Seeing Hey Jay! React to his old video and him critiquing/cringing at the video is funny and great lol. It feels so relatable to how probably most of us feel after thinking to how some of us used to be before MH was an amazing series in our lives as it is now. It always makes me happy that we all got eventually introduced to such an amazing capcom series and still love it to this day.

I honestly think the early missions in older monster hunters while feeling tedious, were helpful to understanding the game. Like having the player craft their first potion and mega potion and have you use it was much better than just giving you all the items to start, also having to carve monster parts and deliver them and stuff helps to stress the importance of carving, and the egg missions and other slower missions like collecting bugs and such help to familiarize players to the maps… I think something they need to do is to force the player to equip items and stuff to their wheels on their own instead of starting with a preset wheel, this would go a long way to helping players become familiar with the items

The red arrow still exist, i use it because i turned my map into the smaller detailed map and turned off monster icons so I could be surprised more often when a random monster shows up, but I also still get lost on maps like the lava caverns and the citadel. If I didn't have that I'd basically be running around more lost than ever every time the monster moved zones

    • @Stratelier
      @Stratelier 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I can relate. Some of my UI customizations:
      - Removed the monster status indicators beneath the monster icons
      - Set the corner map to "Detailed" and disabled the toggle (I can only view the full map via start menu)

I remember getting into the Monster Hunter franchise via the MHTri gameplay on the Wii's Nintendo Channel back in the day.
It just looked so cool to me, and it somehow instantly clicked when I actually started playing it. I got so immersed into the world, the monsters, the music, the characters, the online... Putting in hundreds of hours during the golden age of the Wii alongside Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros Brawl was one of my best gaming experiences ever.

  • @lionmaindgaming1027
    @lionmaindgaming1027 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I dont think your original criticism was wrong, actually i got to your channel due to that video, it was such an honest and no salty at alll opinion (wich is kinda hard to find xD) its just a POV of someone that donsent know/play that game in particular, most of your feed back is valid due to that same issue, you where speaking as someone new to the franchise, with no background on how to play it, therefore all your coments could be feedback for capcom to improve the game for newcomers.
But look at you now, a full fledged fashion hunter :,)

This was very fun seeing you react to what got you here in the first place. I think it would be fun seeing your reactions to some of your early monster hunter related playthroughs, it is always good to look back and cringe a tiny bit at our past. (Like for example when I first started playing monster hunter in 3U, I didn't even acknowledge that the B button let me roll until my first brachydios)

  • @conspiracypanda1200

The great thing about the old review is that, though there were many misinterpretations and misunderstandings of the game itself, it's _polite._ At no point did you say "Argh! This game sucks! Clearly I am being screwed over and this game is stupid and made by idiots and loved by morons!!"
No, past you had _respect._ You said "I can feel what this is going for, I can see the intention; unfortunately, this isn't for me." And when so many others are happy to go with their gut reaction and just say "I hate this thing therefore it is bad", that reaction downright commendable.
In the end I'm glad you gave us a chance, but even I'll admit that the community's reaction to you would have been a lot more on the hostile side if your review had been hostile to begin with. Thankfully, we aren't in that timeline.

My son got me into MH with Generations. I tried MH1 back when it came out and was lost. We would play together religiously on the 3ds with the local network. If it wasn't for him idk if World would have been so enticing to me. Probably wouldn't have given it a 2nd thought but idk.

This gives me memories of 3 where I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or what was going on. Was also funny going into World/Rise and being like "Wow weapons are so much faster now!" But to new people they can definitely feel slow and clunky, especially if you have no idea how to use the weapon. I still don't know how to use most of the weapons in Monster Hunter. I just like Insect Glaive, Bowgun, Hunting Horn, and Dual Blades. Would love to learn Greatsword, Hammer, Switch Axe, and Charge Blade, but ho boy. Gotta be in a specific mood to learn the latter two.

Monster Hunter is a game that feels very awkward if you use the true-lock camera lock were it automatically tracks the monsters. The push to re-center style works so much better.

i was there 2 years ago
it was really entartaining, i've been trough the exact same thought process as you, slowly moving from "man this shit is clunky af" to "omg this is my favorite game ever" is such an amazing journey we all somehow did
i also got a good laugh from that video, given that, as you saw yourself over this two years, rise is the closest we got so far to devil may cry levels of speed and mobility, but no offense, really, "clunky" is a so accurate first impression that i'm actually more surprised when this reaction does not happen
and the game does (no it doesn't) the worst job ever in teaching new players, i completely agree on that part of your criticisms and i will die on this hill with you (as probably all players will do honestly)
overall, glad you have been converted to this wonderful game

I still remember picking up MH4U for the first time. I'd seen the review scores, knew the series was well acclaimed, and in fact I picked it up alongside Square-Enix's own attempt at the same formula (Final Fantasy Explorers). Alternating between the two side by side, I didn't necessarily "get" the appeal of MH4U at the time, but could definitely feel there was _something_ worthwhile in MH4U. Not sure if it was the creature designs, Palico system, or overall level of polish -- but it was just enough to maintain interest as I kept digging through early game quests. I don't know at what point I actually found "it", I only remember Gore Magala was a righteous wall (just like your first Diablos in MH World) and several rage quits were had before I finally smashed through that wall. From there? The rest was history. (Shagaru Magala? Two carts, but first try. Highrank story? Rose to that challenge like a champ. Daladamur? Two tries. G-rank? I could take it -- and did. Gogmazios? Many attempts were made but the winning run was legendary.)
Also, unlike your MH journey I had NO ONE to "mentor me while playing MH4U for the first time. Just myself and the game itself, nothing else.

MHR is my first MH game and I only got into it because some friends (veterans of other MonHun games) were talking about playing. I ended up getting the demo and played with my sons and that was okay, but my friends said there was much more to it than what was in the demo, so I preordered.
When it came time to play online with my MH-veteran friends I remember having similar criticisms with the biggest being how many menus there were and how certain buttons changed function (contextually); the controls were just so confusing. The second issue was how many plates it seemed one had to keep spinning (e.g. Meocenaries, Argosy, find Buddies, Lottery), it seemed daunting.
If it wasn't for having seasoned friends of the franchise to guide me I don't think I would have had the patience to stick with it. I eventually picked up the cadence of gameplay, both in and out of quests but I think the most important thing I realized about the game was that the essential part of gameplay (and fun) for MH was learning the move sets of the monsters and applying my chosen weapon's capabilities to adapt to their actions. If ever I encounter someone new to the franchise that is interested in playing then that is the first thing I would say to describe what the game is about.
Edit: I think I forgot this truth by the time Sunbreak released because the new monsters seemed impossible and I became unreasonably frustrated. It took me much longer than it should have to realize that part of the fun was learning the new move sets of monsters; I'm looking at you Garangolm.

This video, your journey, it feels so relateable to me.
I've been playing MH for 15 years now. I started to meet the game when i was 15, monster hunter freedom in PSP was my 1st game.
I can say as someone that have been playing monster hunter for a long time, SADLY monster hunter franchise is not THAT fun when you don't know what the hell is this or that.
I remember quitting MH in PSP back in 2007, because i keep getting my ass kicked by kut-ku, back then, even hunting a velocidrome it's like a hell for me.
Understandably, i hate the game, i gave up. But then, there's this 1 friend, who become my best friend even now, he actually teach me the principle of monster hunting, how to do this, and that, etc etc, and keep encouraging me to try the game again, again, and again.
After 2 months of listening his banter, on how i should try the game again everytime we have a conversation, i finally gave up ,and decide to give the game 1 more chance.
This time i really take my friend advices and really trying to learn the game, to read monster movement, remembering the weapon moveset, think and strategize with what the game provides, and holy shit, i actually manage to slay the kut-ku, then gypceros, then rathian, then rathalos, then on, then on.
now, im 30 years old, and i've been a fans since.

One of the best aspects of Monster Hunter is that the community is so supportive.
I think it's a fair criticism of MH to say that it's really unintuitive for new players, but that's almost part of the charm. There are so many systems between how to use all the different weapons, radial menus, item menus, gimmicks (wirebugs, etc), food buffs, items, item farms, etc. that any holistic tutorial would be overwhelming and unwieldly. However, the game has such a well-designed feedback loop that every little bit you learn has a measurable impact on your gameplay.
No game is without its flaws, but I feel like with MH the complaints a new player will have are almost always a skill/knowledge issue. The real 'problems' with the game don't really reveal themselves until you're more proficient in the game.

If you do get to revisiting World and Iceborne, maybe you could consider retrying it with the Iceborne Community Edition mod installed or similar? Even without ICE I’ve enjoyed just doing things like turning down the scout flies so I can enjoy the environment more and disabling the clutch claw stagger mechanic for more of the base world combat flow.
I don’t like *every* change from ICE, but by and large it’s great, and really makes doing a full replay (which I think is actually worthwhile, things I didn’t notice or didn’t remember in the story first time around made me appreciate it more, personally) more appealing.

Learning to use the Great Sword with precision and prediction is a rite of passage for players on their road to mastery. You should try and learn it-it changes the way you think about approaching fights, in terms of learning movesets, assessing opportunities, and sniping weak spots, and it carries over to other weapons.

It feels like to me a good chunk of people got into MH with the help of a Veteran/Veterans. I wonder how much of the community are self taught, those who braved the information overload of an MH game tutorial alone and sticked with it until they got it in their noggin. I, for, one is a self taugh fiver. I did meet a Veteran at first but the person discouraged me to play MH when I was a beginner as I was not using meta sets. Sucks to be him.

I see this from alot of people that started as nintendo critics. Its like they become so used to a very strict idea of design philosophy but there are so many games with some tedium, harshness, unforgiveness or slowness that get labeled as.problems or bad design when that often isnt the case and helps the product reach new highs! Glad you ended up being able to enjoy monster hunter. Hope its true for other games!

The red arrow is activated by default in the demo while in the full game it's turned off by default.

"You dont just throw them in the deep-end". Ah of course, modern MH player speak. There was absolutely no hand holding before. I understand new hunters need more than speech boxes. Someone who played the psp MHFU, I know that the beauty of MH is learning how to hunt to yourself and I think less technical and more practical tutorials would be beneficial

This feels like me talking to myself in the past. lol
I have exactly the same experience, just that my first experience with it is with MHW. I tried it, hate it, then refund it.
Then I bought Switch, which came with rise's physical game for bonus, and then "Hey, Might tried this again a little bit" but this time I'm hooked! then only after village 4 I switch back to MHW then I play it for 800 hrs in just what, 3-4 months? It's the best gaming experience I've ever had.
Then returns to switch, eagerly waiting for sunbreak, and I am there on the launch day.

I don't want them to remove the dogs, but I wouldn't mind if they get nerfed, like if they either did less damage, you can only bring 1 buddy, or if you can't sharpen on the dog. I think that's a decent compromise. I liked when the raider ride was added to MHW, but "calling an Uber" was limited, too only like once or twice a hunt and it got scared away by the large monster.
Some of the monsters are slow to ride, so I could see how an early impression could be like that. They definitely vary a lot lol. I had my fun with riding, but sometimes do miss regular mounting.
I think the interesting thing about MH games is that I learn new things all the time, after playing for years and thousands of hours. There's literally just so much info you can't learn from the game's provided info, but the community really helps. I try to get what I can to learn in the game, but as soon as I get a little frustrated if I don't understand something (like a mechanic, how a skill works, etc.), I like to look it up because I've found there are lots of people online who are great at describing these things in ways I understand more easily.

My 1st time discovering and playing monster hunter 1 (mainly because of what use to be known as the beginners quest)'. It had me interested but I didn't liked it and because I didn't own my own console at the time I gave it to a fren who did. After finally getting my own console I remembered "that" game gave it another try and I was hooked from there

This was cool to watch. A lot of your criticisms align with most newcomers including people who would later go on to become lifelong fans.
It's funny how so many newcomers criticise Rise for being sluggish and clunky. I actually think it's too fast. You have too much mobility. I think 4 Ultimate did mobility perfectly. Maybe World. But I think Rise leans a little too far into action-game territory, and I hope the next one gets a little more grounded again.
Honestly, as much as I was sort of disappointed by World when it came out, looking back, I think it's actually the perfect MH game in terms of exploration and mobility, and feeling less arcade-y. The problems with World were a bunch of stuff beyond that. Unfortunately, while Rise fixed some of the issues from World, it also left others unaddressed, and introduced a bunch of new problems as well.
    (Still enjoy Rise though)

    My commentary.
1:30 - TO BE FAIR... it didn't! World did.
3:52 - The dog... is fun. Not going to lie. It is still the most fun method of travel in Rise, too.
4:39 - "Oh no I went in with a GREATSWORD to start off!!!" - Aaah yes... a common mistake. Anyone whose first MH experience is GreatSword or GunLance/Lance is going to have a bad time I think...
7:25 - Honestly I think the Wirebug was way overhyped. As the core feature of the game that's really not a good thing imnsho... The parkour is especially unsatisfying after you've played with it a bit and realized it eats up your stamina like a Chameleos loogie. Enjoy that 1.5 seconds of Naruto wall-running before you have to stop, drop and catch your breath!
7:45 - I always say Wyverns with a "wih" sound like "wish" or "wind"...
8:15 - It's so wild to see how much you've grown into this series!
10:02 - I can agree here. Capcom DEFINITELY does not really know how to set up these newer games to teach players who do not already know how to play Monster Hunter. ... and actually, if I think about it, the one game I hatelove the most is probably the one I'd say does the best job of teaching you, Monster Hunter Freedom 2. It asks you when you first start playing if you're new to Monster Hunter and if you pick yes you are forced to do that big series of tutorial quests that teach you all the basics of the game one quest at a time. I really did walk out of there at least competent enough to get started, so for a game absolutely infamous for horrible hitbox jank and other bullshit, Freedom-2 did alright... Huh! Never thought I'd say that!
12:23 - Honestly I rarely ever use the lock-on feature because I am already so accustomed to moving the camera myself. There is a certain freedom with that. Sure you don't get real-time snappy tracking of the monster but you can take in whatever environmental info you want at an easier to process pace. It's less dizzying for me to be able to control where my head snaps, where, and how fast, is I guess the best way to describe that...
12:58 - Oh yeah, definitely. I felt that way at first when I played bow, I don't remember if critical distance existed back in Freedom-2, but I remember the damage being much less impressive than melee weapons but still wanting to play the Bow because it felt "safer", so I ended up being a Bow main in spite of how small the damage seemed by comparison because I valued not dying more than I valued killing the monster fast. lol
    16:00 - You're welcome, man. You're welcome. lol
16:27 - Yeah you know what? I would be down to watch videos of you commenting on your beginner experiences and how you felt about things. You can tell us the exact moment when it all clicked for you.

I do think you still had some valid points in that original video. Monster Hunter demos have NEVER really done it right in regards to actually teaching a new player.

Pacino voice: "Ooooh, look at the big bawls on this guy!"
Nah, for real, you guys are lucky. Those of us that started before third Gen are rare, but really only in comparison to how big the series is now. I started on PSP with Freedom 1, and taught myself. Research was hard to do to... TH-cam was still new back in 2008, and not many people posted videos. Wikipedia wasn't a trustworthy enough source just yet to spawn the "wiki" title for game resources compiled by fans. So yeah... I spent three whole years only being able to use a GS. And when it's that slow, you learn how to read and predict nearly ANYTHING.
I even started using "the claw" on my own, before I even knew that's what PSP players _did._
If you're iffy about this series, ask for someone to help train you. It can help a ton.
