For good DOS platformers: Commander Keen, Jazz Jackrabbit, Zool 2, lots more. Most DOS platformers had trash controls because it's deceptively hard to code platformer controls from nothing, but there were a number of good ones, too.
It also wasn't until Commander Keen (which started out as a SMB3 port for DOS) that programmers figured out fluid scrolling that didn't destroy your memory.

Out of the shumps the duck one seemed like the better game, though Fox Ranger was a close second by being an okay horizontal shump (If not certainly plain and barebones, golly that first boss) Speaking of Fox Ranger. The sequel was a flophouse of ideas, from being like Star Fox to just regular vertical shoot 'em up fare and who knows what else. Also, i wonder if the "Screaming for vengeance" above the title is a reference to the Judas Priest album, in my mind. It is, but that's a canon. A headcanon! (Nothing beats Tyrian tho) Lars The Wanderer seemed cool, like Leander/Legend of Galahad with RPG elements. Van Slug: X Mission could be alright with better performance, seems like a decent action platformer. I can tell you this though, it's *MILES* better than any of the official Mega Man games for DOS (For god's sake, the second one has edited robot masters in the stage select, look it up. It's a good laugh)
