- Bonya and her husband Avijit Roy were targeted by Islamist terrorists in an attack which left her gravely injured and Avijit dead. Seeking to understand why this happened, she realised the question she must ask is not "Why did this happen to me?" but "Why NOT me?" In this deeply personal, powerful talk about her recovery and how we build a more peaceful world she urges us to reject the simple narratives offered by politicians and extremists alike, to grapple with complexity, and stay engaged.
At TEDxExeter 2018 we focussed on making connections - and building bridges. Rafida Bonya Ahmed is a published author, moderator at Mukto-mona blog, the first online platform for Bengali speaking freethinkers, and has been a Visiting Research Scholar at UT Austin since 2016, working on the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.
Bonya is the widow of Avijit Roy, a well-known writer, blogger, and activist who founded Mukto-mona. Avijit was murdered when they were attacked by Islamists during a book signing trip to Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2015. Bonya was gravely injured during the attack. Violence is unacceptable for whatever reasons. No one deserves to die this way. Painting Bangladesh 🇧🇩 as a representative of Islamic extremism in front of the whole world is not going to solve your problem. There are some religious beleive deeply routed in Bangladesh, which is not easy to eliminate. Atheist, LGBT supporters and anti-religious statements will certainly put bloggers/ writers into life threatening situations here. Majority are of muslim nationality here and extremists are around. These atheist practices will allways be strictly condemned in this land.
Apart from this, even political crimes, random murders and attacks are not uncommon here. Staying in a western country for so long, I personally am super vigilant while travelling to Bangladesh with my family. The shortcoming are there and we all are just adjusting around it.

Of course, the majority of Muslims I know condemn such extremists and do not think they are representing what they call real Islam. Yet, the extremists cite their religion in their actions and believe they will win heaven for it. How do you think I as an outsider to Islam should interpret that internal disagreement? (Also, in other Muslim-majority countries such as Saudi Arabia, many of what the Muslims I know consider to be atrocities are embedded into law and justified using the same religion.)
This extremists don't represent Islam by any means. It's really sad to see random persons getting killed just for having a different opinion.Believe me,Islam is all about peace.It's not about killing someone for having a different opinion,it's about respecting everyone and if someone talks bad about Islam,we should say "May Allah give them hidaya'h."
You have to differentiate between real Mujahids(Ansharullah) who killed some of these insects who used to continously spread hatred against Islam whereas Khawarij (ISIS) killed people who were innocent Non-Muslims

You guys, say this, are creating more obstacles rather than solving the problem. Of course all extremists represent islamic rules and regulations. Otherwise, why there are so many islamic terrorist groups? We don't see this kind of and huge number of extremist groups in other religions, even if there are some in hindu, the number is very few. Quran directly ordered muslims to slaughter atheists. It also told them to kill non muslims, multiple times. So, stop defending the root of the problem. Just read the Quran and you will come to know everything. It's the one of the vicious books in the history of the world.

She had like 19 minutes and wasted most of it. Very weak and unfocused script. Last three or four minutes had some great ideas which could have been explored in depth had she been economic with time.
