Thanks Palki, however it would have been only fair if you had explicitly articulated the fundamental Shia Sunni difference - Shias believe it is only the prerogative of the Prophet to appoint his successor (who officially coronated Ali as his successor at Ghadeer-e-Khum), while the Sunnis believe it is upto the people to decide who should succeed the Prophet (Abu Bakr was chosen by a group of Muslims at Saquifa)
The Prophet himself never indicated anyone as his heir.Neither did the Prophet say anything to the effect that some people are superior to other people because of their lineage or ancestry.
He said clearly that "the best among you is he who is the most "pious" (conscious of the existence of the Creator and fearing the Creator).

If we dive deeply into it, we will clearly see that Ali (A.S) was a real companion of Muhammad SAW. Ali was one of the commander in all the wars Muhammad SAW had fought. During his (Muhammad SAW), in a speech clearly tells the people of Makkah that whoever believes and accepts me as a leader, Ali AS is their leader too. A lot of other places and events had taken places where a person can clearly says that Ali AS was the only and true companion after Muhammad SAW. Once Islam takes over as 35% population, then history proves that, they both will start slowly fighting and then by the time Islam becomes majority country and no one to fight over, they start fighting between them.
