- After seeing our review of the 2020 Lexus LX 570 - essentially a new Toyota Land Cruiser in heels - one of our followers reached out to share his 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser "FJ62" with us. Ed's 1989 Land Cruiser is part of Toyota's 60-series family, technically considered a 62 given it's a facelift truck. Here's what we thought of this classic Toyota SUV.

@@igorv4631 80 series is. The 80 is a better truck in pretty much every single way. It's just not as pretty. :)
Great video, looks a really tidy truck and a credit to the owner, I have an 1987 60 series here in NZ. It’s an automatic in gold with the 4.0 6 cylinder turbo diesel which really suits the vehicle. I’m a big 60 fan so thanks for making the video.
Thanks for watching! The truck is in really good shape up close. We didn't get the diesels in the U.S. but have driven a gray-market imported diesel Hilux Surf (our 4Runner) a few years ago. Definitely has a lot of charm!

@@oldtoyotas How much did the swap cost you? And how did you address the wiring required for the swap? I’m interested in doing the same with mine.
The cost will vary, I was quoted upwards of $40K from a shop. It didn’t cost nearly that much. A motor alone will run you $1,500-$3,000+ depending on a few things. I have a long time buddy with a shop so I worked with him, sourced a lot of parts and stuff on my own. He did majority of the work, he’s the brains behind it. He handled wiring, but from what he said it was pretty straightforward if you know what you’re doing.

Is it true that you need to start on 3rd and once you reach 3000rpm change to drive?

That’s a rare version, since most of the FJ62’s are 3F carburated, was it modified?
Anyway that’s a classic!
All FJ62s use a fuel-injected 3F-E, assuming USDM trucks. We're not sure how they were sold in other markets. No drivetrain modifications to the one we drove!
My 89 is fuel injected.
how many times are you going to say the suv you're driving is an FJ62? Use the time for making other points about the vehicle... Also, if you say it, you need to show it. For example, when you mentioned the round lights on an older model, show the other model with rounded lights-- whether that's a picture or a video or a side by side comparison.

Your head is practically in the roof. How tall are you? I'm a little over 6' 6", I'm not sure I'd fit.
6'1" - this was filmed a while ago now but "tight fit" stands out as a memory.
@@OutMotorsports ah, yeah if it's that bad for someone 6' 1" there's no way I'd fit. Shame, I've always thought they were great looking vehicles. I've never had an opportunity to sit in one though.
Weird that cap on the engine says “toyoda”
That's the actual name of the founder "Sakichi Toyoda" and the company's initial name. The replacement for the "T" has an interesting little background story. You can google for it :)
