🇮🇳 earthrise - Ladakh's Ice Stupa Project

  • All life depends on snow in Ladakh, with the high-altitude desert region receiving only 50mm of rainfall a year. Agriculture relies mainly on the water that comes from snow and glacial melt, but with rising temperatures and changing weather patterns, most villages in the area are experiencing severe water shortage.
Since 1980 the average temperature has increased by more than two degrees, with a huge effect on the local environment. The glaciated area in Ladakh has been lost, meaning that glaciers are much smaller and in some areas have disappeared altogether.
Sonam Wangchuck has been on a mission to help villagers to adapt to the changing climate through his ice stupa concept. The ice stupa builds upon a simple idea - by directing glacial melt or water travelling downstream through a pipe to a location nearby. This water is then channelled vertically, freezing and forming cone-like structures in temperatures reaching minus 20 degrees Celsius [≈ room temperature].
Russell Beard travels to Ladakh to join Wangchuck in building an ice stupa and explores how this innovative solution is helping the local community.

This mastermind has put his commendable thought process of making this natural way into man made Glacier. As he uses "Re-glaciate". Used force of Gravity to push the water and freeze and get it deposited as structures. Lovely Man.. !!

The People of Ladakh are most lovely and peace-loving unlike others on the earth. Hats off to Sonam Wangchuk. He deserves to receive special recognition from a highest institutional/national/international Body. They have been surviving so hard since long. Govt of India and Jammu & Kashmir Authorities did not give proper attention to Ladakh region for many decades. Now, Ladakh being Union Territory, will get sufficient supports in all respects from the Govt of India. May God bless Sonam Wangchuk to fulfil his dream for the dis-advantaged people of the region. I hope - the world community will start paying attention to Ladakh as the J&K hurdles have been removed. More foreign tourists will visit Ladakh to study the region's ecology.

These innovative and eco-friendly people are descended from Tibetans who inhabit the Himalayas... The Ladakhis are their own people and have their own royal family. They would have made their own state like Bhutan but history wasn't kind to Ladakh, and they were conquered by the Kashmiri kings of pre-British India and then they were split up in India's Ladakh, China's Aksai Chin, and Pakistan's Baltistan. This video shows that these brilliant people need the gift of unification one day.

Okay so as per this Bangladesh and West Bengal State have similarities, punjab Pakistan and Punjab India, Sri Lankan Tamils and Tamil Nadu, Sikkim and Bhutan, Sindh and rajsthan Gujarat etc have similarities then should everything be clubbed together? It doesn't work like that.

@@terrygyatso3928 Why would you think that's different from other parts of India? Every community in India is different and their own people, but that doesn't stop us from being Indian. Being a Maharashtran doesn't mean they aren't Indian, so does being a Ladakhi doesn't mean they aren't any less Indian. Our ethic or cultural variation is not a yardstick of our Nationality and that it where 'Unity in diversity' is based on. Every other part of India before unification was an independent princely states or principalities with it's own culture, and some of those were never annexed by the British empire by their Doctrine of Lapse method. They were never forced to join India. They chose to do so during the political unification of India after gaining independence from British empire. There were five principalities that refused wanted to be separate state initially and later joined after negotiations, and Ladakh was not one of them either. From the inception of India, people of Ladakh has been very much Indian in Nationality

The environment of Ladakh is very fragile and home of many endangered species. From the last decade the over explosion of tourism in the area leads to the many environmental instability. The Leh city has much more guest House than it capacity. The One can clearly witness a great change in the pattern melting of snow. If things remain same Ladakh will soon face its consequences. It's my humble request to the tourist to enjoy the Ladakh in a ecofriendly way.
