  • Who knew? There was once a Jewish community in Eritrea numbering 500 Jews. Born in Aden, Rami Kanzen spent much of his childhood in the capital Asmara. He will tell us about the country’s Jewish history, from Italian colony through to independence in 1993. Jews from Yemen moved to Eritrea in the 19th century, attracted by economic opportunity, and the country attracted Italian Jews. Today most former Eritrean Jews live in Israel. Only one Jew remains in this African state adjoining Ethiopia and bordering the Red Sea - Rami’s cousin Sami Cohen.

What languages could Eritrean Jews speak? What languages did they speak to each other, and in school, and to the local population?

Eritrean Jews were not indigenous. They were from Yemen or Europe after Hitler drove them out.

I have Jewish roots. because the man who we came from was yemanits Jews, who came to Eritrea. during the Turkish occupation of Eritrea. lived in Eritrea for some time and moved to ethiopia later on. but part of our family came to Eritrea and formed a small town. but we are a converted orthodox Christian and we are intermarried with the local community. Also, my grandfather used to work with a Jewish businessman and he used to tell me about the Jewish community in Asmera in the 6os. he said they were very successful and they never faced any racism at the time. but in the 50ths there was a bit of tension which he considered it normal with some of the Egyptian and Yemeni arabs. other than that they didn't have any problem with the indigenous people (whether they were Muslim or Christian). he also says that the community was very closed community. they don't interact with others. but the older people were more open in many ways. also regarding why the Jews of Eritrea moved out. he says the situation in Eritrea in the 60s started to deteriorate. due to the civil war. businesses were not as successful as they used to be before. many moved to ethiopia or neighboring countries. he said most of the Italian businesses were out of Eritrea in the mid-60s. I believe that's why most Jews moved out. Regarding the well-being of the cemetery, I belive they will be preserved very well in Eritrea. eritrean have great respect to dead people and messing with the cemetery is considered a very big sin this belief exists with both Christians and Muslims of Eritrea. when ethiopia in 1998 destroyed Eritrean war martyrs cemetery. it came to us as a shock and we asked what kind of people are those who do the actions of devils.

I don't believe the statement about the last Jew of Eritrea. Perhaps you meant the previous white Jew, since Eritreans are also Jews although they may be afraid to admit it for safety reasons. I know there are two or three synagogues in Asmara and other cities, but if you'd like to find out more, you should do more research. Unfortunately, some people believe that you have to have white skin to be Jewish, but that's not true. Please respect the Jewish community in Eritrea. I don't understand why Israel never talks about Eritrean Jews.

People stop making up stories. Nobody came from Israel and we were not Jewish. We were always local with the exception of the migration of from and to Yemen. We are ancient people and have plenty of history that dates back thousands of years. We don’t need to associate with anyone to validate our history. We are from the land of the Gods.

It's ok, sister, but you must understand our history, and i hope you are keeping the commandments since the first Ethio complexion human being like Adam a.s. (who was sent to earth 🌎 as first Khalifa)
Edris a.s. (Enoch, who was raised from the ground to the heavens where he was exalted)
and Noah a.s. ( whom warned the polytheism about the great flood) and Musa a.s. (who was sent to save the children of prophet Yaqoub a.s (Isreal)
Then, of course, you accepted Isa a.s
(Who was rejected by isrealites because they can't accept an arab as a messenger of God)
Then, the world should not deny the final Prophet Muhammad peace upon them all. These are monotheism prophets of Allah.

This guest either doesn’t know Eritrea or he is not telling the truth. He very unfortunately started the history from Italian colony probably on purpose. He also casually mentioned the federation of Eritrea with Ethiopia as if Eritreans had any say in the decision. After the defeat of Italy in Eritrea, in 1952 the British and America conspired to hand our country to Ethiopia so the US can control the Eritrean Red Sea. The Eritrean people were deprived of their independence and we were forced into the sham federation with Ethiopia. In 1962 Haileselassie of Ethiopia unilaterally abolished the federation which was against the UN and international law. We fought a bloody war for 30 years before we got our independence.
