Every time I watch your podcasts, I get incredibly juicy nuggets of wisdom. This one with Stephen Bartlett was so inspiring. Hard to believe how much wisdom spewed out of such a young man but old soul. I love the 51% rule. As always, lots of note taking in my journal. Love you Mel!!!
The 51% rule is exactly what I needed to hear. I try my hardest to be 90+ percent sure and it’s making me spend way too much time on analysis and less time on activity. I spend more time thinking about all the ways it’s not going to happen rather than thinking about all the ways it IS going to happen. Thank you Mel!
I haven't even finished watching the video and am blown away by the wisdom of Steven Bartlett. I have been questioning for the last few years about what society says about women over 60 and finding it mostly false. I am embracing my beauty and wisdom. I am also accepting people to express themselves the way they are most comfortable at. I am looking for more fun, experiences, joy, happiness, peace and success at this time in my life than ever before!
I wanted to be a teacher but I stuck with business, not because I was too afraid to change professions but because I couldn't support myself enough on a teachers salary. But I loooove to learn and I love to teach.... so I worked for a long time in a lot of different roles but now I'm a professional trainer for the company I work for so I teach AND make enough to support my family on much more comfortably.
@M43721 I took an entry-level role with the company I worked at and I became a subject matter expert in my role. I took that knowledge and did some smaller projects and stiff until a position as a trainer opened and I went for it.
I think you just proved there are so many types of teachers, and that is not just limited to being in a classroom. Congrats on finding a way to do what you love!
I was on a walk with my dog and thought about calling a family member I’ve been putting off and putting off. We have an unfortunately very divided family. Due to past trauma. I get it. I miss this person more than anything and worry about being denied. Anyway, thanks to your video that talks about overthinking which was exactly what I was doing, and putting it off. I did it! I called him!!! It went wonderfully. Of course there was this elephant in the room, but I wanted to talk and catch up. I got off the phone thinking “I loved that” it was therapeutic. Long story short, thank you for this video ❤ it was exactly what I needed!
The insights from Steven Bartlett on decision-making are pure gold for any entrepreneur. For those looking to apply this, remember that Type 1 decisions are reversible and should be made quickly to maintain momentum, while Type 2 decisions are high-stakes and require more deliberation. It's a game-changer to classify your decisions and approach them with the appropriate urgency and caution.
The 51% Rule!!! Mel and Steven, Omgoodness, I’m learning this principle at almost age 50… I’ve always waited, more like procrastinated on making any decision until I was like 90-100%, and I’ve wasted so much of my life living in indecisiveness. 🤯 This was an amazing podcast that will be a catalyst to turning my life around and moving me forward. We’re only 1 decision away from the best life possible!! Take action, as that first step will lead you to the next step and beyond!! Thank you!! ❤
I am right now in a phase of my life, in which I have to make, perhaps, my biggest decision... And just today, I'm already listening to your talk. It was exactly what I needed to hear, the help I needed and the stabilization of my thoughts and fears. As you said before, random things don't happen to us in life. :) Thank you so much for your impeccable support, the confidence you give us, and the help to navigate our inner selves. Best regards!
Hi, Mell. I’m also 31 y/o. I have found confirmation through him that I am doing the right thing. I feel I am radical when I make my decisions. I do things in a non-conventional way, and sometimes I wonder if I'm doing the right thing, but so far it is working amazingly and living an amazing reality. I see others living by the “book” that aren't living as happy or as successful. It's comforting to get some sort of confirmation that I am doing the right thing through this interview.
Key takeaways are: 1. **Background and Resilience**: Stephen Bartlett's journey from poverty and adversity, including racial challenges and personal struggles, to recognizing his potential, underscores the importance of resilience and the impact of supportive figures in overcoming difficult circumstances. 2. **Decision-Making's Role**: The emphasis on decision-making highlights its fundamental role in shaping our lives. The concept that we make numerous decisions daily, which can have far-reaching consequences, underlines the importance of improving decision-making skills for a better life. 3. **Overcoming Perfectionism**: The 51% Rule is presented as a practical strategy to combat perfectionism and self-doubt by encouraging action over prolonged deliberation, emphasizing that the act of deciding is often more critical than the decision itself. 4. **First Principles Thinking**: Distinguishing between fast and slow decisions and advocating for first principles thinking illustrates a methodical approach to problem-solving by breaking down complex issues into basic elements, facilitating better decision-making. 5. **Intuition and Risk-Taking**: Bartlett's reliance on intuition and his stance on the necessity of taking risks to overcome self-imposed limitations highlight the importance of trusting one's instincts and the potential regrets associated with inaction or complacency. 6. **Personal Growth through Teaching**: The Fryman technique and the practice of sharing daily reflections on social media are suggested as tools for personal growth and self-awareness, emphasizing the value of introspection and the educational power of teaching. 7. **Setting Boundaries and Learning from Mistakes**: The discussion on setting boundaries, especially with family, and the value of learning from mistakes points to the importance of personal responsibility and the sometimes tough love required for true personal development and success.
🤯 The risk is not in taking the step but in staying exactly where you are. What a mind shift!! We are taught standing still is a good thing because we are safe but really we are more at risk for additional bad choices. First podcast I’ve listened to and LOVED it. Thank you Mel and Steven.
Through these 2 amazing people, I changed and realised soo many things. I never understood, why people accept "the simple answer" I always question everything and do it my way. I always thought, I'm sooo different but special. I still think I'm way ahead of everyone around me. So hearing all these hours of podcasts shaped me. Teached me acceptance and I will always and forever be thankful. Also, totally random, while Mel says "where other people fire up a blunt..." I realized how Stevens big toe is hugging the chair legs. Maybe cause in that moment I lighted my good night blunt. 🤭🤭🤭❤
Wowww!! 2 of my favorite personal growth leaders (and their podcasts) TOGETHER! What a way to start my morning. Mel , thank you for challenging Steven with your always relevant questions and, Steven, you are just inspiring. Going through a major time of change in my midlife and the revelations in your talk truly gave me a kick in the backside where I’ve turned some Type 1 decisions into Type 2s and set my mind to them already. I feel big changes coming ! Thank you thank you
Mel, I'm 55 as well and you are so relatable. I feel that I am actually channelling your spirit/voice and Steve's when I'm teaching....! You both share your vulnerabilities (being human) and your hacks to overcome them. Mel, I swear, when my alarm goes off at 5am, I hear your voice- no kidding. Steve, your sharp focus and drive, motivate and inspire me, as well. Thank you to both of you. Great partnership! Windsor, Ontario, Canada
Truthfully these are two of my faves teachers of how to build a great life. Steve and Mel I am so grateful to continue to learn with you both on eachs’ podcast 🤩🙋🏻♀️
I'm 27 going back. to college now after being in a trade I worked for years to come to realize i was miserable. It's ironic because I know I have alot of intelligence and potential but I'm so quick to doubt myself and to let fear dictate what I do and what I don't. I am learning and trying to be conscience to unlearn that non sense and rembering my capabilites. I pray in God that he guides me down me down a fulfilling and happy path. God bless guys.
Mel! Mel! Mel! YOU MOVE ME! I decided today, in this moment, that I'm going to stand out to you. I am going to comment in some *specifical* (my own made up word that totally sounds legit) way, every single time I finish watching an episode, something that I take away from it. The doors you can't walk back thru.. Holy. Holy. My deepest inner self thanks you & your incredible guest, for convincing me into taking action at 51% belief... BOOM!
This episode is a WOW! My favourite 2 podcasters creatively using Steve's set (Mel in Steve's chair) and Mel recapping the main ideas. I literally got out my phone and started a daily recap on my phone because of Steve's story about sharing his day's learning with the world. Not wasting TIME was a huge take away. As a teacher here in Canada, with lots of options in my life, I truly got a lot out of the decision making ideas from these two world class podcasters ('podcasters' doesn't feel good enough of a title here). What a great partnership, Mel and Steve!
This is my favorite podcast you’ve done, Mel. The mutual respect and trust between you and Steven created beautiful freedom of heart, dialogue. Thank you.
I was riveted by the Steven's story. Thanks for the share. From the depths comes strength. Mel, I made a 51% decision right after New Year's. Best decision of my life. Loved this interview. Not just the accent but the fortitude. Oh one last thing. Mel, gotta say...Love the love at the end of the show...makes me feel #hugged.
MELLLLLLLL!!!! Oh my gosh- this video finally showed me, at FIFTY ONE that my whole career has been chasing jobs/titled that my peers and loved ones thought were "worthy of your intellect."
Wow! I couldn’t wait to hear this episode, I listen to both of your podcasts daily. What a treat to have the both of you together! Thank you for your wisdom. ❤
Wow, you have Nigerian roots! That's truly amazing. I'm not sure why, but this revelation brings me such joy on a day that's been rather challenging. It's incredibly inspiring to see how successful you've become, especially knowing the struggles you've had to overcome. Your journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Keep shining!
I love Mel's auditory bookmarks, but in this interview, they were not helpful reframes. What Stephen said throughout this was perfectly straightforward and Mel would often create a parallel example that essentially just repeated what he said. Stephen sounded and appeared a little thrown off by it, but that's just my observation; there seemed to be a train of thought that was constantly being interrupted.
Hey Mel I LOVE your podcasts but recently the last couple of podcasts have been very low volume. I've had to turn my volume all the way up to hear it but then when the commercials come on it blasts my ears out. I don't know why.
This is so inspiring. Thank you Mel and Steve ❤ I started questioning everything, « why can’t I do that » « is this really how it’s supposed to be ?» « is this what I really want ?» and so on. So inspiring ❤
I had never heard of Steven Bartlett before this interview (although I recognize the face from something). His ability to trust his inner compass at such a young age is commendable and hope he gets in front of kids as often as he can - because they desperately need that in today’s world. Really loved listening to this. ❤
Wow! Amazing interview! There's so much information, I look forward to re-listening to it so that I could get the most out of it! As someone who's tried and failed at multiple careers, I'm inspired to try and fail (again!) because all failure is something I could learn from. I think that most people (especially myself) get stuck in analysis paralysis and that stops them from making a decision. And when we rely on conventional knowledge (rather than our inner knowing), we get stuck in thinking that it's better off being a banker than exploring what it would be like to work with kids.
I resonate with Steven's story of internal conflict and raises to think you were bad while always having a stubborn and contradictory belief that none of it was true. I've lived this experience too and it's the number one drive behind my passion to help support at risk kids in education and now supporting adults to believe in their own innate abilities to live the lives they intended to in order to make the world a better place for the next generation. Thanks for sharing this story. More of this out there is how we help others experiencing similar situations realise their worth and true potential and break the cycle of exclusion and scorn for those who live life differently ❤
That's what I did with my business! To move out of the fantasy stage I made a gmail account with my business name and I made an Instagram account with my business name. (I'm so glad to hear Steven say that) And it REALLY works! I gained enough momentum with those two actions that bit by bit I added and added. And now I have an active business!
I greatly appreciate the moments when you pause the interview to clarify points that the interviewer has just mentioned, as it helps to avoid any misunderstandings.
This show was amazing. I felt like I’m coming out of a wisdom masterclass. I’ve watched Steven interview great people but seeing him interviewed is one of the best things! Learnt a lot in this 60 mins!! A Mel Robbins podcast was a thing on my podcast list for long and I’m happy it started off great! Thank you Mel for doing this. Few things were very relatable. Especially loved the type 1 and type 2 decisions of which majority is type 2 and from now on whenever I’m going to have to decide anything I’m not going to sit and let it brew rather go for it real quick despite the result. The best thing that happened today. Thank you to both of you.
This was the 1st Mel Robbins podcast I’ve ever watched! I love your style of pausing the interview and highlighting the pearl of wisdom Steven shared. Thank you so much for your work! I watched an interview with you and Louis Howes. You make everything seem possible! Thank you thank you thank you!
My two favourites together again. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Always learning so much from each of you, and so often the topics discussed are so relevant. ❤️❤️
I love Steven's podcast. Not only is he a motivator of big things, people open up to him like they would a therapist or friend they've known for years. This looked like a fantastic conversation among friends for both of you.
This episode sucked me in...like a tractor beam. It took me back to my childhood. It also has me looking inward regarding the present (personal life and business). Loved the boardroom story (father and son). I can see that I'm currently limited by type 2 decisions (fail forward). It's cruel to not have boundaries. Eye-opening... Thanks Mel! Thanks Steven! What a great contribution to the platform. Time to get off of YT, and go implement this stuff. Wishing you both all the best. -Robert
I like the steps to heightening self-awareness. What Steven suggests aligns well with adult learning best practices. I can relate to what he described about being able to see new patterns after reflecting in this way day after day.
Stephen is right on the money. There are so many different factors in life that you really can't rely on a book or a bit of advice to get the same results as others. Yes, you can be motivated or reminded of what you want to do but, you do have to experiment. I could watch 100 YT videos on how to start a podcast and never be successful at it because I hate public speaking. But, I wouldn't know it if I never tried it.
This gave me soooo much! Especially the different perspectives on how I truly can choose how I look at everything! All my decisions! And to really question everything and DO experiments! ❤❤❤ ...also, you mentioned you never know what to do/say when someone compliments you during their interview...how about what you did plus, "I receive that." It's some reason hard for us women to open our hearts to truly receive. And you deserve the same love you give out Mel!!! 😘
This is perfect. I sometimes imagined this conversation. I love it so much. I try to watch all of your videos Mel as well Stevens videos. Some of them, I watch twice. Such good content. Thank you so much.
Wonderful listen. I would say that editing a talk feels a bit against the point of this format. Would love if you released the full length version and a edited down version.
This was so good. 2 of my favorite podcasters together! Mel, you did such a great job interviewing Steven. I liked how you paused the interview from time to time to really dissect and digest certain points. This is one of those podcasts that I am going to have to review the transcript because there were some very key ideas - especially on risk-taking. Definitely some quotable ideas in here as well. (I keep inspiring quotes of things I learn in an app.)
But Steven, with due respect, you said to yourself that your mother left school at age 5... How about encouraging her to go back to school in the evenings...maybe she will gain a different perspective. Isnt she limited by her knowledge base and exposure? Although you dropped out of University and i ultra successful she had a different experience. It is clear that running a business is what makes her happy so find a way to meet her where she is at. With all the money you have you may think my opinion is ridiculous but your mom is a product of her upbringing.❤
We Nigerians leave precariously through our children. My mum is 65 now and in Nursing school but before then my mum spent every kobo to push her kids thru best university and on graduation she wore our cloak to take pictures. Steven mum as I remember her was always excited, kind, always cross selling African food, Steven bought her dream as she wanted to be hugely successful and thru Steven she is. 🎉🎉 ❤
Great podcast. My fav young man and Mel. I'm listening to it for the second time. Great message that pushes against societal norms. Keep pushing. Society needs to hear this message and more than once.
This was the bessst ever podcast I have ever came across. 👍🔥 From doing something crazy like creating and Instagram page for your business even before starting it to.. Telling or saying NO to your close ones because it's for their good.. I felt like everything was literally meant to shake me and wake me up and push me to go and take the first step towards my goals. 😀 Thanks Mel, for this amazing episode. ❤❤
I so can relate to his testimony. I knew since six I was going to build a better life for me. I’m finally living for me and not what society suggests me to do. Thank you! 🥳
All your podcasts are so beneficial, but this one was transformative to me! For someone who overthinks this is so so valuable. I actually felt my body exhale and relax with this knowledge! 51% rule, yes!!!
This podcast healed some parts in me I didn’t release needed healing. I started this podcast thinking I’ll learn money tips and I was shocked by how much I learned whilst cooking. This is the most incredible episode and I say this about every episode I watch. Thank you Mel for everything you do and continuing to do. And Stephen u r just awesome🥰🩷
This is the first time I was so sad this podcast ended! Both if you are a treasure! Just shared this with my husband and 20 year old daughter who is a junior at Purdue and confused about the future! Thank you 🙏🏽 ❤
I left my nursing career to start a business. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I am in my happiest. ❤ Thank God!

This! This has to be one of my favorites. So much gold! Thank you, Steven. Thank you, Mel.
This podcast was so inspiring! Stephen is so focused and passionate about his approach.
This man. Everytime he speaks he is so so calm. I love it!
The excitement I felt when I saw the video thumbnail!
I enjoy how your podcast make me feel and re-think how I approach my life. Thank you, Mel.
I had never heard of Steven Bartlett before this interview (although I recognize the face from something). His ability to trust his inner compass at such a young age is commendable and hope he gets in front of kids as often as he can - because they desperately need that in today’s world. Really loved listening to this. ❤
His purpose is big. Actually Mel too. Listening to these 2 change my life. Listen to them instead of films🥰
yesss
The two of you have a very complimentary dynamic… so different, yet so alike. My favorite duo dropping gold!!
Amazing. This is exactly what I’ve been learning about and the law of attraction is in action! Thanks for delivering this interview right now.
Love. Love. Love ♥️
The two of you are amazing!
Very nice to see Steven interviewed and not interviewing. Hes so honest and clear. Brilliant.
God she’s so good in getting him to talk and be comfortable being vulnerable
2 of my favourite Podcasters! Mel and Steve, love you both, excellent content!
Thank you for having Steven on. I watch him all the time. He has the greatest guests! I always wanted to know more about him.
This has been a great interview.
1. Self Awareness
2. Boundaries with Parents
Brillient share thank you Mel
I LOVE STEVEN!!! Thank you for having him on your show. It's such a good inspiration to hear him from another side of the chair ❤
Same^! Of all the people Steven could have had to interview him, I'm glad he picked our friend Mel!!😊
Wonderful listen. I would say that editing a talk feels a bit against the point of this format. Would love if you released the full length version and a edited down version.
This is inspirational!! What an episode!!! Thanks a lot 🙏🏾

Thanks!
I have been waiting for this. Thank you
Huge inspiration ❤
This was the bessst ever podcast I have ever came across. 👍🔥
From doing something crazy like creating and Instagram page for your business even before starting it to..
Telling or saying NO to your close ones because it's for their good..
I felt like everything was literally meant to shake me and wake me up and push me to go and take the first step towards my goals. 😀
Thanks Mel, for this amazing episode. ❤❤
Lov you, Mel❤
Steven speaks to my spirit... I've been realizing this over the past ten years,!!!! I've really never heard anyone speak on it as he has ..love it.

Greetings from Trinidad and Tobago
Yay!! Two of my absolute favorite podcasters together! Thank you Mel and Steven, you both provide a lot of inspiration and motivation.
I so can relate to his testimony. I knew since six I was going to build a better life for me. I’m finally living for me and not what society suggests me to do. Thank you! 🥳
I’ve been subscribed to both of you for some time now. Love his content!!
All your podcasts are so beneficial, but this one was transformative to me! For someone who overthinks this is so so valuable. I actually felt my body exhale and relax with this knowledge! 51% rule, yes!!!
This was a fantastic interview. SO much useful information. I didn't want it to end. THANK YOU BOTH!
This is the best podcast I have listened...I listen to all your podcast every week
