  • The GameCube Broadband Adapter brought with it the promise that Nintendo's 6th gen console would be a contender in the growing online scene for consoles. Unfortunately, the Broadband Adapter instead became one of the most underutilized add-ons for the GameCube. In this video, I will take you through a retrospective look at the history of the GameCube Broadband Adapter and its remaining uses today!

Very cool video essay! Had no idea there was a Japan-exclusive online Gamecube game that supported 32 players.
PSO on GC is a very special game to me and I vividly remember getting to play it online for a short while. Wishing I held onto my broadband & modem adapters ( my brothers and I had both) and my original PSO disc

I only got to play the GC version through private servers, but I was glad I got to play Blue Burst for a while on official Sega servers!
I had both for a while as well but ended up parting with the Modem Adapter since it was pretty useless.

@@ArchadesGames Ephinea is also a great alternative for playing PSOBB online in 2023!
Funny enough, with the adapters it was actually the opposite for my brother and I. We couldn't get PSO GC to connect with the broadband adapter BUT were able to get it to work with the modem adapter. The big issue with that though was since we were essentially using a dial up connection it meant we would get kicked off every time our house phone would receive a phone call and our mom's friend would constantly call kicking us off all the time during the day 😂

Awesome video! I’ve never played a GameCube before. It was a console I skipped completely somehow. But I just bought one the other day after hearing great things about the console. So when I saw this video pop up for me, I had to watch it. Thanks for sharing a history about this console. I was wondering what those slots were for on the bottom of my GameCube!

Welcome to the Cube! There are sooo many great games for it that you are going to have a blast with. As for ports if you are still cutious, Serial Port 1 is for the Modem/Broadband Adapter. Serial Port 2 never had a consumer use and was removed in later models. It is used now for homebrew storage. And the High Speed Port is for the Gameboy Player.

The real tragedy to me is nintendo picked the worst console to back out of online on. A shame considering they were one of the first to do online with the nes ans snes. Yet the GC backed out when it really gained gamer insight.
Could you emagine if mkdd, mario party, or any other nintendo games had it? Such a missed opportunity

I didn't think nintendont had that functionality, and I thought emulating it was a PITA 😅 good to know that's not true! Thanks for the informative video!
I wish there was an easier way to enjoy the DS online functionalities nowadays, with WEP encryption for physical consoles and only MelonDS actually working on netplay for local multiplayer games, which often had most of the functionalities...
