    In the animated film, Mulan left just so her father wouldn't have to. She probably didn't expect to ever make it back home, since she thought she was a failure as a daughter/bride. Then in the camp she was given opportunity to go home alive, but chose to climb the pole when no one was looking (at first) and just do it for herself and her own potential. She continued to be an example of wisdom over strength and bravery not because she was fearless but because she was selfless.

    • @DonnaBrooks

      Yeah, the message of the animated Mulan was empowering to women & inspiring to everyone. IDK WTF the message of the live-action movie is supposed to be, since I haven't seen it. Based on the pitch meeting, though, I'm glad I didn't go see it in a theatre! Thanks for the summary of the animated film!

    • @JohnDoe-dj3lw
      @JohnDoe-dj3lw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah it's those subtle differences, like a scene climbing a pole alone instead of doing it in front of a crowd ready to cheer. They mean something, they make, support and hold character growth. Some writers nowadays do not understand that and they simply accept the job for the checks, they don't wanna actually tell a story. Not even when they already have one on their hands. They think top quality CGI is enough to make a good movie and sell it. Hell to the no.

    This movie was salvageable if after kicking off the armor and arriving at the battle she was immediately struck down by the casual jab of a spear and the credits rolled... that would have been hilarious 😆

  • @WastedPo
    @WastedPo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Not only did she "already have her powers," but she shouldn't even HAVE powers - like, ever. That not only undermines any female empowerment message, but it undermines ANY message in the movie. The entire reason the original story resonated with anyone was because she was a universal underdog. The odds are against her at every turn, and she gets by using wit and courage.
    I can't believe the story developers nerfed the building blocks of their own movie. It's like they didn't understand the tenets of storytelling. "Hey let's reboot Rocky. But let's have him tower over his opponent, never have to train, and knock out Apollo in one punch."

    That's the problem with Disney movies these days, and well a lot of films. The main female character, and sometimes all of them are already strong and powerful and don't need to train (looking at you Rey) because hey their women, their better than men. Trash. Alien gave us Ripley and the first/second Terminator gave us Sarah Connor. Two amazing examples of how to make amazing female characters that everybody respects. They start with nothing and become something amazing. Respect.

    Honestly the moment that really rubbed me the wrong way in the remake ( No joke, I almost rage quit on the movie and it just made watching the end worse for me. ) was when they came across the burned village. So much of what made that scene so great in the original is just gone in the remake. First, the wonderful transition is gone. Even without the song, instead of having the conversation about what they want their wives to be like at the camp, they could've had it while they were traveling through the country side. From my memory, I don't think they even had any shots of them traveling before that scene. They just cut from when they're leaving the camp straight to the burned village. That and while the supporting cast is okay, Mulan's actress still has the same blank face like she's had for almost all of the movie as they go through the village, and it's so aggravating to see her have absolutely no reaction to what should be a very heroing moment in the story cause that's the first time any of the soldiers have seen this kind of destruction ever. That and since Shang wasn't in this, its missing what I feel was the best part and what made Shang a wonderful character in the original. You see the destruction of the village, and then you see the thousands of dead comrades that died defending the village, and then you get the real stinger, Shangs father is one of the poor souls that was killed. And even though this hurts Shang, and he does mourn his loss, he keeps leading the army and remains strong despite the horrors they've just witnessed and despite the fact that that same fate could come to his army as well. China would've been screwed, but he could've retreated with his comrades, and instead he leads them through the pass to try to catch the Huns before they can get to the Emporor, knowing he could just be sentencing everyone to death. It is such a wonderful and inspiring moment of someone doing the right thing despite what could happen, and since Shang doesn't exist in the remake and the new love interest has the barest of an existence in the movie, there's none of this in the remake. And the cherry on top to this catastrophe is while the original scene goes on for almost three minutes and forces you to experience this destruction with the characters, the remakes scene doesn't even bother to last for a full minute of screentime. It is just terrible.

    It's interesting how if they aren't doing a 1:1 remake of a movie, executives have no clue nor care about the themes and ideas of the original. They move in the complete opposite direction. They're perfectly fine with putting out a bastardization with the full intent of cashing in on nostalgia and name recognition. They know that a portion of the population will watch the movie if they just release a decent trailer. Even if they were planning on taking more inspiration from the original story, they completely missed the point of what the story was actually about. You can make an adaptation that still retains the message of the original, despite being slightly different in execution and detail.

    I enjoyed the movie. It wasn't the best disney remake but it's not as bad as people say it is. I didn't care that there was no singing and no Mushu. Disney said from the beginning that it would be more realistic so I knew what to expect. However, the magic powers thing was something I did not like at all. It seemed cheap and unearned. I was also a bit disappointed that the pole scene and the epic scene where she first puts on the armor were changed and the fact that this thing was filmed in a region where detention camps are still a thing is just unforgivable. Overall, I don't regret watching it but it's been highly tainted by all the controversy behind the scenes.

    My understanding is that Disney wanted to make up for the the one they released in '89. I'm guessing you didn't know, but it bombed as hard as a movie can in China. Sure, it was boycotted by the Chinese government, but Disney didn't do themselves any favors by disregarding quite a bit of the source material. Disney cherry picked parts of the story they wanted to tell and made their own story, which many people in China found very offensive.
    The live action version of the movie, has a lot more input from China and follows the Ballad of Mulan more closely than the animated film did. Mulan was supposed to be a badass...which is why she was a badass. I didn't take any issues with this movie, but if I held the original close to my heart, maybe I would have.
    I'm more curious about China's reaction to this, as this was made for them.

    • @TheRealIronMan

      lol Nah, its not made for China, if so they would have chosen a Chinese director instead of Niki Caro

Cause it's just as bad as the Lion King remake but i n like the opposite way of changing too much and pointlessly removing the good stuff and giving it crap. The I oh good thing was the actress who played the witch, I feel like she was trying so hard and I felt so bad for her being in such a crap movie 😣

    This 'women are already perfect without needing to train for years or go through a hero's journey' obviously appeals to a female audience, otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it. Says a lot about the modern female ego.

      I'm a woman and I think this isn't accurate. All their movies about woman empowerment are almost always a flop because we didn't ask for it. Hollywood is trying to appeal to women about their feminist agenda but it always backfires, because women don't want that either (of course I don't speak for all women)

    • @daisychong3488
      @daisychong3488 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ethelann No, you're totally right. Feminism is about gender equality, not saying women are better than men Because. There's no logic behind that reasoning. The reason why Mulan becoming 'like the men' or being celebrated in a ballad is so empowering to us is because she earned this herself through hard work and dedication, against the odds as well as the prejudice during those times. The fact that they took this away from the movie felt like an insult to me.
