When Leonard Cohen was asked to perform at the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies in Vancouver, Leonard Cohen basically told organizers “hallelujah” for k.d. lang. He said he liked her vision the best.
she sang Hallelujah in tribute to Leonard Cohen at the Junos and those people in the front giving her a standing ovation are fellow artists appreciating her.
She's incredible !!!His voice breaking gives me chills every time...Such a Beautiful Interpretation... There's a magical moment with her and Roy Orbison singing together "Crying." Thanks
This was for our Juno Awards 🇨🇦the audience is her peers well deserved standing ovation. We are so proud of our girl her voice is second to none. Willie Nelson called her pipes because she has the best in the business.
Love her! An incredibly expressive artist with a perfect warm tone. Fantastic live show. So many songs to recommend!! New rabbit hole coming your way, Rory 😁 (Sorry, not sorry) 😄 Great request and reaction ❤
From the same Juno year that The Hip were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Held in Winnipeg, Neil Young was also supposed to perform but was recovering from the aneurysm so K.D. stepped in and sang a beautiful rendition of 'Helpless'. The addition of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra is outstanding. Love Leonard Cohen!
hope this doesn,t sound too weird but i love watching the expression on your face,it speaks volumes,i love how appreciative you are of the sheer talent that is on show.
BEAUTIFUL SOOOO BEAUTIFUL!! INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE AND AWESOME VOCALS!! CHESTER FROM LINKIN PARK SANG THIS HEARTFELT SONG AT CHRIS CORNELL FUNERAL 😢💔 BEAUTIFUL REACTION RORY 💙 AND THANK YOU NANCY FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL REQUEST 😊 🩷🤘✌️ WONDERFUL STANDING OVATION!! 👏👏👏👏👏
KD is a Vocal Artist not a singer , she interprets and colors her performances to truly bring the song to life. She did a Cole Porter song-So in Love - as a fundraiser for AIDS . I weep every time. Her Miss Chatelaine is amazing. She has another performance of Hallelujah that is also amazing. Lots to explore. ☮️ Harry Loola
Hey Rory! When K.D. Lang first started out here in Canada, she was was kinda a strange person and musician! But she blossomed into this beautiful lady here! Google her early years and see what you think of her roots??!😮😊
Cohen gave us so much, I saw him in Vancouver on hia last tour. He was incredible, putrting on a high powered show at his age. If you would like a dive into some of his sharpest work, I would recommend The Future, and its title number. Hallelujah is probably his most famous and popular tune but not the greatest.
Rory, this is absolutely beautiful! The best version of the song I have ever heard. Thank you for playing this and your reaction to the song. Thanks again!
Her cover of Roy Orbison's Crying on MTV Unplugged!! And her voice is something else early in career doing a country torch song In Care of the Blues live on Johnnie Carson show--very surprising performance.
Leonard Cohen started as a poet in the 1960's he then turned to songwriting. His lyrics are always well thought out. No one else could marry words and thoughts and messages, the way he does. First We Take Manhattan, Suzanne, Birds On A Wire, So Long Maryanne, my favourite - Tower Of Song, and so many more examples of his talent are there to explore. She does this song better than anyone. To me one of the most Canadian moments I have witnessed was when k.d. lang sang this song in 2010. The best female vocalist we have produced singing a song by the best songwriter we have produced ( no insult meant to Neil Young or Gordon Lightfoot or even to Stompin Tom Connors) at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Her songs, Constant Craving, Miss Chatelaine, and Helpless, as well as her cover of Roy Orbison's Crying are all priceless. She's also had memorable collaborations with Tony Bennett, Elton John, and the Killers, to name a few. She came up around the same time as The Tragically Hip, winning the (US) Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Artist in both 1989 and 1993. Constant Craving was a collaboration with Ben Mink (whose name you may recall for his collaboration with Rush on the 1982 track, Losing It). The two of them received co-writing credits for the Rolling Stones' 1997 song, Has Anybody Seen My Baby. Jagger and Richards were allegedly flabbergasted when first informed of the uncanny similarity of their song to Lang's 1992 song. But Jagger later realized that he had unintentionally nicked it because Lang's tune was a favourite of his daughter's, so he had actually heard it often in the background of daily life.
Wonderful heartfelt reaction Rory, thank you! I could see how deeply you were impressed by her amazing voice and performance, she is mesmerizing! I loved how relaxed she was, walking all over the stage, barefoot, and singing her incredible interpretation of this timeless anthem so effortlessly! Wow!
She actually is classically trained, but opted to go into the country genre, with Patsy Cline being a major influence. However, she can sing anything. This has been HER song for many years now. She also does an amazing version of Crying - in her tribute to Roy Orbison.
Her album Ingenué is one of my all time favourites. Smooth as silk and lilting songs. I really have to dive more into her more recent stuff to give it a chance. But then I play Ingenué again whenever I think of her.
Jools Holland said that when kd kang sang this on "Later...", it was the most technically accomplished performance by any artiste he had ever witnessed on his show.
Leonard Cohen wrote about 80 verses to this song. He was in the front row of the audience that night. In 2010 the Olympic Committee approached him wanting him to sing it at the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He was unable but strongly suggested k.d. lang and she accepted.
The Consequences of Falling is another great song to check out from KD Lang. She actually began as a country singer, but was not very well-accepted in that community because of her sexual orientation. She switched to singing this type of music and became a huge success.
Her version at the 2010 Winter Olympics was even better. Can't go wrong with anything kd sings. Please check out her MTV Unplugged, singing Crying. Amazing
If you haven’t heard it you should firstly hear her duet of “ Crying “ with Roy Orbison. He had heard her sing and asked her to sing it as a duet with him. The listening to her singing “ Crying “ after Roy had passed away. She had been asked to perform it at the Memorial Tribute for Roy. Use the k.d. lang sings at the Roy Orbison Tribute version…….she brings the house down.
Hey, that was a cool comparison, KD and Freddy. Never heard that before, yet . . . it is so right. And YES!, This is KD's song. She owns it, like even Leonard couldn't. When she puts her voice to something . . . it rises.
k. d. Lang is so much in control of her voice. She could belt it out anytime she wants, but she doesn't. Also, notice how she sings every single "Hallelujah" differently every time. She's a natural. Thanks for the heartfelt reaction, Rory. Believe me, you're not the only one who gets all chocked up hearing this. I've heard it several times and I get goosebumps every time. Oh, btw, have a "Harry Lula" of a good day! 🙂
Totally agree with your assessment and the comparison to FM as well. As an artist, she was actually interpreting the song. It was unique; and she was not trying to be "pretty" or to show off her vocal talent, she was trying to do justice to the depth and the cynicism and pain in that song.
Leonard Cohen wrote some incredible songs and this is a great cover but for me, nothing tops Jeff Buckley’s version on ‘Grace’ and ‘live in Chicago’ 👏🏻
When I first heard this I thought it was the best song I'd ever heard. But then a group called Pentatonix sang it and I fell in love with it all over again. You might want to check it out because they arranged the heck out of it. By the way they are an A' Capella group
While she does an incredible job on this song, my favorite will always be an older Leonard Cohen singing this live. He puts so much emotion into it and he feels ever word, plus his band and back up singers are the absolute best. I love this song and have been listening to it since it first came out back in 1984 when I was already a huge L. Cohen fan. His poetic sense is unparalleled in my opinion, perhaps Bob Dylan can sit in the same place but if you asked Bob I bet he would say Leonard was better. The actual poem that this song was taken from is 80 stanzas. It is said that Cohen actually wrote about 180 stanzas before settling on 80. Most of his poems are at least 10 stanzas.
Great reaction - because I agree 100% 😄 For yourself, listen to her performance of this at the Vancouver Olympics. People debate which is best but I vote Vancouver. Don’t get me wrong, this one’s spectacular, as you said no one deserves that roaring, lengthy ovation more, but I vote Vancouver 😉 Also for yourself: must listen to one of her early albums “Torch and Twang” - she EXPLODED into global acclaim with that one and: the title is her two musical loves ☺️
I agree with you Rory…the best version of this song! I havre always loved this version of this beautiful song. One of my all-time favorites…….Thanks for reacting to this. Great reaction!
This performance is outstanding but for me the one that is truly special is her performing this song for Leonard Cohen the night of his induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. At the end of the performance, she leaves the stage to greet him as he is sitting front centre in the audience. th-cam.com/video/YYiMJ2bC65A/w-d-xo.html
No need for me to compare but, Leonard Cohen’s live version from London is a master at the height of his craft. Musically and spiritually. It’s his song and he shows everyone why.
Wonderful song. Wonderful singer. Wonderful version. There are other videos of KD singing this song and all of them are good: e,g, 2010 - Vancouver Winter Olympics; 2020 - Fire Fight Australia. K D started out very country. She recorded three albums with her band The Reclines then went to Nashville and recorded a solo album "Shadowland" with Patsy Cline's producer Owen Bradley. This album was a lush, 50s-style Nashville production which really showcased her vocals. Her second solo album "Ingenue" was a more cabaret style collection. She has since recorded several albums - solo and collaborative, studio and live. There are 3 versions of Hallelujah Leonard Cohens : I believe he wrote maybe 100 + verses im not sure he knew how to finish it This is one song even Dylan marvels at John Cale : he redefined the song with his cover . He slowed it down and performed it with solo piano on the tribute album Im Your Man Jeff Buckley : the greatest voice of all time Every other version is a nod to the 3 above KD is Awesome Rufus Wainwright another great version ( thats in Shrek not Cale )

Canadian proud of both Leonard Cohen for writing and K.D. Lang for singing this beautiful song.
This is at the Canadian Juno Awards. She earned a standing ovation from her peers~

My favourite version of this song. KD Lang has an amazing voice. Two fellow Canadians KD Lang and Leonsrd Cohen.

Love her.. shes from my province Alberta canada !she is a huge Elvis fan too
Love her! An incredibly expressive artist with a perfect warm tone. Fantastic live show. So many songs to recommend!!

Song and performer...perfection!! k.d. lang's version is the best hands down!
Leonard said after kd Lang sang it it could Noe be put to rest...she was perfect
Keep in mind those who stood up to applause were all singers, composers, and arrangers at the 2005 Canadian Juno awards
