First I’d like to say wonderful picture! it’s clear you have a true love of the medium and your subject matter. I worked last 12 years mostly in digital with the occasional free hand sketched piece, I have taken up pastels and I will learn them and I know it takes time, we all know we did not take 12 minutes to paint this picture and even at time lapse it seems too fast! What are the color names of those beautiful blue pastels up in the corner of the box that you show as you pan down under the painting? They almost glow. Black fur has always for whatever reason been easier for me than white. And trying to find the right tans or browns for Golden Retriever and other 'brown' animals also is a problem.
Hey! I only saw your comment now for some reason. The blues are Unison Blue Violets I think 8 and 9. Some of their blues are delicious. I too prefer black fur to the other colours. The base is easy and it's how you highlight it. The shadows are the problem in white dogs, much trickier. Brown can also vary so much. Happy pastelling and thanks for commenting :-)
Is it true what some say that you can’t really blend soft pastels on the velour paper in the same way as you can on Canson Mi Tientes Touch or Pastelmat?
Yes that's definitely true, it's not quite the same. On Pastelmat it starts to blend quite a lot as soon as you have some pigment on the paper. Blending on velour is much more subtle and I use thin layers. But this gives me so many opportunities to build up a rich layered colour that doesn't look as flat. The blending options on velour are endless when you experiment on it. Not saying it's better, I need to work more on the other papers to see their full potential. But yes it's different!
Thanx for your reply Emma. Sometimes it’s a toss up of blending vs layering for more depth of colour, although you can layer colours on the Canson Touch as well. And sometimes blending wins as it is inherent quality with soft pastels. Also I have heard that you can’t really erase on Velour, although I am guessing you can cover it up somewhat with other layers on top.
