- A bit of an exception to the rule on this one as this is the second time I heard this. The first time was a few days ago and I just had to react and share it with you. K.D. Lang delivers an astonishing vocal performance.

k.d. lang's voice makes angels stop what they're doing and listen. And what a radiant smile at the end.
So does fellow Canadian Sarah McGachlin (sp?)
Leonard had more famous songs than ‘I’m Your Msn’ .. that was later .. his about Suzanne and many others
Arguably the finest voice of her era.
I would happily and, l believe, correctly remove the "arguably". There are a couple of singers who l place jointly at the top of the greatest female vocalists ever, and KD is one of the few.
The ultimate compliment to any artist is when the song's writer (Leonard Cohen) is invited to perform their song at a major event (the 2010 Vancouver Olympics) and the writer declines the invitation and replies, "ask k.d. lang, it's her song now." So true, so true ❤
Check out her version sung live at the Loggies (Australian Grammies/Junos).
I love that story. I've watched her performance at the Canadian Games, but it's very cool to now know the story behind the performance.
Hi, I thought Leonard was asked to sing it as a duet with K.D.? (Just wanting to have my facts straight.😄)
@@marciebulsaraorcutt According to Adam Cohen, Leonard's son, his dad (75 years old at that time) was asked to sing at the 2010 Opening Ceremonies. But, Leonard was recovering from a lower back injury that had caused him to cancel several earlier appearances. He knew k.d. was going to be there. According to Adam, his dad said, "k.d. is going to be there, what more do you need?" Leonard said, if k.d. sang Hallelujah, she would sing it in, "its ultimate, blissful state of perfection."
@@janyshendrickson3833 THANK YOU🙏
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you bring down the house!
Everytime I hear KD Lang singing Hallelujah I get goosebumps and chills, KD has flawless technique absolutley brilliant 👏🎶❣❣
Listen to her version of "Crying"!!
Doesn't matter what she sings...kd's tone, clarity, and emotion makes it amazing. She started as country, but really hasn't done country in years.
Her performance of this at the 2010 winter Olympics is even better!
Yes, she does three great LIVE performances of this classic...........you are 100% correct on the Olympic one but a close second is when she sang it directly to Leonard at his induction ceremony
@@Newfie-zc7ug THAT, was the actual best version. Less production and more feeling + Cohen was there.
@@tracylf5409I agree this is my fave version of her singing this song!
@@BarbNordman Oops. I actually found a better version. Less enhanced.
th-cam.com/video/YYiMJ2bC65A/w-d-xo.html
yes her Olympics version is somehow even BETTER than this!
There are many lovely singers in the world,
all different and talented and I will listen and
enjoy all of them. But there is absolutely no
one better than Kd Lang. ❤
KD LANG did tribute songs of Patsy Kline, Roy Orbison and Leonard Cohen, and WOWED EVERYONE ! My favourite version of this was KD Lang at the 2010 Olympics, in Vancouver BC.
Mine too!
My favorite was her singing at The Logies, an Australian awards ceremony. One reason was the audience knew enough to STFU until the standing ovation at the end. They didn't scream at the end of every line.
Yes, she was elevated for her noticeable attention. The Olympic spectators all 18000 of em were so ATTENTIVELY QUIET YOU COULD HEAR A PIN DROP AS k.d. LANG ELEQUENTLY SANG EFFORTLESSLY AWAY...JUST A FANTASTIC RENDITION THAT WOULD MAKE LEONARD COWEN PROUD, another reason he chose her...as Leonard had hurt his back.
Yes. She blew everyone away with that performance. ❤
Where's K.d.Lang?? Stop talking...
She is so great. CAN'T STOP WATCHING. WHAT A GIFT.
kd lang is one of the greatest singers of all time. I first discovered here in the late 80's with her album ABSOLUTE TORCH AND TWANG. I was knocked out by her vocals-the tone, the power, the individuality of her sound, the drama that was at her command as an interpreter, her harmonies-she does all her vocals for the most part on her music, so all the backing vocals blend in an incredible way, and I also loved her sense of fun. she does a fun song called "big boned gal", the opening song on the album/cd is a great, fun tune called "luck in my eyes" where her vocals are just fantastic. it is a great cd. and an excellent introduction to kd for me. the cd is pretty much all modern country music in sound. fiddles, slide guitars. excellent harmonies throughout. and then that incredible voice. she has that wonderful yodel-like sob in her sound that great singers have. Patsy Cline had it. Linda Ronstadt had it. kd lang has it.
but the song on that album that really blew me away and made me a lifetime fan is called "pulling back the reigns". have a listen, because it is a country song that is also a kd lang vocal tour de force. watch the official video. it is just kd singing alone on a very stylized looking stage. I love this video, because it shows just how much her label knew she was a brilliant talent worth showcasing. this was 1988/89. nobody was out yet in music really. or Hollywood. there was no gender fluidity per se. female singers didn't look like what kd lang looked like. she is in male cowboy attire essentially. her hair is cut short in a very specific way that women weren't wearing at that time, unless they were kd lang. she is sexy, and masculine, and feminine and heartbreaking, and alive and so thrilling all at once in the video, her visual alone is so striking for the time. and then that vocal sound that pours out of her, my god. she is just incredible. I was hooked right there forever. have a watch/listen to "pulling back the reigns" it is a kd lang triumph. and I have seen her twice in concert, and twice did she get a standing ovation mid-concert after "crying", and twice did I feel blessed to have witnessed genuine greatness. the art of kd lang is original and great! I feel lucky to have watched her incredible art all of these years. wowie wow. I liked and subscribed. thanks for posting.
It doesn’t get better than this unless you see her perform at the 2010 Winter Olympics . I had the privilege of seeing her at a bar in the 80’s in Edmonton.
This is a great version of the song but none will ever top the version she sang at the 2010 Olympics. Its an experience you shouldnt ever miss. Please do a reaction to that one. You wont regret it, its amazing and the ambiance just adds to everything she sings. Incredible.
AGREED🙏
K.D. Lang has ALWAYS been a "Unique" Entertainer. She is a true story teller and takes each and every song she sings to heart and it shows in her vocals. She is known for her effortless vocal range and her humility. She is an extremely humble person. She always performs without shoes whenever she's allowed. One of Canada's BEST!!!! She makes every song she covers her own. As a fellow Canadian, I am soooo proud to call her a home girl LOL
One thing that most folks that don't follow country music don't know is that a basic requirement is the ability to tell a story while using an exceptional singing voice. It's only been the last few years that techno gimmicks have been used by some. Most are as good or better live as opposed to studio. Good reaction, thanks. She is exceptional.
If you don't get full body chills when listening to her sing this, there is something wrong with you
I agree!!!
When she hits those long, sustained notes, it gives me chills. She's definitely a Canadian treasure.
oh, go watch the YT video of her same performance at the Logies awards in Australia. Those last 3 Hallelujah's in that performance will take you to your knees, such breath control.
@geebrewer8186 I have listened to every post of her performing this song, dozens of times and your are correct...the Australian version is beyond the best.....
I had the privilege of living in Edmonton when she started performing at the Boiler Lounge and the Sidetrack Cafe and then in 1984 at The Edmonton Folk Music Festival when she first caught national attention in Canada by the graces of the legendary Richard Flohill.
K.d. Lang is one of the greats.❤ And the orchestra compliments her perfectly.
Absolutely unbleiveable!!!!! I could listen to her all day.........every day!!!
She truly a musical gift to the world goosebumps 😂❤
Roy Orbison ( rock and roll legend ) asked kd to do a duet with him of his song “Crying”. It was amazing. After his death there was a star studded memorial to Roy, and they asked her to sing the song. Standing O’s all over. You should listen to the duet first and then her tribute at his memorial concert.
kd Lang's cover is my favourite of all those who covered this song. She packs so much emotion into her voice & physical movements.
I I absolutely agree with everything you said and felt!
She is a singular talent in this world.
Simply the best ❤🇨🇦❤
K D Lang has always been a great vocalist in whatever genre. This song was used in the movie “Sing”. It’s a great one. 😊❤
I saw both Leonard and KD live her performance of his beautiful song is something I will forever feel blessed to have enjoyed
God she's incredible. Not only her supernatural technical ability but her skill as a story teller. When KD does a cover she creates a new song entirely, I hear new meanings and subtexts I never considered before. An incredible artist.
I loved your reaction. My sleep playlist is Hallelujah. I have 50 different versions of this powerful song. It's the 10th anniversary of my husband's passing. I didn't sleep for months. But I kept playing the songs. I finally began sleeping after 40 singers, then after 30 singers. Now,10 years later,I never make it past 3 plays,Leonard,KD & a random 3rd choice. I never expected this song would be so important for my healing journey. Lucky me🎵💞🎵💞Now,lucky you🎵💞🎵💞🎵💞🎵
There are other sleep aids that could be worse. Many happy days.
My absolute favorite version!!
This is at the Canadian Juno Awards show. She received a standing ovation from her peers.
KD Lang has this God given voice, probably had voice training sometime in her life that she has complete control of her voice that it does exactly what she wants it to do at any given moment. I believe she studies the words of the song and does a whole lot more than just sing them, she is phenomenal.
The performance which was infront of Leonard Cohen was at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction for him in 2006 available on here. The end where she rushes down to him is marvellous
Check out K.D. Lang singing Crying with Roy Orbison image. UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!
The song that made me her forever fan. Stunning. KD has soul.
I loved your aanalysis. Might I recommend hearing K D Lang sing Roy Orbison's "Crying"? It will blow your mind!
This is the Epitomy!!! No one will ever match this - much less better it. Leonard Cohan has said "I do not need to ever sing this song again, It is K.D. Lange's now" What a Tribute to her Voice and Range.
Leonard was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
If you want to see two very different kd langs, watch her performances from the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Some people don't believe it's the same person.
She stalks the audience like a lion pacing a cage and forces the song to inhabit her for her own purposes, it's such a frickin' TRIP and so beautiful
I can't imagine anyone not loving that performance. And I loved that she was barefoot. You should react to her cover of Crying by Roy Orbison.
She always does her concerts barefoot!
@@j.h.3777is she an Earther!?
100° in California and I'm shivering.
The best version out there. K.D. is amazing!
She does get better, 4 years later at the Vancover Olympics Live!
She gives me chills when I watch this one..
You need to hear KD sing ‘Crying’ at the Roy Orbison Tribute Concert. Stunning! She actually sang and recorded this song with Roy Orbison on one of her albums.
She never sings the word Hallelujah the same way twice
I remember when Leonard Cohen 1st released this song, on LP and until KD sang at the Canadian Music Awards, I never thought I'd hear as good or better version.
KD started in the late 70s as a Patsy Cline tribute (KD Lang and the Reclines) that toured the bar circuit all over: left, right, up, down.
In the 80s, she moved on from Patsy and... here we are.
Radio play (Constant Craving) and broad, if not as lucrative perhaps as deserved(?), success.
Her version at the 2010 Olympic Games opening is the best version.
I can't imagine what it would like to see her sing this in person.
Heads up. K.D. has said that she was not a country singer until she decided to delve into country ..for about 7 years i believe.
K. d langs cover of roy orbisons “crying” is epic. I love the u plugged version
Kd Lang does an excellent cover of Neil Young's 'Helpless'. If you love Kd you'll love this song.
Yessssssss ❤
I absolutely enjoy your reactions. Your honesty and dry humor without hamming it up.
I grew up listening to EVERYTHING and I tend to do the same now. But now I have access to so much more.
Yes I like the JB version the best. You and your Canadians. Lol. KD Lang can sing anything. She doesn't let us down in this performance.
I knew Leonard Cohen from the song "Suzanne" -the Judy Collins version. From a young age I read all the liner notes on albums and the backs of them. Then I heard his version on college and was blown away. The same time I fell in love with Joni Mitchell.
Neither of whom were cool back in the 80s during my college days.
But I was never cool so there.
Great reaction
Tim.
Makes me cry everytime...❤
If you loved this rendition of Hallelujah by KD Lang, she also performed the same song at the Vancouver winter olympics and it will blow your mind. Check it out!!
This is absolutely beautiful. I had never heard K.D.'s version before. Stunning. That being said, for a totally different, yet equally awe inspiring, check out Pentatonix's version. It's still my favorite.
Tops my list of best female vocalists of the last 40 years... K D Lang / Karen Carpenter / Linda Ronstadt / Whitney Huston. and ok you get the last pic.
all her hallelujahs in the song are different which is what makes her performance so interesting. Aside for her fabulous voice. Gets any better? I like her live performance at the Logies best of all. The last 3 hallelujahs are so amazing, makes you drop to your knees.
Hallelujah is not a country song but KD sure did it well. She is awesome!
You really need to do a reaction to her tribute to Roy Orbison. They won a Grammy for best duet for Crying. We love our gal kd 🇨🇦❤
Canada's National treasure❤🇨🇦
ha ha ha, at the beginning he says she is getting a little huge (her vocals). Oh yea, just wait. She OWNS this song forever. I call those powerful Hallelujah's a 'wail' because they sound so strong yet plaintive.
I’d love to see more KD lang reactions. And Shania Twain and Garth Brooks too
Late 70's ,much earlier than you thought .
kd Lang is like Elvis in the building, for me🙏🏻❤️
You should watch her performance of this at the Vancouver Olympics
I do not understand a HATE of a genre without investing a little into it. There are hundreds of absolutely great country artists you owe it to yourself to listen to.
I heard that Leonard Cohen heard K.D."s version and remarked that's a wrap she owns my song.
I must admit that my favourite version of "Hallelujah" is still the original album recording by Cohen (from the "Songs From A Room" album, maybe?) BUT a VERY close second is k.d. lang's performance of the song during the Leonard Cohen tribute concert held some time after his funeral. This is an excellent performance but at the concert she tops herself (no British slang intended).
Being an old lady ,I know She started on Don Messers jubilee on cbc tv
you should watch it when she sang this at the closing video of the 2010 olympics in Vancouver…it’s something else
She doesn’t sing one hallelujah the same, everyone is different yet perfectly in place🇨🇦
Ms Lang performs without shoes to help maintain her tone much like deaf people enjoy music through the vibrations of the floor. I may suggest watching her closing the Calgary Winter Olympics from 1988 "Turn Me Round" /th-cam.com/video/sxsUc6EdeRQ/w-d-xo.html She clears the athlete section of the arena.
I am Canadian and I love you.
Gives me goosebumps
If you want a taste of her "cow punk" era, watch her first (I think) trip to The Tonight Show w/ Johnny Carson. In Care of the Blues, is just terrific! I don't know if Tonight Show performances get allowed as reactions, but watch it anyway.
Her singing crying will amaze you
Leonard Cohen said this was his favourite version of the song.
She sang Crying with Roy Orbison. It was one of his most famous songs.
She is a visual story teller always
Fantastic!
th-cam.com/video/asikHk90hXw/w-d-xo.html KD Lang singing "Hallelujah" at the 2010 Toronto Olympics! Outstanding!!
Love this version, but I love her performance at the Olympic opening ceremonies more.
Not sure why you think KD Lang is a country singer. She sings whatever suits her. Check out her "Ingenue" album
She started as a country singer and wore a cowgirl outfit with fringe. Patsy was influenced by Patsy Cline.
Oops, I meant k.d. was influenced by Patsy Cline.
@@sandramoore I saw her first Grammy performance. She was dressed as a man in an over-the-top western suit and pounded the ground while singing about domestic violence. It was a gender-bending performance meant to poke fun, not a genre-defining one. Gender bending is still not typical for country music. A few years later she released "Ingenue". Definitely not country. Singing Leonard Cohen doesn't even come close to defining her as country. She's k.d. a talented vocalist who can sing anything.
I guess I didn't see that one. Haven't followed her career that much. But when she and Roy Orbison sang Crying together, music doesn't get any better.@@bubsmomma
Her early albums are definitely country
Wish she'd tour so I could see her...❤
Hey Old Man Whitey,
RECOMMENDATION…
You should see K.D.’s performance of “Hallelujah” at the 2010 Olympics, it’s UNFORGETTABLE. (The video is on the official Olympics channel.)
'her' beauty......'her' beauty....KD is singing the queerness of the availability of how Cohen presents his own verse and how all great poetry becomes human experience....verse... and I love you.
K D Lang is the best.
KD Lang is the only singer that truly gives me spine chills every time I listen to her singing this. For another group to check out, try The Dead South. From SK, they do updated bluegrass. Start out with In Hell I'll Be in Good Company, You Are My Sunshine or Black Lung (Our Vinyl version). That first song has 400 M views and 2.7 M likes. Also for a twist, check out Tommy Johansson - just released a cover of Take Me Home Country Road, but he's a metal singer and spices it up a bit. Cheers!
Can you please react to her live version of this song at the olympics… she could have lip singed but refused and said she would sing live… it is also incredibly moving… I saw her perform live a few times and she is the best singer of a whole generation… nothing touched her vocal command …special
This is the 2005 Juno award in Winnepeg performance not the 2008 one which was Cohen was in the front row at that performance.
Agree, 100%!!
No! It doesn’t get any better.
Well, she isn’t a country singer. She is a brilliant singer.
I like the Canandian. Tenors much better, I guess it's because I have been hearing it from them for years.
Amen
SUSANNA relates to this Version of Hallelujah also re: L.C.'s best friend's wife's kindness and friendship.
Apparently he wrote 76 verses and chose which ones to use at each performance. I could be wrong.
Only in canada could i win best male vocalist....
Brandi Carlile does an amazing version as well
