Well done Harry! My current PB in non-carbon shoes is 18:41, so almost identical to what you had. I've resisted switching to 'super-shoes' so far, but maybe the time is coming. I did set a new 2-mile PB on Tuesday though, so maybe there's still some time in the legs before looking at equipment.
Awesome video! I didn’t realise carbon soles were available retail. Been looking for some replacements for my kayanos, can’t wait to give these a crack.
Started running in October 2022 and since then I am thinking about wearing carbon shoes. As I felt silly running 26minutes parkruns in carbon shoes I decided to wait with the purchase. Three weeks ago I managed my first sub 22 and decided to set a goal of 18:30 PB to justify the purchase. I know I need to be patient but it's giving me a goal to work for 😊
A sub 20 is a solid goal, Not that I'm an expert but a bit of runner to runner advice/opinion, I can comfortably run a sub 22, and a sub 21 with a hard effort but the sub 20 hasnt been done yet (PB 20:07) I can't imagine a sub 18:30 at the moment, so if I was you I'd aim for the elusive sub 20 and then take it from there 👍
Loving the Videos Harry, Very inspirational. I'm just re-beginning my running journey after being out of action for almost 10 years thanks to a fractured spine, which lead to arthritis and degenerative spine disease. I have joined a running club, and booked myself on a 5 mile league race, even though i haven't actually completed a 5k parkrun nonstop for almost a year, as i had a few other niggling issues, and i lost a lot of progress through the winter months. I also gained a couple of stone too. I want to beat my previous PB of 28:31 which was actually done jeffing the parkrun. I am determined at some point, that i will get sub 22, and i will NOT stop until i get there.
I ran for years on New Balance 880 V(add number). At the end of this march 2023 I started to run on Hoka One One Mach 5 and in one week I broke my PB on the 10km and on the 10 miles. I thought: Is it really because of the shoes? Or is it more like: "I have new shoes, so I must run fast". What also was a factor that there was a strong wind in the back when I ran the 10. The 10 miles was a round with very little wind. Both days I didn't felt very well. Especially on the 10k. But with the wind and the shoes I felt I ran the 10km on a racing bike, while I ran all my runs before on a touring bike. So, even though I din't felt very well, I could maintain a fast pace. The 10 miles I started too quick, as I was a bit scared to collapse, as I did last year. Between 6km and 9km I really started to slow down, but I didn't collapse and after that I gained speed again, as the route went back in the builded area and also the 5 miles and 10 miles merged. Therefore I was suddenly running in a huge crowd of people. I was constantly speeding up to run through gaps. The finish was a straight line for a km, so you could see the finish-line from very far. It was a proper pr. 10km was 41:20 minutes over 10.04km. (My previous time was 41:06, but the distance was just 9.96km. So that was a crooked PR). 10miles is now 1:09:32hour over 16.13km. (My previous pr on a 10 miles I ran during a halve marathon 1:09.56hour.) The weeks after that I felt that my legs where pretty busted up. More than my previous shoes. Hm.
Discovered your channel because of your recent pacing video and have since binge watched every single piece of content you've produced. Started running again, gave up smoking. All in all, things have been looking up since then haha Thank You!!!
Well done Harry! I am hoping one day to improve on my 5km PB of 18:12. However, I have had a knee reconstruction (I ruptured my ACL) and don't know if I will ever get there. Currently can run about 19:45 full tilt.
Well done Harry on your PB, I’ve a pair of Saucony carbon’s and they’ve knocked my park run times from mid 28 to 26.05, although I feel that carbons don’t give you much back on trail park runs, such as my home which you ran a couple of weeks ago, Moors Valley.
Congratulations on the new PB Harry! So proud of your hard work returning from your foot injury, it’s very inspiring. I just finished a similar journey this past Thursday. I had a knee injury 3 years ago and broke 20 in the 5k for the first time since with an 18:28 last week. I’m just 1 minute from my college PB now. Love the videos! I’m hoping to do my first ever park run here in Texas soon.
Dear Harry I was running that Accrington 10k this weekend and good to be passed by a Jog in t shirt had a chat with the guy in the shirt a very nice chap great to hear he was pushing the Jog on theme for the north West
It's good to see a massive new PB in the super shoes, but your fitness and training have helped as well. I have no doubt you will dip into the 17's very soon. PS love the artistic end to the video
Man every video from you is documentary quality!! I could watch this on the national television. All of your videos motivate me and are super enjoyable, keep up the good work!
Another great video Harry, and along with some of the other comments, parkrun content always feeling comforting! Consistently enthused and motivated by this community 💪🏻
Congrats on the pb and the video 👍 Get your support crew on cameras, and you'll easily go sub-18. I've given up ever beating my 5k pb (21:13). Pretty much all my sub-22 5ks were ran wearing Hoka Rocket X.
Your channel motivated me to start running! I will be documenting this journey, I tried running the Kipchoge world record pace on the treadmill which was tough! Unbelievable how these athletes can run at a 2:50min/km pace for 2 hours!
bro! thats huge! congratz! on your pb! these week i did my first 5k sub 30 at 29 min and was awefull i cant imagine doing it on 18 min xD keep the good work!
Congratulations on the PB! I just found your channel a week or so ago and have been loving your videos - looking forward to more :-) I just broke out the carbon shoes after a long winter in winter spikes, and I've got to admit it's great seeing my splits suddenly get faster! From an Aussie in Norway
This is the thing with carbon shoes - they reward the good efforts, so you train hard, you get fast, you slip on the fast shoes and you can’t decouple the big effort from your body from your shoes. I’ve done easy runs in shoes with high end mid soles or carbon plates and been no where, but when you dial it up they give you back what you put in!
A great video Harry. The carbon shoes are certainly an interesting subject. I ran in mine for my half marathon PB. The shoes definitely helped me feel more confident to push harder 🧡
Another BANGER Harry. You should come to Netley Parkrun in Hampshire and do its Summer Course. Lovely scenery and quick course too. Keep up the great content
I wore a pair of Altra's Vanish Carbons to my local park run. I took a minute off my PB, which was a huge surprise. As much as I don't want to admit it, they do make a difference.
Congratulations Harry on another great video and an awesome PB. You will do sub 18 in the near future, I have belief and faith in you for that. Cheers Alasdair
I can’t believe you’ve held out this long!! Great run, nice PB. I’m a Nike fan - especially the Alphaflys. They are my go to race shoe for marathons. Vaporflys I like for shorter distances 👌👌
Big improvements Matt - but quite an obvious explanation really, just started running consistent 40 mile weeks for multiple months, and it made a tremendous difference. Who'd have thought running more would get me fitter - prior to this I was always that runner that did 10 miles one week, 25 the next, then wouldn't run for 6 days, it was very much when I felt like it.
For a long time I raced in the Zoom Fly Flyknit, which although technically did have a carbon plate they used React foam, which is certainly not a super foam. It's still a fairly fast lightweight shoe though and will outlast it's ZoomX equivalent. I've recently gone over to the dark side though (although just for races right now) yet to run a 5k but hopefully a mix of better shoe and overall improvement should see me PB next time. Well done on your PB! Remember although they may be fast shoes you did the running, without you in them they're stranded on the start line.
Wow, well done! I have been experimenting with carbon shoes as well, but personally I really don't think they make much difference, at least at my kind of level. In my view it is more down to the new foams which have been developed. The main benefit, I feel, is that my legs don't feel as trashed after a race or harder training session.
Great video as always Harry, congrats at the PB! I'm saving the purchase of a pair of carbon shoes until I beat a PB set back at the beginning of 2021 that I'm working towards. Though the temptation is proving difficult 😂
OMG your father did the most beautiful Park Run in New Zealand in Queenstown so great to see hope he did a video. Is he doing any others? If I’m Auckland he should try Barry Curtis or Western Springs
Love this video - great work on the PB! I have imposter syndrome about carbon shoes, for some reason I don't feel like I'm allowed them as a fairly average runner. Do you still get the commission cashes if I follow your affiliate link but then pivot to purchase another pair of Mach 5s 😆? I blimmin' love the Mach 5s! Nice and boingy but you're not too far off the ground (I am clumsy and prone to turning my ankle).
I think runners of all standards have felt this Kathryn, I think it's a personal choice, and we all know that there is no substitute for simply building a vast aerobic base through training. My understanding is any pivot still works through the link. Appreciate you asking.
Will follow your sub-18 quest with interest. On a straighter course with no hairpin turns you probably would have done it! Did you consider any other carbon shoes before settling on the Hokas?
Like you I'm trying to get sub 18 and an age grading over 80% (I'm 49 on Saturday). 18:12 last Saturday and my local is a slightly overlong all light trail parkrun. In firm conditions carbon plates work well for me there and I have a rotation of Puma nitro deviate elite, Vapourfly 2 and Endorphin pro 3 (which I haven't tested yet). Let's see who gets there first!
Genuinely didn’t think trainers would make a difference. Then a Parkrun partner came to my local Parkrun yesterday. I signed up to try a pair of their trainers after watching this video this week (not Hoka). Finally went sub 21mins in a Parkrun and took 22 seconds off my Parkrun PB. Looks like I need to invest more in my running shoe.
Congratulations Harry!🎉 Amusing video😂 Regarding shoes, bought the same model and runned a Vienna halfmaraton few days ago.. Very comfortable but not so bouncy compairing to my other carbon plate shoes therefore your time is only your accomplishment.🏃🫡💪

Thanks for sharing. All the best with your running moving forwards
Well done 👏 How many miles you running a week at the moment Harry ?
Cheers Paul, just north of 40 in a good week
I’d love to break 18 too - maybe this year? I hope so!
Hoping so for you too Vince
Genuinely didn’t think trainers would make a difference. Then a Parkrun partner came to my local Parkrun yesterday. I signed up to try a pair of their trainers after watching this video this week (not Hoka). Finally went sub 21mins in a Parkrun and took 22 seconds off my Parkrun PB. Looks like I need to invest more in my running shoe.

@@thisisjogon and since then… I have gone from 20:58 to 20:31 (new trainers were purchased). Now all for some tips to get to sub 20.
Bloody quick

Impressive, Harry! Well done. Any plans to do a marathon in the near future?
There may be something in the pipeline..

Thanks Nikola
Really hoping there's a Manchester based meet up at some point!
Hoping at one point, just no team yet to build the scale. It's coming
