I have to disagree. The 80s were the last decade of the Golden Age of music which peaked in the 70s. I was there for both of them and once electronics and autotune became common in the 80s, true music died. I prefer real people with real instruments and nothing but talent

When this song skyrocketed to the #1 spot on Billboard, many people who had never heard of Chicago instantly fell in love with Chicago, and those who had loved Chicago since it’s inception, couldn’t believe it was them because the group had not had a hit without Cetera or Scheff since the early 70s.
Peter Cetera had been the de facto voice, and with the advent of music videos on MTV and VH1, the face of Chicago, an inconvenient consequence of the medium and a thorn in the side of most other members of the band who did not want any one member of the band to outshine the rest.
The band had been struggling with the death of Terry Kath since early 1978. They lost the soul of the band, she’d their first producer and struggled for several years with drug addiction and a fan base that wanted more ballads than their avant garde roots of the past. Seeing the future of music videos and wanting to make a name for himself as a part-time solo artist, Peter Cetera took the lead and was the first member of the band to clean up his life by quitting the drug scene that had plagued the band for the better part of the past decade. He also lost weight and got into the best shape of his life. He had recently gotten married, was starting a family and wanted to put his best foot forward in order to bring the band back up and to plant the seeds for his eventual departure from the group. This culminated in the band’s ultimatum to Cetera to either sign a contract of compliance, or leave the group. Cetera, for better or worse, decided to leave Chicago upon the completion of their 1985 world tour and embark on his solo career and a decidedly less demanding schedule that would afford him more time to spend with his family while he worked.
Jason Scheff joined the band in 1986 after the band tried to find a replacement for Cetera and subsequently record their new album, Chicago 18. Scheff was a very good fit for the band, being an outstanding bass player and the tenor voice Chicago needed after losing Cetera. Although Cetera’s departure was abrupt, Scheff and keyboardist Bill Champlin were able to take Chicago into a slightly different direction and kept the band’s success intact until the early 90s when rock and roll gave way to the angst sound of grunge. By the mid-90s, there was essentially no market for the “Chicago Sound” on top 40 radio. At that time, Chicago transitioned into a touring band with a catalog of hits that would still fill stadiums and arenas. The band toured relentlessly, playing their greatest hits and releasing an occasional new song or two on different iterations of their greatest hits albums.
Today, the band only has three original members who still tour with the group. They still tour relentlessly and will still fill smaller venues with their die hard fans.

    • @valuecalc
      @valuecalc ปีที่แล้ว +6

Michael, when too many original band members quit, die, or get fired, then it's often a sign that it's time to hang up the guitars and hit the showers. Otherwise, they can come across as their own tribute band.

I'm one of their die hard fans and I finally got to see them in 2019 in July. They were great! I had a blast with the love of my life. We had 3rd row floor seats. Was hoping Peter Certera would have showed up and crashed the concert. That would have been so cool!!!!!
I use to see Peter Cetera at my job ever so often. One day I said hi as he walked in. He never said ,hi. So that night I went to his fb page. I said to him on his page, it doesn't hurt to say, hi!
A few weeks later I was working at my job. This guy walked in. He said, hi! He smiled. I was off guard and surprised, to say the least, it was the PETER CETERA I was working at a Home Depot. I was cashiering. I looked up and there was Peter Cetera again! He was at the front of the door, heading out. He nodded his head and smiled. Once again, he blew me away with his appearance, and waited for me to look up to let me know he was there. He nodded, and I was totally stunned!!!!!! He's a really sweet caring guy.❤

    From SongFacts...
This song was written by Diane Warren, one of the most successful songwriters of her era and a very versatile tunesmith: her hits include "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" for Aerosmith, "Love Will Lead You Back" for Taylor Dayne, and "Have You Ever?" for Brandy.
Warren says the song was inspired by a friend who worked in her building. This woman had divorced her husband, but they agreed to still be friends. It was clear that the guy was hoping to get back together, and he was devastated when he found out she was going to marry someone else.

    "Look Away"
When you called me up this morning
Told me 'bout the new love you found
I said "I'm happy for you
    I'm really happy for you"
    Found someone else
    I guess I won't be coming 'round
    I guess it's over, baby
    It's really over, baby, whoa
    And from what you said
I know you've gotten over me
It'll never be the way it used to be
So if it's gotta be this way
Don't worry, baby, I can take the news okay
    [Chorus:]
But if you see me walking by
And the tears are in my eyes
    Look away, baby, look away
If we meet on the streets someday
And I don't know what to say
    Look away, baby, look away
    Don't look at me
I don't want you to see me this way
When we both agreed as lovers
We were better off as friends
That's how it had to be
Yeah, that's how it had to be
    I tell you I'm fine
    But sometimes I just pretend
    Wish you were holding me
Wish you were still holding me, whoa
    I just never thought
That I would be replaced so soon
I wasn't prepared to hear those words from you
I know I wanted to be free
Yeah, baby, this is how we wanted it to be
    [Chorus 2x]
When you called me up this morning
Told me 'bout the new love you found
I said "I'm happy for you
    I'm really happy for you"

Only 5 years of memories of him are locked in my mind and are the best because he played with me a lot, he worked, was a high school footballer and quite popular. When you called me up this morning
Told me about the new love you found
I said, "I'm happy for you
    I'm really happy for you"
    Found someone else
    I guess I won't be comin' 'round
    I guess it's over, baby
    It's really over, baby, whoa-oh
    And from what you said
I know you've gotten over me
It'll never be the way it used to be
So if it's gotta be this way
    Don't worry, baby
I can take the news, okay
But if you see me walking by
And the tears are in my eyes
    Look away, baby, look away
If we meet on the streets someday
And I don't know what to say
    Look away, baby, look away
    Don't look at me
I don't want you to see me this way
When we both agreed as lovers
We were better off as friends
That's how it had to be
Yeah, that's how it had to be
    I tell you I'm fine
    But sometimes I just pretend
    Wish you were holding me
Wish you were still holding me, oh-oh, oh
    I just never thought
That I would be replaced so soon
    I wasn't prepared
To hear those words from you
I know I wanted to be free
Yeah, baby, this is how we wanted it to be
But if you see me walking by
And the tears are in my eyes
    Look away, baby, look away
And if we meet on the streets someday
And I don't know what to say
    Look away, baby, look away
    Don't look at me
I don't want you to see me this way
If you see me walking by
And the tears are in my eyes
    Look away, baby, look away
If we meet on the streets someday
And I don't know what to say
    Look away, baby, look away
    Don't look at me
I don't want you to see me
If you see me walking by
And the tears are in my eyes
    Look away, baby, look away
    Don't look at me
I don't want you to see me
When you called me up this morning
Told me about the new love you found
I said, "I'm happy for you
    I'm really happy for you"

2019 still listening to this song. I remember in 1989 I believe I was trying to learn how to play it on a toy keyboard just by ear.

I remember my parents got me a new Ford radio with a cassette player for the Escort I drove to college in 1983. I was so excited to play Chicago, Air Supply, and Barry Manilow everyday as i drove back and forth to college.
