    UPDATE: Extrems has notified me that no configuration of Swiss is required to get the ETH2GC to work. Once you update to the latest version of Swiss, the ETH2GC is ready to go, just plug and play! If you enable Broadband Adapter Emulation by default, it will disable memory card emulation for all games.

    • @FyreWulff
      @FyreWulff 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No problem. The short version is for rollback you need to store copies of the match state in RAM. So every frame, the game is saving a snapshot of the RAM values used by the match. These snapshots are what is actually "rolled back" to when it needs to go back to a known good frame if it guesses wrong. This gets more complex the more variables there are in the match, and Melee is complex due to the fact that it has to track items, stage animations, etc. Modern games can account for this RAM usage, but on GameCube Melee is using pretty much all the RAM. So there's not enough space to put those previous frames to roll back to. Slippi can do it because you have to run it on a PC, and since the GameCube only had 24MB of RAM there's plenty of spare RAM on modern PCs to brute force saving frames to roll back to.

    Yeah, THE big con for me is that this uses Serial Port 2. Some people have DOL-001s that lack Serial Port 2, and DOL-101s pretty much all lack it completely. Meanwhile my SP1 is completely empty and unused, and I have no reason to put an M.2 Loader in there as I have a GC Loader HW2. I'd love a broadband adapter replacement that goes in SP1.
    I LOVE the concept of expanding GameCube with online support patches though. I could just imagine a sophisticated online matchmaking feature being added to Mario Kart: DD that matches MK Wii's (as opposed to direct connection), for example. Nintendont on the Wii is also capable of emulating the Broadband Adapter support using Wi-Fi, so the overall accessibility of GameCube Online should improve with time.

    The cons are that both versions take up space on the *side* of the Gamecube (would be nice to have it on the back).
    Also that it takes up the SP2 slot so you can’t have an SD card there. But I absolutely LOVE that this is a thing. I have BBA’s for all my Gamecubes and I’ve been missing online support in the homebrew scene. Hoping this will spark a flame on that front😄

    Personally, what I would like to see in the near future is video game devs creating their own Gamecube dev kit, so this way they can make more indie/homebrew video games on the gamecube, much like the homebrew scene making fan games on 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation consoles (Atari VCS/2600 has some games from the homebrew scene that have been released on the actual console long after the Atari VCS console's been discontinued since 1988/1990.) That's what I would love to see someday without having to use Swiss and go through the headache of hardware modifying my consoles, which I don't have spare ones should something horrible happened.

    This is fantastic, but I don't understand why they made this for serial port 2 and not the otherwise unused port the official broadband adapter uses. Is it not possible to access that port via Swiss or something? I would get one of these but my setup revolves around loading games via serial port 2, and I don't want to use a memory card adapter when I don't need to. There's so much to like here otherwise - pointing the cable backwards rather than sideways out of the Gamecube is genius, for example. I just wish it used the broadband port...

This was in the middle of the PS3/360 era when everyone was pretty much done with the previous generation and focusing on the current Gen, you know that period in all console life spans where most of them end up in landfills and yard sales. Now I'll have to consider selling them quickly in case the price comes down... unless I keep them an call it a day.
