As a lifelong bon jovi fan who’s seen him numerous times in concert it’s actually sad & heartbreaking to see him like this, he looks like he has some real issues health wise no way somebody can decline so rapidly over such a short period of time, either he’s had a stroke or problems with his lungs the dude is struggling just to breathe & keep pace with the song.

As a singer in a rock band myself, this to me looks like what happens when you’re 3/4 of the way through a big long set and your voice is so fatigued it literally cannot physically hit the note, or even a fifth below it. But the show doesn’t stop, the band keeps playing, and you gotta push out something. And what usually comes out sounds a lot like this. It’s a horrible feeling.
I’m a young man singing in similar styles/keys to JBJ, and it happens to me when my voice is spent. I can’t imagine what it must be like trying to push out those notes at 60 which are all in horrendously high keys.
    I feel sorry for Jon.
I think his two options are 1. Have a long rest and see some pro vocal coaches to help him rehabilitate his voice so he can come back and at least finish a set. 2. Call it a career and retire honourably.

Absolutely. I sing for a living and we are human beings not machines. 3 to 4 shows in a week and I'm starting to feel it. Especially if my ears aren't dialed in. If I can't hear properly I definitely wear down quicker as I tend to push myself more to hear. I'm sure John has great sound engineers and a opportunity for sound check every time, but I agree with what was said about years of him singing in high keys. You see this with many artists over the years as they get older. Your voice changes, your ears get shot, could be many things. No denying though in this mans prime he could sing his butt off. Might have to have a really good vocal day in order to pull that off now. Nothing last forever

I believe he has lost his hearing also. It is really sad to see him this way. My heart goes out to him. When I was young and growing up with all those bands Guns N Roses was my favorite. I still love them but I've grown to realize Bon Jovi is really my favorite. True legends. And Richie in my opinion is still one of the most underrated guitarist. Without his style and sound Bon Jovi would have never been the same. Jon was always great, the whole band was great. They gave us many years of their lives to always have and remember them by. Another vocal coach analysing Johns voice pointed out his stage setup and how he is surrounded by monitors while the rest of the band uses in ears, and there is a plexiglass to lower the volume of the drums behind him. That’s not really common and he really seems to need to hear something that he can’t hear with loud drums?! It’s really weird. He runs out of breath after inhaling a lot, his pitch is non existing but it doesn’t sound like his vocal folds are out of control but like he can’t figure out the right pitch…and his movement is also kinda odd. My uncle had a stroke and even though he understands everything, he can’t form words himself anymore and instead mumbles nonsense, but apparently thinks he is talking normally…maybe John had a mild stroke and lost the connection to do what he thinks he is doing. No matter what,I hope he stops touring soon and finds joy in being a retired old man who had an awesome life to look back on.

I complain about bands only performing 90 minute sets and having short tours. If I go to a concert I expect at least 2 hours. But maybe that’s the key to longevity. I understand bands that have been around for 40 years can’t perform like they used to.

Jon has made no secret that his wish is to be like Springsteen. A man and his acoustic. I think he has no regard for the catalogue, which explains the awful setlist on this tour. Because of that, I don’t think has put in the work. He sings off melody which only exacerbates his weakness. If he dedicated time to his craft and resolved his issues with the older songs, he could continue to draw crowds. I’ve seen them 6-7 times and will not be giving my money again. Would you support an out of tune guitarist missing 3 strings?Jon’s vocals are fixable; I just don’t think his heart is in it.

I think a lot of it is denial. When all you've done all of your life is sing and perform music you can't face the fact that you're deteriorating. Steve Walsh of Kansas is a great example. He'd been playing music in Bands since he was a teenager and toured with Kansas 300 days a year for 45 years. Steve started having vocal issues in the early 80's , Raspiness mostly but it was off and on. Around 1991 his voice took a dive, constantly raspy and hoarse sounding and it didn't go away and a constant stuffy nose sound, I believe this was caused by Cocaine abuse and excessive drinking(Similar to what happened to Whitney Houston's voice). In the late 90's he became sober and lost the rasp, got his range back but still had the stuffy nose sound, then around 2013 his voice started to have a shaky warbley sound, they lowered the key to most of the songs and he ended up retiring in 2014 after many complaints from fans online about his performances. Paul Stanley of Kiss is having the same issues since about 2018, the warbley voice, although he's taken the route of using vocal tracks instead of singing live

    I’ve been watching, listening to him since I was 9, I’m 40 now…
His These Days album is possibly one of the most underrated vocal albums ever, especially Hearts breaking even, I’ve been to many of his concerts, and up till 2003, they were probably the best live band I’ve ever seen.
But, ever since then, he seems flat in performances, and his voice is horrible, I think he’s lost his hearing…

What people are failing to realize is that Jon has been having vocal problems for some time. This isn't a new issue, it's just gotten worse to the point where more people are finally taking notice. They started tuning down decades ago, which in itself proves he couldn't do certain things vocally anymore. But look at videos from 10 years ago, even then he was struggling. I'd say he started struggling with the higher stuff in the 2010's. People have all these crazy theories, "He's deaf now", "He has neurological problems", etc. Nah, his voice has just degraded. It's sad. Genetics and life choices make a big difference. He was a heavy smoker for most of his life. But it is what it is. I think the heavy touring and smoking did a number, but obviously none of us truly know.

I don't believe it's all down to damage to his voice; some decent vocal coaching and decent feedback into his earpiece to enable him to pitch correctly against the band... Damn; so many people use autotune these days; if he wasn't able to even pitch correctly any more, even with many of the songs tuned down by at least a whole tone, surely he'd use autotune to correct his live vocal... credit to him that he doesn't... some serious vocal coaching and a good mix into his earpiece, along with tuning down the songs with those impossibly high notes he is so famous for in his prime and I think he still has the chops. I just hope he doesn't have an ego problem that is stopping him from getting the coaching he needs (I was classically trained in my youth, and KNOW that unless he's gone tone deaf, he could still sing in pitch even if he can't hit those mega high notes any more (in my humble opinion)

@@MrHendo747 Well how do you explain him sounding perfect before they used in-ear monitors? Shouldn't make much different now unless it's a vocal problem (which it is). As for autotune, it's definitely used on the studio albums, but definitely not live, which I appreciate. But the thing is, yeah a vocal coach could help, but only to a certain extent in Jon's case. I feel like his voice is too far gone now. It makes me sad, it really does. But the truth of the matter is, a lot of vocal damage can't be fully corrected. It can be bettered. I hope that's that case for Jon. Love him. Hate to see him go through this.

If there's ever a chance for me to watch them live today, I would go. 100 percent. No matter how bad he'd sing or how much the ticket would cost. He's been singing amazingly for 40 something years of my life He's allowed to sing off-tune now when he's old and tired. I would sing along happily with my also off-tune voice.

Let me explain the problem Jon is having ,I have been down that road myself and know that problem inside out .
When we sing we blend our head voice with our chest voice ,we need to two voices to overlap and shade to give us that sweet sound .
To keep head voice from leaving us we need to sing lighter as we go up our range and that will keep us in our mix.
What Jon has done is he has sung hard for many years ,his head voice has left him so he is only left with chest voice, this is very common for hard rock singers.
He can get it back with the right therapy but not doing what he is doing ,the road he is on is not good and will leave to depression and frustration and that will also make his singing voice go down hill.
It took me 5 years to get my voice back ,it was my living and it was heart breaking but so happy now to have it return.
Jon really is living on a prayer so let’s all pray for him
    Love and peace guys

Jon's voice is shot stemming from the Slippery When Wet then the New Jersey tours. You cannot go on successive 16 month world tours and not tear up your voice. I really don't think he ever recovered 100% from those tours.

I'm the same age as Jon and have continually worked 4-5 nights a week. Same as Jon, without the months off in between tours. I still sing everything in the key is written, and I have severe emphysema. It's very easy for me to tell that Jon is almost totally deaf. His pitch in the past is awesome. He just can't hear it. His band is embarrassed for him, and themselves.

    • @Barry7777777

As a crappy singer myself who has used all the same tricks to get through the night - cutting notes short, substituting low notes for the high ones, letting the audience take over during high passages - and even the "surprise" high note to cover the fact that I'm otherwise struggling, I have to say that Jon's issue is much more a vocal problem than a hearing problem. He generally keeps a consistent tonal center throughout the night so his hearing should be okay. Of course I'm not mentioning that he seems to lose his tonal center for entire phrases at times. A crappy singer like me has to constantly adjust his technique as his voice wears; now even a formerly great singer like Jon is squeaking out "mouse" tones to avoid the pain of including the low mids.
He's the kind of singer we now tolerate out of love and appreciation, people should let the poor guy make some retirement money and feel like he's exiting the biz as a hero - he deserves that.

    • @andrewlawlor7678
      @andrewlawlor7678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think that there are two types of deafness for a singer. Internal and External. I’ve seen a few older singers who still have their usual external hearing but they lose the pitch because they can’t hear themselves internally. You can play them a pitch then ask them to sing it and they are invariably flat where 5 years ago they’d be right on the money. Usually happens way later than 60 though.

Whilst they're totally different in terms of vocal style, Brian Johnson of AC/DC had to quit touring a few years back due to hearing damage. They'd been tuning down for a while also but even with that, he still struggled with pitch and I believe didn't want to risk what was left of his hearing by having monitors at stupid volumes.
I believe though that he worked with some in ear specialists who were able to get the tech tweaked so that he got all the right frequencies that would allow him to sing in key but without risking further hearing damage.
Whilst I do think Jon may indeed have other vocal issues that require attention (whether medical or a good coach), being able to at least hear everything clearly might help him a bit too.

Age certainly has something to do with it, but there is more to it than that. Tom Kiefer (Cinderella) sounds brilliant these days (saw Cinderella on the Long Cold Winter Tour (1989). He is the legendary Australian rocker who has suffered a life scarred by drug addiction and alcoholism.27 May 2019
""I had been told I would need to keep my distance from drinkers for a little while. That's what they told me at AA as well. If the people you hang around with drink or take drugs, change the people you hang around with or you will relapse so quickly you won't even see it coming"
For those who deny the existence of miracles, how do you account for the fact that Jimmy Barnes is still with us? Still creating. Still forcing promoters to switch to bigger venues. Still showing singers a third of his age what work ethic is all about. If the loss was sudden. Processing that. Accepting that a vital piece of yourself is gone / a bedrock of your identity is not coming back. Would be neither quick, nor easy. Jon has always used his fame, & money to help others. Until he opened up restaurants for the homeless in the last decade. He was not public. About any of his charitable works. Someone seeking / needing adulation. Would have been. I think he is a merely a human being. struggling / not ready to accept. This reality. I haven't acted in a decade. Back then, he was singing for next week - not tonight. Now he's singing for his life. If I were to guess, he booked this tour for his band and crew - this is their livelihood. They need to work (maybe not Tico, Hugh, and David). And after they sell out stadiums, they have to play. Unfortunately, I don't think he will recover. It's taken several years to get to this point. He's too young for this to be natural deterioration. Even his smoking wouldn't affect it this badly (unless the smoking contributed to esophageal cancer or something like that and it's been a secret). Thanks for a great video. As a musician, I think there are a couple of things going on. First, it appears that Jon has lost the elasticity of his vocal cords, which is why he seems very tense when singing. Also, I think he might have some hearing loss too, because his phrasing and timing is off. If it was just a vocal cord problem, his timing would still be good. He and the band need to have a serious discussion as to how to move forward. He's still a young guy that could perform for years to come if his voice and hearing are healthy. There are other older vocalists out there performing at a high level. Engelbert Humperdinck is still performing to this day and sounds great.

Is it just me or do Tico and David look rather concerned when you see there faces close up? It’s like, damn, this is taking the magic out of the music. They would know what’s really going on of course. I think his singing voice is just to far gone for whatever reason. It could also be a hearing problem combined with some sort of health condition. He seems fine when you hear him talking. Not sure if you’ve made a Paul McCartney reaction video but he can’t sing his stuff anymore either, although he is almost 80 and still technically sounds better than Jon. And to be fair, Paul was singing great even in his early seventies. This is quite sad actually.

It does puzzle me that someone like JBJ could sing out of key, after so many years of nailing it. As a singer myself, I know immediately when I'm flat or sharp, but JBJ seems to now have no clue that he's way off. It's almost like he can't hear properly. You can't even tell by his expressions that he knows something's wrong, usually you'd have a hard time hiding the struggle. He's a fantastic musician and has an unbelievable catalog and legacy... so this is so surprising. I really hope he gets some professional help with his voice, he's got a lot of years left to give.

I feel so bad for him since he's lost his gift to the world. I've read that when he first started having problems he started that whispering technique and that may have been well over 10 years ago now and the problem is worse. I'm familiar with the Bon Jovi songs from a musical standpoint and had my keyboard nearby. The actual tune aside, his voice seems to be only able to deliver something around middle C or b flat. Hitting f3 is hit or miss and the wheels come off at g3. This is a major disaster as his instrument unable to provide the melody of the songs. It's apparent that any further singing will damage his voice further. Please for the love of god someone cancel this tour and get this legend the help he needs.

The way he finished the 2nd verse and was smiling ear to ear makes me think something else is going on here. It's as if he doesn't realize how incapable he is at performing. It's time someone tells him and he faces the reality of the situation. It almost sounds as he's lost his hearing because everything is off including the phrasing.

  • @ADAMnotJASON

Could it be a hearing issue? He seems to not have a blown voice persay. Also interestingly enough He’s used in ear monitors since 1992-93. This tour he didn’t. He was surrounded by wedges like Ozzy. (Which is weird. if it is a hearing issue you’d think the IEM’s would be better…)

Totally. Tom Keifer studied with the great Ron Anderson, and totally repaired his damage. Tom was in worse condition than even Jon here. Coincidentally, Richie studied with Ron for many years and still sings great. Ron passed away this winter, but Jon needs to take the same route and study with Ron’s protege. Peter, this….hurts me. I’m 50 now, and grew up on Bon Jovi. Slippery When Wet came out a month before my 15th birthday. Jon is not only a legend, he’s one of the nicest, most generous guys in rock, or in popular music, for that matter.
First thing, the vocalist for Cinderella you referred to is Tom Keifer. He’s a little over a year older than Jon, and if you think about songs like Nobody’s Fool from their first album, Night Songs, Keifer has a very distinct vocal style, very gravely, for lack of a better term (you could describe it far better than I could), similar to that of “Dizzy” Dean Davidson of Britny Fox. That style was somewhat prevalent in the mid to late 80s. Think of “Girlschool” . I would imagine that style has to be hell on the vocal chords, so if he was able to undergo the procedure and exercises to get his voice back, one would think, and hope, Jon could do the same.
I’m with you. I have to think there is something medically wrong with Jon. This performance sounds to be a full step and a half down. I don’t have perfect pitch, but listening to the studio album cut, and then this live performance, it’s more than a full step drop. Without pulling out my guitar, I can’t be sure if it’s 1.5 or two.
Even if he were singing in a much lower register, which would at least be understandable, he’s completely off key, and he has no vocal elasticity, whatsoever. At times, it sounded as if he were slightly off beat, as well. It’s almost like hems completely off balance, and that would seem to indicate hearing issues, at least that’s my instinct. Possibly vocal and hearing issues, both.
People are always going to go see the band, and they’ll cheer no matter what. Bob Jovi is such an important part of so many of our lives, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for Jon as a performer and a human being. But right now, until Jon resolves whatever is ailing him, they should not be touring.
He sounds defeated, which is more heartbreaking than hearing him off pitch, and lacking the command he once had. I hope somebody close to him has an honest heart to heart. They don’t need the money. That much is sure. Jon needs to take some time for himself. If it were me at a concert, and he’s tuned down multiple steps, I wouldn’t care so much as the harmony and lead vocals were together. Because right now, there’s a really unnerving dissonance happening,
Thank you for remaining positive. I know that this was hard to hear for you.

Keifer though has lied about what damaged his voice, saying that poor technique didn't have anything to do with his strained voice, but rather, he just woke up one day with a "paralysis" of his vocal folds. Ridiculous. Tom's natural speaking voice isn't raspy, so by rasping up his singing voice so much it's inevitable that he would damage his voice.

Videos like these were being made about Paul Stanley starting about ~10 years ago. And everybody knows how much Robert Plant's voice deteriorated from the 1970s onward (not to mention Jimmy Page's guitar playing). Wigs can cover the male pattern baldness, hair dye can hide the gray, and plastic surgery can smooth out the wrinkles. The only way to disguise vocal deterioration is with lip-syncing, and it's usually easy to tell when that's happening. Athletes retire, rock stars fade to black.

Jon recently had Covid and I think he underestimated its lasting effects. We know Bon Jovi did damage to his voice after touring for years during and after Slippery. He has turned to a voice teacher and is religious about his exercises. I saw him last week and it was rough. He had the band drop a note or so it could accommodate his struggles. Jon tries so hard and you could see how upset he was when struggling, he is a perfectionist. I think he had psyched himself up and that didn’t help either. So psychological and perhaps long Covid might answer some of questions. Hopefully he gets some help. The rest of the band were tight as usual, Phil X can sing and is very comfortable with the band. Dave and Tico were on point as usual. It was hard to watch Jon but the stadium was full and no one left, we still had a great time.
