- In this video I get into some waterfall photography on the stunning Elidir Trail in South Wales, days before a heatwave strikes the UK. Armed with a Nikon D750, a 16-35mm Wide angle and NiSi's True Colour CPL, I explore some new, but noisy, waterfalls. What a beautiful location, one I shall have to return to again for some more cascade action!

Even by your standards, Sgwd Y Pannwr is an exceptional photo. Good job!
Tip:- The best way to prevent filters and step up rings from sticking. is to use graphite to lubricate the threads (I find a Carpenters pencil to be the best but it will work with any HB pencil or softer e.g. B2 is ideal). Just run the pencil "lead" around the threads a couple of times and you're good to go - don't use to much.
Graphite is good, push bike shops sell graphite lubes both dry and wet. Good thing to keep in the tool bag ✌️🌻🇦🇺

Terrific shots Courtney. Love the image of the waterfall in the background with the large tree and ferns in the foreground. Also love the image at 7:20. Your compositions and processing are spot on. Love the soft lighting and feel you gave to these images.
That *is* a really good image. And can be strengthened by losing the far right darkness that weighs it down and doesn't contribute to the image as a whole. Just a thought. I'm always editing. Love her sense of humor : )

The waterfalls in South Wales are incredible, I wished I lived a little closer to them so I could visit more often. I suppose technically it's not really the season for waterfalls but great inspiration for Autumn!

I love your shot at 7:21 , polarizing filter is the best bang for your buck and easiaest for improving landscape or anture photography. After buying my first one a few years ago, I remember how surprise I was to see the difference in some situation for photos with or without polarizing filter. Even when I travel light, I ALWAYS have my polarizing filter in my bag

Brings back some good memories, these waterfalls were practically my back garden growing up! Used to jump off them in the summer holidays from school, spent so much time up there! Great photos!
Wow what a place to live close to! I did see a lot of people swimming in the pools there, if I hadn't any gear with me I'd have probably taken a dip myself ha.

Great piccies, Courtney!! I use those K&F CPL filters, mainly because they're relatively cheap, but they do an OK job with getting rid of glare. Cokin make a pretty good filter as well. I have one of them, as well, but I use it with my ND filters. I only wish the waterfalls around town were flowing, but I have a few more months to wait till we get some decent rain to get them going.

Great photos and good to hear your thoughts on the NISI CPL. I've just (before watching this vid) bought one of NISI's natural cpl filters so hopefully later this week I'll be giving it a test. My regular filters are Kase magnetic but for my new 15mm lens I needed a screw-in one as the lens hood is not removeable.

Looks like a really nice filter. I usually buy one filter that fits my largest lens and then use step up rings to fit to my smaller lenses. The knurled ring is a great feature and one that I wish all manufacturers did. I need to get better about carrying a CPL with me but since I shoot mostly wildlife I am usually more concerned about losing 1 stop of light than I am about reducing glare.
It saves money if you've got a few lenses with different thread sizes, not a bad idea. Absolutely, I guess it depends on what subject you're shooting as to what you've got in your camera bag. Thanks for watching, Jeff!
We can use the gravity acceleration equation to work out a shutter speed for a droplet streak. There are online calculators, but I usually just guess and take a few test shots. If you want 30cm it's "how long does it take to fall 30cm?". I do not like the "chicken soup" effect of a long shutter, but to retain some violence of the fall without freezing motion..

You got some cracking shots Courtney. Hmmm, I didn't know you could get a filter grip to remove filters. I will have to look for one of them to keep in my bag. I have the same issue with my CPL and also with step up rings. Thanks for sharing that tip. Great location as well.

New Sub here. Thank you for sharing your waterfall experience, CPL's are a must have in my opinion for reducing glare for certain shots or locations. Amazing photos. Thank you Robert! I'm not one for regular use of ND Filters but they can be very useful for certain subjects. The rocks around the waterfalls were quite slippy so I think I did well to stay on my feet haha. Hope you're well!
NDs are for when you want to open up the aperture and you can't increase shutter speed. Much more important in videography with a non-changeable shutter speed (e.g., 1/60 sec).

Very nice. I've just started using one of those K&F filter systems where the polarizer is in a little holder with a dial. I find it's much fussier than a straightforward twist filter and really like the silver grippy things.
I've not paid much attention to filter systems in the past as I didn't use them a whole lot, but now my CPL has become a staple in my bag it's interesting to look at different brands designs. The K&F filter sounds interesting!
I visited this trail back in May, it looks like we were standing in a lot of the same spots...amazing place, managed to get some pleasing shots and not too many people in the way ;-)
Good video! I think the knurled knob is a great idea. I'm always unscrewing my polarizing filter by grabbing the wrong ring.

I had to travel 1.5/2 hours to get to this location ha! I absolutely love the area, I visit when I can but my hometown has no waterfalls either, nor am I close to the coast. Sometimes you really crave a water subject though...

You haven’t mentioned image sharpness with and without the filter. I have noticed image degradation using a filter. I haven’t tried NiSi Filters and I’m curious how the images fare using it. Thank you. Very inspiring videos for landscape photography. Wish I were younger to crawl around on the ground like that. lol

Excellent! Waterfalls are my favorite subject and it's refreshing to see someone suggesting a CPL to slow shutter speed instead of an ND which does nothing to reduce glare from the rocks, water, and foliage. What shutter speed are you using when you shoot the waterfall video? When I began posting waterfall videos, a viewer suggested I try shooting with slower shutter speeds to make the water flow look more natural instead of choppy looking when using higher shutter speeds. I did play around some and now ignore the 180 shutter rule and use 1/30th (shooting in 30p) for most of my waterfall and flowing water footage.
Late to your party and, beautifully shot video...question, aside from if one chooses not to have a UV filter, does it make sense to purchase the larger ND filter ...77mm for a 72 mm thread with the step up rings....because of little nuances sometimes noticable at the edges? Thank you in advance and very much enjoyed my first outing with you!
I really like your shots from Sgwd Y Pannwr.. i've been in this are for so many times but I never couldn't find compo from down there.. check out Henrhyd waterfall if you are there again.. it's the biggest one in waterfall country and truly impressive

Looks like a heat location, really lovely images. I love my Kase magnetic filters, so much easier to use not having to fiddle threading them on or cross threading them especially n cold or wet weather!
I cross threaded my hoya filter a number of years ago and it was a bugger to get off ha. Might have to try the magnetic filters sometime too. Would be interesting to compare it to what I've used before. Thanks Paul, was a stunning location. Hoping to return in the Autumn when the trails are a tad quieter.
@@CourtneyVictoria if you do try the jade magnetic make sure you get at least 85mm. That way you can get an adapter ring for anything smaller. I bought the 77mm kit as the 24-120 Nikon lens was my biggest, then switch to Z mount and my 14-30 is 82mm! I had no problem selling the 77 kit so it wasn’t a major deal.

Question; don't know if you can answer this but being that all my landscape and future landscape lenses are at the 77mm filter thread size and noticed you used a 82mm step up ring for what Nisi sent you, do you know if that or any 77mm filter will vignette on the 16-35mm nikkor or do you recommend stepping up for that lens or just staying at 77mm? I'm interested in the Nisi polarizers and ND filters but don't want to get the wrong size.

I've been there once, and took about one photo, maybe two. Every pool and fall was packed with people. Reminded me of walks along Dove Dale. A return visit in November or February is probably in order.
I read this trail was much quieter compared to the Four Falls Trail nearby. I would say it was just as busy, although expected at this time of year. I did need a lot of patience while filming and photographing, waiting for a pause in the waves of people coming through. Absolutely, you'll probably be dealing with wet and cold weather but the trails should be quieter over Autumn and Winter.
@@CourtneyVictoria - Yes, but also autumn colour in the leaves, more rain means better-looking falls, and rain and mist will give better separation in the woodland. And fewer people :-)
Hi there Courtney, just discovered your channel 2 days ago. Love it.
However, let me tell you a tip (I guess you already know or somebody told you before). You will need an ND filter for your Sony ZV-1 camera to get natural motion blur specially on these waterfall videos... I guess your Sony's SS was something about 1/500, 1/1000 or higher... That makes render the water movement somehow artificial and ugly :) When recording video SS "always" the double of your framerate (so you need the ND), to keep natural motion :)

Can I add a filter on another one without adapters if they have the same size, for instance 77mm? so I’d like to put a black mist on a 77mm diameter lens and then a nd+cpl filter on the black mist. Without holder or adapter can I?

I would like to use the lens Sony 24-105mm on my Sony A7IV, then I would like to apply a Nisi Black Mist on it, and on the black mist I’d like to put the ND64 6stops + CPL integrated filter by Nisi. Will I make a mess of my photos and videos? Would this be a bad choice to make? Is the 24-105mm G really less sharp, bidimensional, sad looking and not good in night, low light or indoors situations? Cause my intention is to get a tridimensional, cinematic looking on my photos and videos.

Nice shot of the Swirling Pool. Here's a tip. Always turn the filter ring on a polarizing filter clockwise. That way you won't ever inadvertently unscrew the filter from the camera, resulting in it falling off of the lens while on your way back to the car after photographing landscapes in Teton National Park. Not that I ever did that.
That's a great tip! I hope your filter was retrievable and didn't become a part of the Teton National Park landscape! An amazing place to photograph though I bet!

Have you ever had issues with auto focus while using a CPL? I have had this issue with some telephoto lens'.
Do you know what is the build for the filter frame? Is a brass or aluminum?
Courtney Victoria, is it good for clouds, or will it be even more burned out?
That is my problem, always fighting with overexposed sky, so I search for a good filter which solves this problem. But I am not an expert for these things.
Really beautiful photos and relaxing videos. I have seen a lot of your videos and I don't see you using a nikon 14-24mm lens, the reason why do you use a 16-35mm lens over 14-24mm? just because you can easily add a filter system or others? don't you need a 14mm superwide? with additional 2mm wider that i think it can be so significant.
I don't own an ultra wide Nikon lens ha, and honestly never thought about needed to go wider than the 16-35mm. You're right though, the extra 2mm could definitely be significant. Next time I'm thinking of adding a lens to the bag, maybe I'll think about an ultra wide angle.
I have the Nisi true colour its very good. I am sure your on tiktok as well ill have to talk to you one day and ask haha 😄
I used to be disappointed when one or two people, let alone crowds appeared in my chosen landscape but now I take advantage of them by using an ND filter and long exposures, or in-camera multiple exposures to create "ghosts" . I also use them as subjects for the rural version of "Street" photography.
Nothing like good polarizer in the bag. Personally I still prefer to use even ND-grads instead of doing it in post. Have used both Hoya and Kenko CPL-filters in the past, but now I use a magnetic CPL by Kase that goes along with their square filtersystem.
I admit to not being much of an ND filter person in the past, hence why I've never really swapped my old filters out for something newer and easier to use. I might reconsider that in the future though. I just accept I do things in post occasionally, but there has been the odd time when I thought 'boy an ND Grad would be handy right now' ha.
@@CourtneyVictoria I would recommend checking out some of the square filtersystem. Both Kase and NiSi make great systems and mostly neutral grads and solid NDs. A tip is to not skimp on the quality if you don't want some extra work in post.
If you wrap masking tape around a jammed filter it will loosen when unscrewed
Trust me I've tried. I've also learned not to tighten so hard. I only really use them on waterfalls anyhow 📷👍
