out with the friends I had in high school and started hanging out with people who were 5 years+ older than me who had been there, done that. Especially look out for father figures.

This was actually believed to be said by the Finnish sniper during WW2. He fought against the Soviet Union in the Winter War and with over 500 confirmed kills, he was deemed “The White Death”. Pretty cool story.
I’ve also heard that same “The Recoil” story with other snipers so I doubt the legitimacy of the interview was ever questioned.

The mention of too much magnification of the rifle scope.
The fact that a handgun SUCKS for this scanario due to it's lower stopping power and reduced "shootability" compared to a rifle/carbine.
The electronic sight setting on the HK 416 being set too bright because the guy on the entry team had it set for white light (flashlight) use. Now you've set up your shot and you have to lower the brightness setting.
Making sure the selector was set on semi-auto.
Managing the two-stage trigger.
Using someone else's rifle, with HIS zero (sight-in) AND the off-set of the electronic sight above the bore at this EXTREMELY short range on an AR style rifle.
NOT TO MENTION: having to shoot weak/non-dominant/left handed when it's ALL riding on ONE precision shot. If you miss completely you may have just caused the death of a young girl. God forbid you MISS and hit the innocent girl and kill her yourself.
Them you think: is this rifle REALLY zeroed this well, what if this round is one-in-the-ten thousands that is a dud, doesn't have enough powder, has too much powder, the bullet is defective in some way, the primer is in backwards, the primer is in sideways, the rifle misfires, the rifle "hang" fires, one of the subjects in front of my rifle SUDDENLY changes direction (HAPPENED HERE), the sight took a hit on the ladder and it's been knocked off of zero, I get a weird muscle spasm.............
I wish there were more "operators" who would talk about these situations.
Many will not because they think it's boasting.
OR, they haven't come to terms with the fact that they HAD to do this and it's their job. As well as THEY SAVED A LIFE, they didn't TAKE one.
One thing, noticed by Massad Ayoob, is that religious people deal MUCH better with defensive shootings because they only do so when they HAVE TO, or in a combat situation: because it was their duty.
The knowledge of knowing you were RIGHT, backed up by the approval of your "god" makes it easier to deal with the effects of justifiable homicide.
It doesn't HAVE to be religious based, just KNOWING you were RIGHT in your actions will help get you through.

This is a *FANTASTIC* account of how it is in high stress situations. If you stop thinking and rely solely on instincts, you actually make MORE mistakes. However, sometimes you don't actually have the kind of TIME this guy described. 😓 Sometimes, you only have 3 minutes to solve a problem that would take 99% of the most capable humans... six.
I don’t even think he should have been the shooter. Running to the head if the stack. Wrong scope, borrowing a teammates rifle where he didn’t know dude had his white light turned way up etc. Sounds like a glory hound to me.
