I love shooting in the winter and fall in Canada Everything is contrasty and dead. Give a good black and white mood of the summer past. You remember how everything was colourful and alive then dies off then revives again in the spring. I always take a photo, what happens if there is a forest fire, that scene is gone forever and at least you have captured it:)
Stumbled across this by chance..... loved your video, and it's so refreshing to listen to someone not spouting catchphrases or painfully trendy buzz words. Lovely, honest and refreshingly quirky. Well done
Subscribed the second you pulled out your DSLR. My 2023 pet peeve is all the mirrorless hype on TH-cam photography channels. Extra points for being a Nikon user. Beautiful images, kudos.
I could absolutely picture the people in the queue staring at the person at the front of the line. You REALLY need to Photoshop goggly eyes on the queue of trees! 😀
I always enjoy the personal quirks and dynamics as much as the pixs. Your teaser for next week could have come right of the shelf of Jane Bond. Loved it. Bill
The American South is also a struggle in the winter. We don't get much snow or fog, but lots of stark gray days or the awkward blue sky with orange-brown leaves look. I'm learning about split tone editing and how well teal and orange go together in landscapes, so maybe that will help. I prefer grayer days and do close ups for a soft, moody abstract botanical. Still, it's an uninspiring setting, so it's nice to remember that many of us live in these challenging locations and keep trying.
You made the right choice with the D850! You may not think you need the megapixels but you do if you play being a landscape photographer right. 99 % of TH-cam and other social media photographers don’t sell their work as large format prints. I sell large prints 40x60 inches and larger all the time, all shot with my D850. Put that beast to work and build a great website to sell large prints on!
I only see a Q of people, for me out of balance, and pehapes a potrait mode , o other composition. D 850 its a great camera . You are a grat Photographer ,Thank you for all your tips and colorfulness.
Greetings, Courtney. Lots of magic in your video, and great tips when shooting in low light. I was out in a forest yesterday here in Vancouver bc where the light was low, yet i like that. In the 58 second and 222 second mark in your video with that foggy background and the mossy tree is what I like shooting. playing around with light, or lack thereof is what I like to capture that, or try to, playing with my colours, in sepia, bw and vivid, playing around with my iso to give it that extra moody feeling. Cheers.
Its 4 in the morning, i cant sleep so hunting down interesting videos. Photography has 2 paths. Firstly the Here is something, look at it, its nice, you want it. Its advertising and the story is very direct and fits alongside popular culture easily. Secondly, we can make images that evoke a feeling, a metaphor for other thoughts and its not the object itself that is paramount. This is art and for the casual viewer is often misunderstood. The casual viewer wants instant gratification whereas the inquisitive viewer will take some time to put their own thoughts into the image. The visual lens based artist is not in the business of giving the viewer an easy time. They want you to meet them in the image. Work such as this gives the artist a voice, the ability to tell a story or convey a narrative that cannot be verbalised. Your work is just that. The metaphor of the queuing people perfectly thought through. BTW, my last Nikon was the D850. Awesome quality.
I enjoy this challenge. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada and there are a lot of days like this, often snowless or close to it for a few months of the winter. I often power through the winter months and eventually take some of my favourite work of the year during the mid-end of winter with these conditions. Really love emphasizing textures and compositions in landscape work. Your photos here conveyed a lot of that and I think they’re fantastic! Great video
I am a bird photographer but your videos do interest me I didn’t realise that there were so many different types of fungi out there so when I am out in the field I will keep an eye out and get some shots thank for sharing
Congrats on your recent surge in regular viewership Courtney, well deserved. When it comes to planes flying over... I tend to have to deal with noisy quadbikes a lot more as I film mostly in Wales 😅
Ooo new gear is always fun! My favourite place - Lamington National Park - is under a flight path so definitely have plane issues there (which is always strange as it feels/is so remote otherwise). My bigger issue though is noisy birds deciding to interrupt me...that and my just getting distracted by almost anything 🤣 You got some lovely shots in spite of the dull light...I have a habit of mostly shooting in landscape orientation in woods and your first path shot is a great reminder for me how vertical with a path can really lead you into the scene.
one other bonus of choosing the 850 is that it is a more modern model, so if you use flash, it is then compatable (via firmware updates) to use the SB-5000 radio triggered model, so giving more range to wireless off camera flash, as well as the transmitter being a 'release'- with a remote included with the radio kit.
Nice step up in cameras! I would explore that area more, you may find some hidden gems to take images of. Try to do a search for the history of that area. Those bricks were some type of building or house or wall at one time. Your shots were great! Thanks for sharing with us!
7:00 With lightroom, you can turn day into night, or enhance lighting in bluffing ways. No wasted shots anymore. There is also a way to capture light using different stops, but I'm not a photographer so I don't know how I could adjust stops on a banal iPhone. Summer's coming, so I really need to learn this latter part. Once you have enough light data, you can adjust your shots a lot more. I'm really in the mood of filming shots in plain day and turn them into night using whatever software I will have at hand once I have the shots.
1: THe YT algorithm showed me your channel, now a subscriber. 2: Love the style of your videos, very enjoyable. 3: As a semi-pro(my terms) photographer, I love your shots! 4: at 7:20 you were considering taking or not taking...as the great Wayne Gretzky said 'You miss 100% of the shots you don't take"..and I think it applies to photography as well as hockey. If you were shooting FILM, that would be a harder choice. But with digital, you can shoot every shot you can, and decide later whether to use it. I took a shot once of one very colorful cardinal...I almost didn't shoot it. What I didn't see was the other ones behind it!! Had I not taken it, I would have missed it. Keep up the good work!
What made you go with Nikon and not Canon or Olympus? I started with a Nikon 5300(before I dropped it), then I got a second-hand t2i Canon. Been through 3 Rebels and now with mirrorless M50 Canon. Not sure I will stay with Canon. Curious of your thoughts?
I love your videos and, you are such a sweet-hearted person. I enjoy nice people they make our world much nicer to live in, and at 70 I have known my share of walking posteriors. ;)
Don’t feel too badly, or alone Courtney, I too am a klutz!! All we can do is laugh at ourselves! I also have an 850. You will love it!! Thanks for sharing the video!
Thought the point you made at 8:00 was a bit boaring! Sorry, awful dad joke! I think the shot at 9:55 of the leaning tree has a form of balance in the 'small many/large one' sense, so I think the composition works, but I'd keep coming back in different lights to see how it shapes up. I like the way you see things.
I like your videos because I do the same kind of camera walking. This way I have my own photo sessions and I have yours. Twice the joy of it. I see you sometimes try to do something out of nothing and it inspires me to try more. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. The joy is the trying, the effort, spending time in the geography, remembering the trips when looking at photos. We have lots of nature around here in Sweden and everything is free to use.
No, courtney, at 9:45 it is a great start of a photograph or a 'concept sketch' on file, try thinking of this with a focus stack at a shallow dof, like an MF or LF film shot, and think of this (the bokeh or out of focus section) as a silk screen, or curtain between the subject and the background.
Hello Courtney Stumbled upon your channel a few days ago, and what a refreshing change to watch someone who not only knows what you are doing, but in such a light hearted and entertaining way too. Not like some of the Po faced idiots who "think" they know it all. Keep up the good work. BTW. Love the dance routines 😂
Yeah, hard to afford but D850's a beast..id like ine myself. Mirrorless weight difference & size is also appealing. Today's tech in Cameras is utterly brilliant.
That first image is gorgeous. Gives me the feeling of a scene from a fairytale. I expect Winny the Pooh to come down that path any moment. Great post processing to enhance the atmosphere!
Congrats on the purchase of the D850. Enjoy shooting with it . I love trees and yes most do remind me of people, lol I have a special tree it looks as if its winking at people as you pass . Wonder if others think trees have faces ?? Looking forward to your next video.
Living & photographing in rural Cornwall, we have some of the most incredible light... But our winter light can be be proper pants too! Note, I say CAN BE, because, among all the 'dog cπ@p' days, when everything tends toward That shade of brownish-grey, there are always some when the winter sun breaks through or, like today, the early frost leads to 'smoke' over the river, etc. Photography is always a conflict of compromises & you need to pick your days & re-think your plans according to 😎
Genuinely admire your dedication to finding a shot in poor conditions. I genuinely struggle to motivate myself to get out with the camera if I can see the light won't be optimal and it's a behaviour I need to get out of. I've taken some of my best shots when I've least expected it and was forced to think more creatively to make a decent image.
5:56 I am many times the same as you, i want to include to much and then when i get home and look at the picture, it is not what how i saw the scene in the forrest and i feel a litle bit disapointed. 6:50 i Prefer the right one here, as you said; itis more to look at. 10:09 i agree with you. 10:32 What a Pleasant surprise about the D850, love that news. 14:56 You look very tough 😃👌
Interesting video Courtney. It's good to venture off the beaten track when going through the woods as sometimes there is a better photo option there. The next video, is it the next Bond girl lol.
Yes, the weather is a bit hit and miss just now and go out into Derbyshire when it looks that a gap of good light is coming. My camera got a bit wet during one session, but I had everything set up for a photograph and was just determined to wait it out. I used my gloves to try and keep the camera dry and watched my hands changing colour. I got the shot and it was worth it. It was an exhilarating experience and a pot of tea and a hot sandwich at Brierlow Bar bookshop was the reward. Sometimes you just have to go out because you just don't know what you are going to find; but wrap up well, just in case. I enjoyed your woodland video, I have a real thing about trees, always have.
Thanks Courtney for sharing the adventure on a gloomy day....I love wide shots that take in a lot of the subject in compositions..... maybe because the lay of the land is so different to what I am used to in Australia....love your work and comments.... interesting comments about the camera choice & I agree that two different cameras are better than two of the same...I am only a hobbyist but I have a D7100 & D500 & love using both with different lenses.... keep up the good work... cheers from Australia 😀❤️
1st comment- great video editing. Clearly took a lot of time but very useful. I can’t wait for my prize for 1st comment. 850 is a great choice. I’m really starting to prefer a dslr over Mirrorless a lot of times.
Hey Courtney, Glad to see you got the D850. I suggested it to you a few months ago when you had your 750 mishap. I rented one for three days, brought it back and then ordered one myself. I love it. I spent a week setting it up and I'm still learning. Enjoy it. Keep them videos coming.
Your first and last image are really nice. Really love the first image; very painterly and peaceful. Agree the last image would look even better with a little bit of light. Your shot with the phone provided a much better result with minimal light. Even better light + the DSLR would be amazing.
I just discovered you again. I realized I watched your past video when you dropped your camera into the stream. Ouch! Enjoyed this winter photography video. I am not very good at composition and I watch a number of people who seem to have a great perspective on composition. I will start going through some of your older video's to learn from you. Thanks!
You seem to me to be a photography prodigy. Your balance of color, light, mist, and thoughtful composition is on par with some of the best photographers based in your part of the world such as Mads Peter-Iversen, Gary McIntyre, James Popsys, and Kim Grant. Remarkable for someone so very young. You are a better photography than me, and I’ve been shooting since 1972.
I am not surprised the hear that a D-850 has come home to roost at your house. I almost made that bet. That hat looked absolutely "polar". Is there a trip in your future?
A hill always envites me to see whats behind . . . The wild you encounter, amazing . . . The Que, yes its there, but not quite . . Body . . . i just drop in, are you a camera body review chanel, the first 12 minutes say no . . . but professionals always have back up!
A year or so ago I came across a like new z7 with 1200 actuations for 1400 bucks. Had been using a d7500 for years before that. The z7 is absolutely dynamite. Enjoying your camera evolution, though I think once you use a mirrorless you’ll never go back.
Hello Courtney, thank you for this video, your YT channel and other content. It's inspiring. My wife and I recently retired, and have turned our love of travel and adventure into our own YT channel, and we are always looking for content that can improve our photography and video content. We tend to focus on getting out of the areas most tourists seem to flock to, and focus on rural areas that are full of beauty. We've subscribed and will follow your own adventures. Thanks again for all you do.
Nice video and great tutorial of picking the right composition. At the beginning, I thought something was wrong with the video but could not put my finger on it. It was at the end when it started to rain, I realized what was wrong: wet Courtney was missing in the video.
Nice video in a place I love, but have not visited for far too long. Also, thanks for putting the list of your gear on your website. That was very helpful.
I'm new to your channel and as a nikon shooter myself (Z5) I couldn't not support you :) happy to subscribe and always good to see more ladies in a very male dominated genre.
Congratulations to the wonderful D850! When I change to over 40MP, I like it that much to have that range and the possibility to crop when my lens is not long enough, that I never will miss ist in the future.
First, good to see that you invested with quality over boots. Walking around in the forest with your feet soaking wet is a bad idea. Second, good to see you're developing your photography by planning where you're going, preparing for the weather and studying the scene before pressing the shutter button. Preparation is key to every successful campaign. Third, be careful of that boar gang running around. They look cute at a distance (like 10 miles away) but not close up! Fourth, using a Nikon D850 to create excellent images? Nooooo! They're too expensive for my liking and I refuse to spend $90.00 to $125.00 US dollars any memory cards. Fifth, keep up the great work and remember, Nikon D850 bad!😱😱😱
Congratulations - You made the right decision purchasing the D850. Be sure to utilize all the touch screen capabilities. That, in itself, is enough reason to use the D850 rather than the D750. For example - with your kind of tripod work, you can easily set up the rear screen to "touch" the screen anywhere you want to focus, and then even allow the camera to trip the shutter with the same touch. Add a 2 or 3 second timer to that, and with one gentle touch on the screen you will instantly focus, 3-second timer, & fire off the shot. One simple touch. Also perfect for focus stacking too, as with each shot, you simply touch the area you want to focus on. This gives the D850 what I feel is the most perfect way to shoot static woodland shots!!!
Hello, Courtney! Your videos are exemplary and it becomes immediately obvious that you have a rare gift! Your D750 was what, at first, attracted me to your videos but then quickly realized that there are volumes to be gleaned. I am considering moving up to the D750 so this particular episode where you discuss both the D750 and D850 were made to order. Thank you so much!
Another fun video and good choice with the D850. I forgot to comment on your bag video, it's a good bag but wait until the Summer... the Yellow attracts every inspect, bee/wasp in the area!!
Victoria I live in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) where the tropical forests are very different from the European ones. I also take pictures of nature. Congratulations on the channel. Your photographic look is beautiful.
This is the first of your videos I've seen really enjoyed it as for the question of should I take the shot or not I always think well I'm here so I might just as well😁 great images I'll be watching more 😊
You've some excellent points to share... I supposed I like the challenge of shooting in challenging weather, especially if one is playing with sunlight that is sporadic, at best. I shoot western North Dakota and eastern Montana which can be a challenge during the long, brown winter season. I enjoy seeing your test images and the commentary about what you "see"... I have looked at scenes before and just knoooow there is an image hiding within but sometimes walk away scratching my head, only to finally see it on a follow-up visit (or... {cough} visits... lol). There is an old adage about not being able to see the forest for all those big green things in the way... Yes... That's me... :P As for buying used gear, I generally have been collecting my glass used in a 9 or higher condition and have yet to be disappointed. Camera bodies I prefer new because of the number of cycles and so on... Forgive my rambling comments but thanks for sharing. Your videos are well-produced and though they are of a serious nature, I rather enjoy the humor that is interlaced. :)
I reallly admire your videos. It's so clear that you put in so much work and your photographs are beautiful. No wonder you have so many views. Glad I stumbled across your channel.
Thanks for watching and your lovely comments! I'm currently travelling but will respond to you all when I have a spare 5 minutes and some good WiFi!

I'm singing in the rain
Just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feeling
I'm happy again
A breath of fresh air to actually find someone who knows what they're talking about. Thank you. xx
Brief Winter Light is "a place" I walked often in my youth. What a lovely image! It brought up wonderful memories for me.
Stumbled across this by chance..... loved your video, and it's so refreshing to listen to someone not spouting catchphrases or painfully trendy buzz words.

I find when photographing in dull light & dull colours black & white can bring more vibranse & life to an otherwise dull uninteresting scene.
It reminds me the forest in Sintra.
Great video Courtney I love your style of video good to see you back 🔥🔥🇬🇧
Congrats on the purchase of the D850. Enjoy shooting with it . I love trees and yes most do remind me of people, lol I have a special tree it looks as if its winking at people as you pass . Wonder if others think trees have faces ?? Looking forward to your next video.
You’re adorable. Love watching your videos all the way from Klamath Falls, Oregon, USA
I totally see the trees peeking over each other! It's brilliant!
Yes!!! Someone else who can see it too! 😂
Beautiful shot @4:07
I agree with you, just looking around can yield the wonders around us.

Very cool video! Love your style making videos, clumsy woman😊. Very nice photos too, I prefer the upwards looking image of the path.
Genuinely admire your dedication to finding a shot in poor conditions. Nice compositions, I definitely saw the queue of people 😅👌👀
In my vlogs I'm.always waiting for planes, cars, people.... myself .. 😳😁
Hi court welcome back for 2023 hope you had a great new years
Thank you
There is a great image everywhere
5:56 I am many times the same as you, i want to include to much and then when i get home and look at the picture, it is not what how i saw the scene in the forrest and i feel a litle bit disapointed.
6:50 i Prefer the right one here, as you said; itis more to look at.
10:09 i agree with you.
10:32 What a Pleasant surprise about the D850, love that news.
14:56 You look very tough 😃👌
Dull Grey and Muddy sounds a lot like my midwest winter photography as well lol
Lovely images! Good camera the d850, great all round performance with great autofocus and beautiful files!
What a trooper you are Courtney sprinting back to the car in the rain still videoing (is that even a word?) ✌️🌻🇦🇺
In an era of mirrorless, it's good to see the D850 (which I have), being featured so well. You're inspiring me to get out in winter.
Interesting video Courtney.
It's good to venture off the beaten track when going through the woods as sometimes there is a better photo option there.
The next video, is it the next Bond girl lol.
Preview of the next video was hilarious!🤣

Great work as usual Courtney. I like being taken through the thought process for the images but also totally here for the weird bits.
Nice video Courtney. I think I will go get some woodland photography at the weekend
1st comment- great video editing. Clearly took a lot of time but very useful. I can’t wait for my prize for 1st comment. 850 is a great choice. I’m really starting to prefer a dslr over Mirrorless a lot of times.
nice to see you out, shame we did not get chance to hook up over the Xmas hols, maybe soon..
Nice to hear a local accent! YT just put this on my home page!
Wild Boars are cool until you are running for your life. Great video.
You have a great gallery and are easily my best find in youtube and instagram lately. Hope to see more of your beautiful work. 🙂
Thanks for the video about winter photography. My friends and family think I'm nuts for taking photos of winter dead plants ;)
Congratulations to the wonderful D850! When I change to over 40MP, I like it that much to have that range and the possibility to crop when my lens is not long enough, that I never will miss ist in
the future.
Very entertaining again, thanks from Wyoming USA!
This is the first of your videos I've seen really enjoyed it as for the question of should I take the shot or not I always think well I'm here so I might just as well😁 great images I'll be watching more 😊
You are simply amazing.
I went from a D750 to a D850 and few years ago. It is a great camera in my opinion. Great video!
I also have the D750 and the D850 both great cameras, the best part is the controls are familiar to each other making it easy to go from 750 to 850
Fab video! Look forward to future ones.
The queue reference hit home!😂
Thanks Courtney. Ottawa Canada here.
09:43 I didn't see a queue of people but I thought the shot was in-tree-guing!😁
I like your humor. Great video.
Happy to have found your channel, best wishes.
yes and dogs running free. knocking in to the camera tripod. P.S lovely video thank you
First time seeing one of your vids. Subscribed - got to support fellow D850 users!!😁
I reallly admire your videos. It's so clear that you put in so much work and your photographs are beautiful. No wonder you have so many views. Glad I stumbled across your channel.
Welcome to the channel haha! And thank you, it's very much appreciated
enjoying your photographic journey, keep it up - good work
The 850 is nice bump from the 750, have fun!
