Pretty much anytime kd Lang performs it’s a masterpiece. Everyone who falls all over pentatonix’s version needs to listen to kd’s version. It’s far superior.

So true. I don't know of anyone who has matched or surpassed kd's voice. It is amazing to watch and listen to her.

After hearing KD Lang perform that song [Hallelujah] at the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2006 we [Leonard Cohen & I] looked at each other and said, “Well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It’s really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection.”

I love Pentatonix' cover, especially Mitch's part, but kd really has the best version ❤🌈

To me, she's the best female vocalist I've ever heard. Her range and control are phenomenal. For me, a song is about the story and the emotion...and she conveys that in spades :)

I'm right there with you. 😍 when I hear her interpretations.
I just discovered another singer (who has been around for a long time but I'm always a couple of decades late and a dollar short. 😃) named Lara Fabian. As a fellow fan of the amazing vocal technique+performance/interpretative skills of kd, you've got to check out Lara Fabian's Je Suis Marlade. It's. . . I was gobsmacked. I will dig up a link -->

Then check out her Adagio from the same concert. And then her Caruso with English subtitles. From your comment, I KNOW you'll love this singer/performances.) Cheers, and Happy Holidays!

Fearherstep, Lara Fabian sings with such passion. I really like her too. But our kd is so unique.

Her singing this at the Olympic opening ceremonies was the greatest of all time. Perhaps you could do a video on that version.

My thoughts exactly. Dr. Marc needs to read about kd and watch her videos from early days til today. There is not but one kd. No other voice in the world like hers. There is no way to critique kd.....she just is.

She sang that live and one could hear a pin drop in BC Place, not bad at all. I prefer her singing this in a small intimate venue. I agree with Cohen that it has been vastly over used and few seem to listen to the words so I cringe when small kids sing it. She adapts her voice and delivery to the people she does duets with. She has the pipes and control and is a treasure.

It's a great version but nothing will ever top Jeff Buckley's version for me, you should also check out Jonathan Antoine's version.

Mr. Leonard Cohen suggested to the Canadian Olympic Committee that KD Lang should sing his song at those ceremonies. They wanted him to perform it, but he wanted KD. Mr. Cohen got what he wanted 🇨🇦

“…a little bit strained and stressed, like singing to a child…” “I’m not saying it’s good or bad”.
I’ll save you some time, its perfection. If you don’t agree, look for Leonard Cohen's comments of her interpretation of his masterpiece.
Critique is good for all to learn but some performances are beyond critique. You didn’t manage to instruct here, perhaps choose performances that could benefit from your knowledge, which I’ve seen in other videos of yours that are spot on. Sorry, just a little critique of my own.

She really does. She needs no prep time.....just ask her to sing and it's like 1 second and boom kd lets it go!! She did that in the Barbara Walters intetview. I don't think we will ever experience a kd lang voice again!

I love k.d. This is a beautiful performance, as are all of her performances, but my favourite is the original opening of the Olympics in Canada. She is just flawless always ~sigh~ what a perfect voice.

Her performance of this at The Logies (an Australian awards show) is the best. The sound is great and the audience knows enough to STFU until the end when they exploded into a standing ovation.

This was at the 2005 Juno Awds. on TV. She also sang it the next year when the writer Leonard Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters' Hall Of Fame. They hugged afterwards.

I really love what she does at 12:24 with that descending wailing tone. I've been watching some of her live performances last couple day and have noticed she make some interesting changes vocally that seem totally on the fly and like they might not work but she always pulls it off perfectly.

Excellent interesting reaction, tho I could quibble a couple things😏 mostly I disagree with your characterization of hand gestures it seems a very waspy or northern culture myopia (my origins are both those things maybe that’s why I recognize it)
But! I have always used hand gestures when speaking, they add clarity and emphasis, like visually illustrating the spoken/sung text, or almost like adding music to the libretto 😉
But maybe you were describing strictly in reference to stage performance, not daily life …
I also couldn’t quite tell if you’re aware Lang’s favorite genres are torch songs and country: she LOVES the vocal inflections in those traditions, even yodels.
I guess they can be considered flaws - for opera singers…

This is my favorite of KD's performances of this song. It feels "guttier" and yet incredibly beautiful. Is anyone else annoyed by the volume of the piano though? It would be so much better imo if there was less of that, bringing KD's vocals forward. I mean, that's what we all came for, right?
