  • Dustin Hoffman getting grilled while drilled. The Nazi dentist does quite a sadistic 'cavity' search on him, causing some seriously insane pain --all for nothing, for he hasn't a clue what they want. Is it safe??
    ...I think not.

    Come on , give Dustin Hoffman some credits too. After all, it's his character we are identifying with. Hoffman is literally quivering like a frightened little boy in the hands of the legendary torturer. Each of his labored breath sends chills down the spine. You cannot overlook the fear in his widening eyes . The pain in his cry is so palpable, we can actually feel his agony. Babe's vulnerability and innocence made the scene more plausible and visceral. At the end, I should say both of them did a tremendous job in bringing out the most of this memorable scene without overdoing it at all.

    What a tremendous scene. Years pass and it has aged without losing brilliance. Olivier looks impeccable as a dentist who meticulously tortures poor Dustin, breaking him more in his preparatory cares than with the act itself. As all dentists!

  • @tmrezzek5728
    @tmrezzek5728 8 ปีที่แล้ว +92

    Nine times...NINE times Olivier says "Is it safe?" and each time it's different, and each time it's more menacing than the last. So, naturally, the piece-of-shit Academy gave the supporting actor Oscar to Jason Robards for 'All The President's Men', and Robards was fine in that. But Olivier MAKES this film; even when his character isn't on screen, you're thinking about him. He's 100% Badass without shouting or waving a gun around--he's calm and insidious (his chuckling, matter-of-fact manner when he says to Hoffman: "Oh, please, don't worry. I'm not going into that cavity again!") and smart (the retractable blade, which he only uses twice.) Absolutely one of the peak roles of Olivier's career, and along with 'The Entertainer' (1960) it proves he could delve into the dark side as well as anyone.

    Just read an old Scarlet Street interview with Marc Lawrence (playing "Erhard") who said while they were shooting the "Is it safe?" scene John Schlesinger kept telling Olivier: "Cut this line. Cut that line. It's taking too long." And Olivier (who was ill anyway) blew sky-high and yelled "John, I believe in the rhythm of speech! If you want to cut lines, then cut them in the GOD-DAMNED EDITING ROOM!!" Schlesinger immediately backed off and shot the scene as written and it stayed in the final cut. Olivier absolutely knew what he was doing with his role.

    • @pjabrony8280

      William Goldman, the screenwriter, also had a story about Olivier's dedication. It was an exchange between Roy Scheider's character and his, and the lines were, "I know that sooner or later you're going to go to the bank." "Perhaps I already have been." On the first two takes, Olivier took a pause before saying his line, and Schlesinger told him not to pause. Olivier said, "I have a problem not taking the pause. I'm trying to get information out of him. When he mentions the bank, it takes me a moment to register it. Bill, would it be all right to change the line? If Roy said, 'I know that you're going to go to the bank sooner or later,' then I could register the word 'bank' while he's still talking and I wouldn't have to take the pause."

    If you take note of the henchman who hold's Hoffman's head so the "White Angel" the Nazi dentist played by Olivier you'll see the actor is Richard Bright who played Michael Corleone's personal bodyguard Al Neri who in the original novel is a former cop who brutally kills a pimp, if memory serves me, by throwing him out of a window. Bright was in a lot of great movies playing a tangential character which was usually a friend or colleague of the protagonist. He play Pacino's brother in "Panic in Needle Park". He was killed at age 68 when the rear tire of a NY city tourist bus ran him over while in a crosswalk with the walk sign on. This was a great movie and what prompted me to come see this scene was the fact that William Goldman who wrote the novel and won two Oscars for the screenplay "Butch Cassidy & the Sun Dance Kid" and as well "All the President's Men" died today of colon cancer at the age of 87. Goldman was a consummate screen writer who penned some of the great lines in dialogue ever written.

    This is The Standard of Scenes of Physical Torture. Set is minimalistic, cinematography is plain and unembellished and actors perform their work with subtlety. Sir Laurence Olivier creates absolutely chilling villain with his faux-friendly and professional manner. It probably is exactly the same manner he would behave while doing dentistry without intention to torture a man.
    Action itself is simple, very effective and any massive props or special effects are not necessary. Actors and editing do everything in this scene.

    Look at the scene at 7;14 - Hoffman's gap in the middle is gone unlike at 6;43. Know why. It is filled in with some kind of material that they can actually drill through to seem like it was his tooth, But the screen test was deemed too violent because many audience members walked out so it got cut. They say that extended scene still exists along with other cut scenes like Doc's 8 minute fight scene.
