    My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

    Don’t you just love it when a manufacturer of motorized vehicles mixes metric hardware with imperial hardware?

    • @thatrealba
      @thatrealba 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      EVERYTHING I work on, I try metric and imperial on every fastener because tool manufacturer tolerances aren't so great. So it may be intended to be one thing, but have a better fit with the other. Then you switch tool brands and it flips the other way.

    Dad was a Snapper dealer for many years. Saw this problem more than once. In the old days, Snapper had their own battery that was sealed to prevent this problem. The Snapper battery cost twice as much as a normal battery. Few people bought the Snapper battery when the original battery failed.

It is disconcerting during videos when you watch removal of all the fasteners and then they gloss over the challenging parts as a side note. Whenever battery acid gets where it is not supposed to, I use baking soda to neutralize the acid before I clean it up. I even dust the top of batteries where some acid vaper has come out of the vents on the top of the battery. It keeps the acid from ruining cables. It also makes it safer to handle anything that had acid on it.

    I'm on my second Snapper 28" rear engine rider. It's just like the one in this video. The first one lasted 20 years and the one I have now is about 15 years old. I absolutely love these mowers. I'll have to keep this one going since they've stopped making them again. Easy and inexpensive to work on. I've never had my battery leak like that but I don't leave it in a standing position for more than an hour without removing the battery. I think the manual says 2 hours but I don't won't to chance it. Thanks for posting this video. Always interested in Snapper repair videos.

    There's a BIG FAT STICKER warning you not to leave the mower on end for very long. I have the exact same mower. This is the first video, heck even reference or picture or anything at all, that has shown the Snapper I own. Even then, mine's a 30 inch blade, not a 28. Same motor though.
    Good luck, ever finding any information about the Briggs 12.5 hp engine... GOOD LUCK.

    I've always liked the design of that particular Snapper mower, but never owned one. If Snapper received a lot of reports about this particular tilting/battery issue, they should have put a nice placard, approximately where your eye gaze would be when lifting it, that said, Remove Battery Before Tilting! Placards work really well in aviation and probably wouldn't have added more than $0.25 to the cost of manufacture.

    Is good to have CRC battery acid cleaner around to neutralize the acid. Oh and by the way having a serviceable battery on any mower is asking for trouble. Especially one that tips up to work on.

    There's warnings on the mower to remove battery if it's going to be upright longer than 2 hours. I don't remove mine every time but I work quickly and have a "sealed" battery. So far, so good. 2010 model still going strong.

    When I moved, in 2011, from Seattle to Kentucky and a large lawn, I purchased a used Craftsman 2000, V-Twin Rider mower. I hadn't really done any small engine work but I have an aptitude for it.
    One cylinder on the engine kept bending pushrods, which would then fall out of the rocker arms. I eventually figured out that the valves were stuck and I had to pound them in with a hammer to reduce pressure and then I would straighten the push rod on an anvil with a hammer as well. And that would get me through a half a yard of mowing before I had to do it again. I got pretty proficient at it.
    Then one day I'd searched the internet regarding why the valves would get stuck and it said it may be overheating. Well, I took the shroud off the whole engine and a mouse or bird had built a nest right against the engine and all the fins were coated in a solid cake of mud. I cleaned all that out, and it worked great ever since. I did buy some nice new push rods from Amazon so I was starting fresh.
    That was about 6 years ago and now I have a 60 inch bad boy zero turn and I mow about 9 acres of lawn. Sadly, I'm now paranoid about something building a nest next to my cylinders and actually find myself checking for that every now and then. I have not found anything yet though. I keep it in my shop building when it's not being used, so the risk is probably low. However, I prefer to store it in my barn to give me more room in my shop. But paranoia keeps me from that.

    Is there any reason one would have to use a lead acid battery in an application like that mower? Could you go to something like an AGM where you could tilt it without risk of spills and acid corrosion damage? Just a thought. Great video!👍🏼

    • @JoshSmith-wo7zw
      @JoshSmith-wo7zw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah you could do that. The only thing is I would get a decent trickle charger for AGM batteries and put it on the battery when not in use because the voltage regulator is going to be setup for a wet cell battery. Yes it will still charge it but I think agm batteries need a little more to get them to full 100% charge than what the stock regulator gives you. I think they cut somewhere around 85 to 90% charge on an agm battery. So again a nice battery tender trickle charger designed to charge agm batteries would allow you to get maximum life and longevity out of an AGM battery Expeacially since their more expensive than a simple wet cell. In my opinion it would be worth investing in a good trickle charger for it. So you get as high a return as you possibly can. But they're both Lead Acid batteries with sulfuric acid it's just that an agm battery has the acid absorbed into a sorta fiberglass matting material. Which improves on some of the weaknesses of a regular wet cell battery. It being a magneto style charger on the mower your never going to see voltages get too high or anything like that. They just don't have the capacity to do that. So your voltages will be safe it's just the length of charge is the issue on an agm battery.

    I'm on my daughter's TH-cam account. If you stand a Snapper RER on end you supposedly can leave the battery in place as long as it isn't for more than two hours. Even when I sharpen the blade on mine, it's back down on all four wheels after I remove the blade.
