I used to listen to Dotcom heavy back in the 2013-2015 trap days. When the first few Marshmello songs came out, I immediately knew the drums, and how they were mixed, were the same as Dotcom’s. and Dotcom had a few tracks that had jersey club drops with a trap switchup that sounded like early Mello songs. and the 808s Mello used were almost identical to what Dotcom was using at the time. Im a huge fan of bass music and have been for a long time, but yeah i definitely noticed it early on. amazing video as always pat 🔥

A more apt comparison might be to Bro Safari, which is a side project/alternate alias of a member of Evol Intent. Prime Loops also isn't a stock music website but a site to purchase sample packs to use in music.
i also feel like its worth mentioning that knife party isnt a side project of pendulum but rather a side project of rob swire and gareth mcgrillen, the rest of the band has nothing to do with it.

I respect him as a person and I would never force him to revel his identity. I would enjoy him rather he has his mask on or not.
I can tell you from someone who has met the guy, he knows how to use the DAW and produces his own music. He, just like most people at the top, have engineers to mix and master his tracks now. Dude can’t be an industry plant if he knows how to make music and knows how to DJ. Many others are better at it than he is, but today marketing prevails over skill in EDM; and anyone who has made dance music within the last 8 years knows that’s the reality.
Marketing has always prevailed over skill in entertainment. It's what brings bank and money is something anything helpful to push you even further can get behind to further push someone ahead. It was even more important to do proper marketing before the internet was a thing. It's the number 1 reason why most artists having something good enough to take off don't make money doing what they do despite being better than their competitors skill wise.
Absolutely Man. It is really essential for us to take a step back and look at the industry as whole not just blabbering on half the knowledge. Patrick doesn't really seem to get the culture of EDM. You can have the best music but without good marketing it's really hard to make it out through the other end, Even The Chainsmokers have admitted it. Now a days marketing is absolutely essential love it or hate it. Mello he's just here to do the job grab some money all artist need that one way or the other.

The problem is that's not what they're doing. They're engineering satisfaction using psychological and subliminal manipulation, for maximum revenue growth. Those aren't "music scientists" those are Psych majors following the orders of MBA majors with "advice" from musicians who are cut a check and are happy to not be a "starving artist" anymore. They're more _telling_ you what and how to "feel the music" than figuring out what you actually like and catering to that. Well orchestrated business moves by Moe and Chris… whether you like Marshmello’s music or not you have to at the very least respect how monumental the Marshmello brand has become. I really like this one! My only feedback is in the wrapup at the end, you posited EDM/dance music as a product. In my opinion this isn't true, because dance music/EDM is just like any other genre. It has its artists, its oddballs, its alternative producers, people who view their work as extremely unique and not a product. EDM is just another genre of music, I think asserting that it is a product is reductive. Other than that I really liked the documentary!
Yea but to say all of EDM doesn't have vocals is completely false. This dude clearly doesn't listen to enough EDM to know that. He lost me at the end. Hipster trashing EDM...no shocker there. @@phabiorules
Yeah I think he makes a weak point though. You can call any artist with a manager and a record label a “product” because it’s a capitalist economy and people have to make money, just like any other industry. That doesn’t mean the music isn’t still art, though it may make it less artistically enriched. The “product not art” statement is a baseless claim that weakened the video if you ask me.
@@carsonlove531 you could say that, but the point that people make when they say that is the intention. the company and usually the artist have the full intention of making a product, a line of products. they never intended to make art and will never make the sacrifices or risks that art entails. (im talking about pop mainly not indie/etc). business inherently lacks some of the qualities of art. you dont have to make money with music either.
the part about people who say that marshmello is their fav artist is so real, back when i first got into him, i was literally like 9 lmao but also, to this day, i dont think his music is that bad? maybe bc i grew up with it tho, idk
The fact that people enjoy marshmello's music than trying to uncover his identity is probably one of the best things about the edm community, it doesn't matter what he does in his free time with or without the mask as long as his music is good enough to send positive vibes then its a win in my book
Been going to fests since 2017 and most ppl I've spoke to aren't fans of him LOL. Ppl who are very new to the scene like him. He used to be my fave too before I really got into the music. His music is very mid. That being said, in any community there's people who act too high and mighty. There's always ones who take that patronizing mindset. Live and let live. Being a fan of Electronic Music & heavily invested in the scene from back in the late 2000s I definitely miss the social media days/"EDM twitter" back in 2013-2016 going down Soundcloud rabbit holes discovering lots of these artists you mentioned. And for the folks that were following all this stuff back in those days with all the names & labels mentioned like OWSLA, NestHQ & a bunch of others, within a few weeks Marshmello bursting onto the scene people quickly narrowed down the list to either Jauz or DOTCOM being Marshmello so that trick Tiesto pulled at EDC only really had shock value to the mainstage kids who had no clue of what was going on. I liked a few of his first few tracks that had heavy bass elements but I wasn't too keen on the forced beef/drama he tried starting with household names like Deadmau5 & once he fully transitioned into a Pop brand & all the "Fortnite" stuff I completely checked out. It was obviously wild seeing DOTCOM go from an average remix producer/run of the mill DJ to a global brand in real time & good on him for his success but for many purists of the wide genre of Electronic music this was a signal of the direction the whole scene was headed in with lots of promising names & even some seasoned veterans completely ditching their own sub genres/sound & switching to generic Big Room/Mainstage sound or just straight up pop music which they were just doing to try & stay relevant with the growing crowd of "mainstage" fans attending the big EDM festivals. I liked watching this cause it brought back a lot of memories & things I haven't really thought about in years tbh & you broke down a lot of the little details pretty well so even fans of this guy who may not have known his backstory can learn a few things about the scene in general.
All of your content is so good. The way you talk is very calming and it's clear that you put a lot of effort and time to into researching your topic and also making it entertaining. Thank you. 🥰
Yeah so multiple producers work on one project for the majority of popular releases. It’s pretty obvious Chris started the whole thing but this is just how the music industry works if you just wanna make pop music. No one person does everything at that level.

That's a pretty concise way of summarising corporate music: not art; a product.
Well art is a product. A product you can consume. Unless it’s a hobby for yourself, the art you make is a product for financial gain.
Hell of a come up. Rebranding ain’t illegal or anything. It’s smart.
Those aren't "music scientists" those are Psych majors following the orders of MBA majors with "advice" from musicians who are cut a check and are happy to not be a "starving artist" anymore. They're more _telling_ you what and how to "feel the music" than figuring out what you actually like and catering to that.
I think he was saying that Marshmello doesn’t create art, but a product. EDM just made it easier due to its lack of vocals.

Crazzzzyy basement dwellers out trying to give music advice to those who haven't even made it successful 😂 stay in TH-cam comments. Where ya'll belong. You ain't making music.
@@kylegibson5933 It's crazy that someone thinks that if you saw someone paying to be on your ads 24/7 that makes this person a real musician. You have been tricked by this industry, it's all fake generic shit to make you be amazed at money and fame and be a puppet throwing money and attention at them and even spending time defending them on internet
the last 30 seconds summed this video up pretty well. well said pat!

@@Theunicorn2012oh you missed this one.
This kept me entertained incredibly from the entire video, good job BRO! I was waiting MORE jajaja
I'm 10 seconds into the video so take this with a grain of salt but I know plenty of people who saying Marshmellows songs are some of their favorite. He has a lot of really cool songs with a lot of really talented artists he's more of a producer than an artist but producers are finally getting recognition thankfully, by becoming artists themselves.
I still listen to flash funk when I'm training. Loved his sets in 2017/2018
Didn’t expect to see you here Mike
Get into some Deadmau5 Mike he has so many sounds. Also talk about the Kevin Byard trade
I'll say again, I love this channel, because its content is literally as fresh as possible while being in the genre of true life storytelling of intrigue. I've never heard of Marshmello or EDM (don't even know what it stands for) or any of the songs in this video. I've heard of Skrillex but only because of ERB!

Lol
That's First 10 Seconds Roast Is Wild 💀
Marshmello is the modern crazy frog
As a skrillix hater, of course he put everyone onto Marshmello.
RIP UK dubstep, listen to Burial
Iam glad that Mala showed me the real dubstep.
I’m big in the edm music fandom… have never heard a single person so he’s their favorite dj. Though at festivals, a lot of us enjoy his sets.
I enjoyed some of his work in 2017-2018. One song had the lyrics "i don't see the point in fighting" and i loved it.
Mid summer 2017 of marshmellow was epic lol, ahhh good times
I was just driving here in Vegas & saw Marshmallow billboard for an upcoming event & just watched this which like your previous episodes, like ALWAYS you Produce TRUTH... MADE ME THINK..just like anyone for 100 yrs can dj as Marshmallow... so can people dance as JABAWOKEES.... where most dance crews have a shelf like
I met Dotcom in Philly when he was opening for Kapslap! Then I met Marshmello a couple years later and they sounded exactly the same in person! He's still a Goat and I always said he deserves more!
Marshmello isnt a industry plant , its just a strategic business , thats smart af
Anyone with ANY TINY bit of artistic talent doesn't respect it though. From a business standpoint? Sure, I guess.....I mean I can't say it's "bad for society", it's not hurting anyone so I can't hate on it either.
@@jimmypeeps8471he does get to reep the rewards without anyone recognizing him. I say that’s a big win.
This a sick one bru I would’ve never known any of this if not for u and to Just give undeniable proof of who he is like that😂
