  • The Jewish communities of North Africa (the Maghreb) see themselves as distinct from communities in the Levant (the Mashreq). In this session, learn from members of communities in Morocco and Tunisia.
Jewish communities which thrived for millennia in the Middle East and North Africa are today on the verge of extinction. These lectures will follow the project “Jews of the Middle East,” a series of oral history videos in Arabic documenting the personal stories of Jews who left their countries of origin. We will examine the diverse experiences, and discuss the diverse experience of Jewish communities in Arabic-speaking lands.
With Elhanan Miller, journalist and Middle East specialist.

This nostalgia thing at the end of the video is real and felt, especially being a Berber - from Rif-Morocco ❤

نحن في تونس ليس لدينا فرق بين يهودي أو مسلم او مسيحي لاننا كلنا توانسة و هذا نتعلمه منذ الصغر سواءا في العائلة أو في المدرسة أو حتى في الشارع

Im tunisian and indeed Tunisia and Morocco are in North Africa not in the Middle East. Also, both countries are vaguely arabic and the mother tongue in North Africa is not arabic but a local dialect derivative of arabic ...

In tunisia tunisian muslims take tunisian jews as brothers and protected them instead of other countries the leaders had to protect jews from the people.
The tunisian muslims conceder accepting tunisian jews as part of the islam and culture obligation not forced on them by government.

Very interesting and a lot could be said.
It's not by chance that Jews of Djerba never left. They haven't abandoned their identity deeply Jewish and Tunisian. Unlike almost the rest of the country mainly in the cities, where Jews adopted French culture, names...
Djerbians refused the Alliance Israelite Universelle to operate in Djerba.
Most Tunisian Jews benefited from adopting French culture and helped them succeed in France or in the west in general, but it came at a price, it made them dysfunctional in Arabic speaking post independance Tunisia, A country not as developed as France, but the country of their origins that they love. This movement was not specific to Jews only, Italians, Greeks, Maltese went through the same process but none of them were as indegenous as the Jews and Arabic was not their mother tongue like it was for Jews.

I’m Amazigh-Tunisian, we don’t have problem with Judaism and we love our jewish Tunisian brothers and sisters but Zionism is the devils work, and since ur posting abt a flag that is used to ethnically cleanse the true people of the land and practices apartheid and fascism that no Amazigh man or women would ever support that Zionist false state, I bet u grew up in the west or in Shitzrael 💩🤮🤢 so congrats u have lost the right to call urself Amazigh buddy

I think it's good that it's in English so that even non-jews can watch it. I am from Morocco and I don't speak Hebrew.
