I lost my mom weeks after lockdown. Months after, I remember hearing this song when it came out, and loved the sound. Time passed, and it wasn't until now that I actually paid attention to the lyrics. Recently coming out of feeling incredibly down for months, occasionally grieving. I happened to hear "Hurt" today while going about getting life together and something clicked. That's when I took notice of the words. I think today I was just in the right headspace to properly take it all in. Hours prior, I had a brief moment of tears and sadness and I think this was one of those little moments of a bundled hug that let you know things will be okay. My cat recently passed away, and I have been grieving so hard. She was my best friend all my life. I have also lost one of my closest friends and two of my other friends. I can barley talk to one of my other friend groups. And my significant other is moving across the country in a couple days. I’m currently sick, and going through a lot at the moment. Losing my cat was the cherry on top. She has been with me through me not having a dad when I was younger. Through my father figure dying, twice. Through being poor in childhood. Through moving houses three times, through my mom marring somebody and me gaining a step brother and sister, through so many fights and so much drama with everything. Through me losing friends. She has always been here for me, and we had a connection. I still remember the day we got her from the rescue shelter. We took wonderful care of her, and I loved her with all of my heart. Now that she’s gone, I feel absolutely terrible. I can’t let go, just like you sing about. But this song is so moving. You don’t understand how much I needed this. It reminds me that everything is going to be okay. Pets die, that’s just how it works. Almost everybody has to go through this. In this song, I actually feel like my feelings are understood. It’s a motivational song but it actually makes me feel better. This song touched my heart, and brought out emotions I buried deep down. It reminds me how when both my father figures died, one after the other, I was broken up. But I was able to overcome my grief, so I know I can with this too. This song is helping me through this. I know everything’s going to be okay with this. Arlo, thank you.
