- Cherry Step Stool || Traditional Wood Joinery ...In this video I show you how I took some warped, cracked, twisted and pith-y cherry that was destined for the fireplace, and turned it into a step stool with traditional wood joinery. A twist of walnut was added to complement the richness of the cherry. The use of traditional joinery, like mortise and tenon and wedged mortise and tenon, make this piece completely bomb proof and it will no doubt outlive me. And of course, there were mistakes made along the way, but where's the fun in doing everything right the first time? LOL. Wow, so glad I found this video. I've been thinking about how to construct my next project (wooden stool). How you fastened the legs with angled tenons was just what I was imagining. Didn't know if it could actually be done, but now I have seen that it indeed can be. Beautiful work. Loved watching your work flow; interesting tools were used also. What was that flat red metal piece with the angle markings on it? That's by Wood Pecker, correct? Last compliment, I promise; great music and really enjoyed the word pop-ups throughout. Your wife came in and distracted you? Say it isn't so. Mine always wants me to stop and watch her latest find on the laptop screen which she brings into the shop. All-in-all, thoroughly enjoyable. Not much to add to all the positive comments on the step stool BUT! I'd like to know more about your tablesaw fence. I want to build/convert my old Delta/Jet round tube fence to a Besmyer t-square type fence. What say you young man?

Sorry Keith, can't spell. Asking thickness on stool bench top. Also, is cherry a heavy wood?
Top and legs are 1" thick. Cherry is a hardwood, but slightly softer than walnut. It's not as heavy as Ash, but it's minimal when speaking of something this small.
9:41 I do not fold laundry: Everything goes straight from the dryer to the drawer -- lay it out flat is good enough.

If you turn your wedges a quarter turn you will be less likely to split your top. Perpendicular to the grain of your top.
Good call!! Back when I built this, I actually realized after the glue-up that I had the grain running in the wrong direction for the wedges to be truly effective. Luckily nothing split and it's still strong like bull today. Thanks for the tip! 👍

Great video! Awesome build. You have some awesome tools. How do you like the woodpecker drill press table. Been looking ar getting one
Thanks Nate! I love the Woodpecker table (as with all Woodpecker stuff), but have 2 small issues:
1. I wish it was a little deeper. The fence adjustment will only go so far back before it falls out of the t-track so you are limited on how far you can drill from the edge without removing the fence.
2. It would be nice if the fence was a little taller. I do have the tall fence they make as well which is more like a table saw fence which is good for drilling pieces on edge, but it's so tall that my drill press handle tends to bump into it.
Overall, it's extremely well-built and great for repeatable setups with the flip stops.
I think they are running a big sale on them right now, so might be a good time to take the plunge!

That's the same face every guy gives when asked to help a woman with something they both know she can handle on her own. This happens usually when a guy has been working on other projects around the house. Men do 42 projects without asking for help, Women 3 projects and they always ask for help.

Was listening to Shop Sounds today and you referenced this video (Episode 23). Wasn't sure what you meant by relief holes for the wedge slots (7:20) but NOW I see what you mean. It makes perfect sense. I think Chris - Third Coast Craftsman - used this technique (step) as well. Thanks for the video, super instructional! That bench looks awesome as well.
