All those diamonds....I think each one was worth 90,000$...Hoffman's character should have taken a few to at least cover his upcoming dental bills! (lol)
Probably the most intense scene in the whole movie (with the possible exception of the dentist scene). Essen is "food" in German...and even a tiny little diamond like that, it'd be like swallowing a jagged piece of glass 15 times that size.
better scene in my opinion is the rough chase betwen dustin and his pursuit c.i.a. man when dustin dream and take enrgy by form the hero of marathon i in the past
Essen is the order or command or imperative to eat or the substantive for the food to be eaten or the german city of Essen. Here it's the imperative order to eat: Essen !
Love this scene! Yet I still think Dustin Hoffman should have ran down to the end of the stairs and pocketed all the remaining diamonds in the briefcase and split! Why not?! Awesome thriller!
I think he wanted nothing to do with them knowing their history. speaks volume about his character, most would've taken those diamonds. I know I would've.
does anybody notice that dustin hoffman doesnt age like a normal human being? he just is how ever old he needs to be for the charachter. he was almost forty when he made this movie, but he looks like a baby. and that is a small part of what makes Oliviers performance as creepy as it is. Becaus Babe is soooo vulnerable seeming.
Anne Bancroft was only six years older than him. They were roughly 30 and 36 when they played lovers who were supposed to be separated by a generation. But with that baby face of his, he was pretty convincing as a 20-year-old, and Anne was kind of made up to be credible as a woman in her 40s, so...it worked.
This scene is crazy how he kicks the worker out.... Worker: hey what are you guys doing here? Babe: oh we'll just be a little while. Worker: There's no one allowed in here. Babe: Ok, well just get out....GET OUT!!! NOW!!!!!!!! ........ HURRY UP!!!!!!!
4:23-4:24 All that money...wasted Unbelievable 90000 PER diamond...wow Suitcase was FULL TO THE MAX with diamonds He threw those diamonds at him as if to say"screw you"
Is it really really bad if I was a bit like : "How dare you throwing diamonds at Laurence Olivier. Plus he was sick!" Then I thought "Ok he deserved it" but still...
Laurence Olivier managed to make me feel sorry for Szell. There's a reason he was the greatest actor of his time. Marlon Brando may have had more talent but Olivier surpassed him through his sheer hard work and passion for acting.
They said Lawrence Olivier was dying of cancer while filming this movie. I saw an interview with Dustin one time. I think he said sometimes he was pleasant And sometimes he was a real son of a bitch. One thing's for certain- he was a great actor. Probably one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of our time.
Guess the irony is that the Jewish character is oblivious to the value of the diamonds, while the 'aryan' nazi character is obsessed. Change places, handy dandy, who is the justice & who is the theif?
Rofl... Worker: Hey, what are you guys doing here?? Babe: Oh we'll just be a little while. Worker: there's no one allowed in here. Babe: Ok, well just get out. Worker doesn't budge. Babe: GET OUT....NOW!!!! Worker scurries to opposite door. Babe: HURRY UP!!!! Szell: but there was that man. He saw your gun, he'll come back and bring others.
Those diamonds would have caused Szell internal bleeding, which was why swallowing them was a bad idea. Besides, he could collect those diamonds from the water.
They probably wouldn't cause internal bleeding; instead, they would pass through the colon easily. "...he could collect..." - How the hell could he do that?!
What's interesting is that the villian in this story sticks to the stereotypical image of the villain-as-infirm,whereas the real Nazis were not infirm-they killed the infirm.
Straight out of Hitchcock, as well as the final insult of Szell dying from his own weapon. So artfully done by Schlesinger and I'm sure it made Master Alfred smile.
It's a terrible way to die. But just think of all the evil he committed in his lifetime. This was one sick, disgusting, evil bastard. Yet in all reality, he lived to be pretty old. He managed to elude detection and was able to live a fairly long and comfortable life. This sort of thing happens in real life, too. I always get a kick out of hearing those who believe in a God rationalize and justify this sort of stuff. 😃
Given what the Dustin Hoffman character went through in the movie, diamonds were very unimportant to him.
Hollywood in a different era
you got to hit him in the Greed. That how you hurt him. Easily the best acting duo of my lifetime
Some of the best acting ever.
The mesh floor was a stroke of genius.
"Is it safe?" Certainly not for Szell in this scene!!!.
Hoffman and Olivier are great in this movie!!!.
Devane as well !!
Scheider as well
That stuck in my mind to this day sends chills right to the bone. " is it safe"😰
I love how Hoffman says at the end "Go get them!!"
One of my all time favorite movies.
I agree 👍 💯 back in the day when they made great movies 🎬
I got this in my movie collection.

It not safe. It's very dangerous. Be careful
@@cibo889 Watch the film and you'll understand what @Tullamore Jameson is referring to.
I couldn't accept that each diamond was worth $90,000.
That just seemed totally absurd to me.
These were stolen from Jews in Nazi Germany. I would want no part of them. Money is very unimportant.

Really shook Lawrence's character.
the most silly but the most heartbreaking metaphor of this movie is

"Karma" does not exist. In the real world, many people get away with doing bad things. It's the wishful thinking mentality.
@@johnv339 Then they die and face God's judgment.

If this took place today think of all the security cameras that would be in this location.
What an amazing performance by both men.
6:41 Szell isn't actually dead here.
He's just looking for his diamonds.

In the book, also written by William Goldman, he throws the remaining diamonds in the water and jogs away.
The ending of the book is better. The character of Babe in the book, after his torture and death of his brother, becomes a stone cold killer.
anyone else think they'd come back with scuba gear and pick out the diamonds?
does anybody notice that dustin hoffman doesnt age like a normal human being? he just is how ever old he needs to be for the charachter. he was almost forty when he made this movie, but he looks like a baby. and that is a small part of what makes Oliviers performance as creepy as it is. Dom Altmeier too bad he never had the chance to use them... either that or he might've been a templar... 😉
more brutality is only in "Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia" And I like It.
I was a bit disappointed about all that money going up in smoke. Babe should have alerted the authorities for some reward money.

I like the conversation with Goldman's character.
" Hey..I'm just doing my job. I believe in my country.."

Boxingbear Goldman? His name is Janeway and he’s played by William Devane, who’s Goldman?
Oliviers character couldn't swallow the truth.
Correct medicines for him

Laurence Olivier managed to make me feel sorry for Szell. There's a reason he was the greatest actor of his time. Marlon Brando may have had more talent but Olivier surpassed him through his sheer hard work and passion for acting.

A scene I will never forget,
It drives me mad him not picking up the remaining diamonds tho, I mean they would have set him up for life.
They were diamonds extorted from tortured and murdered Jews. They're not exactly a thing a young Jewish man would want to profit from.
Those diamonds would have caused Szell internal bleeding, which was why swallowing them was a bad idea. Besides, he could collect those diamonds from the water.
