It's December 2024, and this video has helped me, a financially challenged Mother, fix my dryer. The first time I watched this video and fixed my broken heating element, it worked, but only for a couple loads. Mind you, I am "McGivering" the part needed to crimp the parts together. My 1st attempt I fabricated a piece of metal for crimping the wires together from electrical wire joiners. I used a larger size and didn't work lon-term. This time around, I am using a medium sized piece from a smaller joiner. Also, It's very hard to crimp the metal tight enough. I read somewhere in someone else's comment that using a vice grip helps. This time around I used a needlenose vice grip, and he/she was right. If you have a needlenose vice grip and are thinking about trying this fix, use them. I am happy to find this tutorial on TH-cam, as it will same me funds that I need elsewhere, possibly put another Christmas present under our tree. Thank you!
My condolences to the family. I didn't realize your lost until I read farther down the comments. My first time watching one of Bill's videos. Thank you for continuing to share them. God bless you.
This worked for me 2024! I had the crimp i needed at home already, i just had to remove the plastic insulation cover. Reading the comments, Bill has passed. What a great legacy still helping people!
I was beginning to crimp, when my inner voice of experience said to check for a video. Only difference in our repairs are that I gently used an abrasive stone to remove scale from the element ensuring a clean contact, and I am using two of the thick steel wire crimp connectors to double ensure a secure connection and avoid a hot spot. Excellent video, Bill! Thank You for providing a positive second opinion.
You prolly dont give a damn but does someone know a way to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Westin Benton Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I thought this would be possible. I am waiting on my landlord to ship the replacement element after I troubleshot everything. I am thankful to see someone report success to what I thought "should" be possible, LOL! Thank you for the video, all these years later and you're still helping people.
Thank you for making it possible for me to fix my dryer today for $0. It's Christmas time, so had nothing extra for repairs and laundry was starting to pile up. Thank you so much!!!
I just finished doing this on my dryer. I'm ordering a new heating element to repair it completely. Also replacing a bunch of other stuff like belt and rollers while I'm in there. I had an idea I could somehow rig the heating element to get by till the parts came in. Your video is exactly what I was thinking about. I did it on mine and success! That gets the wife off my back till the parts come in and no rush. Thanks for posting.
3/18/23 - Well - he is still helping DIY folks like me. The heater part for my dryer is unavailable - as are most of the parts. So this will help me get by until we pick up a new dryer. You live on Brother!
Awesome!! Crimped element back together with a connector, and good to go now! Thanks Bill, this was a great help! Borrowed a multimeter from a co-worker, and quickly found out it was the heater. Took it out, found the break, and repaired it! I’m a diy guy, but never worked on a dryer, or tested circuits/used a multimeter before. Thanks for putting these videos out there to help others, it means a lot!
So, since my dryer is about 10 years old, I had to do an extensive search to find a replacement heater at the best possible price, which turned out to be about 170 $. On top of that, I would have had to wait at least a month to receive it. I wondered if it was possible to simply repair it and the logical answer was yes, but I wanted to confirm. My initial thought was to hold the two ends together with solder, but your method is so much better and easier. Thank you so much for your video and thank God for the Internet!
Broken coil was definitely the cause of heater failure. I actually trouble shot backwards and pulled the coil first before testing the thermostats. Primarily because it was at the front and I wouldn't have to disassemble the whole dryer. The fix TOTALLY WORKED!!!! Thanks for the video!
I just applied this fix to my dryer and it works great. I do have the heating element on order, but you just save us from having to hang 2 loads of wash on the line!!! Bravo!!!
Great video. Friends Heat Pump htg elem broke. I said let's fix it. Dad said not possible. Found your video & showed them. We're done. I'm home. U saved me a headache Great work. Subscribed & watched ads. Next is the resettable LS. Never thought about trying that. Again, many thanks.
Our dryer wouldn't heat up anymore so I looked up your video. Turned out that was exactly what was wrong. My husband fixed it this weekend and it works great now! Thank you so much for an easy, cheap fix!
great vids.... got me up and running again for zero bucks..... since my wife was in the process of ordering a new $380 dryer when I told her "let me google it or find something on youtube," tonight were having steaks!!! thanks!
@@owenprince4823 Nothing wrong with using a more permanent bolt-type connector, even just putting a hole or slot in a bolt & tightening a nut to clamp the two element ends together would be more permanent that just some bent steel
@@user-ut9ln4vd5m I agree and that is what I did for myself. I made an eyelet with the element and then used a stainless steel bolt to lock the joint together and then welded it all together so it cannot work loose. That was for me but if I work on others I just use a new element. I have seen people use cheap aluminum crimp joints that work loose because the aluminum is too soft and gets softer when heated up.
@@owenprince4823 That sounds really solid, the welding maybe even overkill. I'd be surprised if aluminum didn't almost melt, but googling I guess it's melting point is 1220F, while the nichrome that heating elements are made of is only a little higher ~1400F so that's relatively close
God Bless You Bill! I was going to Crimp the broken heating element Core Wire but I Thought the “Metal Barrel would turn Bright Orange & Melt. Not thinking about, The current might flow & not concentrate heat on that spot! Bless You, May The Almighty keep you close with mother Mary & the angels. 😊
Thank you so much for the video I was having a terrible day and then my drier broke I did a quick search and came across this video right before I was about to lose my mind. Simple fix with your help thanks so much!!!!
THANK YOU so much. Works great!!!!! I was so upset that I would have to buy an element, or even a new dryer. My daughter's friend connected he coils and it's drying away... appreciate this so much... Absolutely free repair.
thanks Bill after watching this video I went ahead and ordered a new heating element for $20 off eBay and now my dryer heats up way better than the heating element that was old and fried up
Bill - thanks for the information. I watched yesterday and today just finished repairing our SamSung front loader dryer which stopped heating Friday night. You have saved the weekend and helped avoid another trip to the laundry. Short sweet and to the point. Dryer works great.
I used your 3 videos on diagnosing, disassembling, and how to fix a broken heater element. It worked!!! My sons clothes are drying nicely. He will be happy to have dry jeans in the morning. Thanks for the great videos. Now I am off to find a replacement coil.
The shorter an element gets the hotter it makes the air and the more yellow it glows. Yup, you have to be very careful not to shorten it for sure! Great video for people living in an age where we have to fix things rather than re-buying and disposing. I fix EVERYTHING now and it is amazing how much better we are living.
Great fix! My wife was planning on spending the day at her friends house doing laundry and leaving me with the kids. Fixed the dryer before 10am with this video. LoL 😂
I just did the exact same fix, but I had a feeling it might not be a good idea. But then I found this video and realized I’m not so crazy after all. So far so good!
Yep, my mom's dryer, but I inherited it 7 months ago when she passed away just short of 97 years old, Dec 31, 2021, the same time you made this post. It just broke and I will use this technique to fix it. It's actually the only dryer she ever owned in her life, a Kenmore, something like a 1980 model, making it 42 years old. i have replaced the belt on it once and now a repair to the heating element. I know all modern washing machines are garbage, I'm not sure about the quality of modern $400 dryers. I will always keep this one for the rest of my life, repairing as needed.
Hi all. This is a very good video to make a temporary fix on the heating coil. I have a Kenmore Series 100 that I bought used. Not sure of its age. Did the troubleshooting tips from the Sears video. Bad coil. Already ordered the replacement coil. However, I did the crimp fix as described in the video. I had to break off 3 rings because they were so brittle. The crimp worked but I'm glad I have a new part coming. $20 on ebay.
You saved me money...however not time(grin)!! I had exactly the same issue and your suggestions were on the mark. It is now clean, hot and running! Many thanks.
Cool man! I have a combination air conditioner/ heater in my studio and the heating element broke. It's by Kenmore and they don't make the heating element anymore and there are no substitutes according to the website . I paid $1100 bucks for this thing years ago. Thanks to you I don't have to trash it and get another one. Thank you
you rockkkk sir... bought all kinds of fuse thermostats and still no heat.... its the dryer element... was gonna order but instead i am gonna fix for free... returning the stuff to amazon...great video
Thank you! Of course our dryer stopped heating on a holiday weekend. New element takes 4 days to ship. This repair got us back up. Appreciate you posting!
Thanks so much Bill! For this and all your other vids. You are indespensable. Lot's of us that are pretty handy out there but no clue when it comes to appliance electronics. I used this very fix on my wife's dryer today and it worked like a charm ;) I'll track down a spare element but in the meantime we're good to go. You never realize how much you use something until it stops working :(
our dryer just went out and I used your vids to diagnose. Our dryer is the same model, has the same rust spots on the top, and the coil failed in the same spot. I was going to fix it the same way until the new coil comes in. thanks for confirming my idea. great helpful videos
mike johnson you’re right. When the $100/hour appliance repairmen come to my home, they watch at least two TH-cam videos before having a clue what they’re doing.
Bill, you Rock! My dryer went out last week and I cant afford a new one or repair bill. I found this and your other vids and was able to diagnose and fix my problem (heating element) I have a new part coming but in the mean time your fix is working great. Thanks
Brother, let me find out this will work. I'll be the happiest woman alive. I've got to find some kinda little piece of metal like yours though. I'm covered in dirty laundry and funds arent trying to pay for no dryer to get fixed. I pray I can fix mine. Thanks so much! You do rock!
Hey Bill, thanks for the input! fixed my element and my "non-resetable" fuze in my kenmore. However, like many of the comments, I found that if I'm going to use the low voltage aluminium connector for element repair, best to use the low setting in the heat. ( go figure). As I and others apparently found out, steel is the way to go. Thus, my point, I found using a spark plug connector, works much better. For those reading however, this is still as you said in your video A SHORT TERM FIX. Spend the 40.00 dollars , just Google it. thanks Bill!!!! satisfied viewer.
Good video, thanks.I would suggest cleaning the broken ends of the element with maybe 100grit sandpaper or similar.I would also suggest getting a high temp barrel splice (or ring terminal, what you showed in the beginning) and using that to handle the heat. While a "flat crimp" can work, a "horseshoe crimp" will typically last longer. I do industrial heating band fixes on plastic extruders using a 3/16" wide T&B crimper, these can last thousands of hours in an industrial environment, way longer than a residential dryer. Regardless, thanks for the video, even a poor fix can last a while. Much cheaper than a $100+ new element although getting to the fix can be a PITA.
Clean the grit: Yes, although not doing that doesn't seem to bother this guy's repairs. It's 240 volts, so that may go right through a little grit like Grogu through a gaggle of Jawas....disgusting creatures. High temp barrel splice, where am I going to find that in my garage? Ring terminal...I guess you mean the one he used...yes, that's available at Walmart or the Auto Parts store. Wut d hail is a "horseshoe crimp" and how do I make one with a pair of channel locks? As for PITA: Getting to this "fix" is no harder than simply replacing the element, and although dryers may vary, getting mine out was about the easiest DIY project I've tackled in a long while.
Hey Bill! I used this technique to repair my AEQ6000ES1 heater element, however, I didn't use a terminal lug, rather, I used a Butt Splice. I did remove the insulator prior to crimping on the element. I found a replacement on Amazon but will take a few days to get. I think I will order the replacement, but leave the "repaired" one in there for a while to see what happens. Thank you for the detailed and informational video!
Thank you for the great tip. I have a Frigidaire oven that has some kind of a ribbon style lower heating element that burned out in a spot as if it were a fuse. I straightened out the two sections so that they overlapped and pinched the two sections together with a piece of electrical connector fairly tight with a vice grip. The ohm meter showed good conductivity so I reinstalled and presto, it appears to work just fine! If this holds up, we will have saved over $150. My wife rolled her eyes but She'll be happy if it works out.
Thanks and condolences, Was going to buy a heater element but the negative reviews on china crap made stumble across this one. I will fix her tomorrow for free thanks to your video.
I tried this repair and it worked great! I already ordered a replacement element, but it won't arrive for over a week. All this fix has to do is last a week.
I wish I came across your video before I spent $50.00 on a new heater element kit. I am saving this video just in case I come across this problem again. Thanks
Thanks, Bill. The dryer is working fantaculisious! I'm no longer letting my wife do laundry. (told her she still didn't know the right way to use it...shhhh)

You rock my friend god bless you have know idea how much you are helping people 1.000.000. blessings my brother
This video is a great help and says a lot about heater functionality.
Thanks for the help. Worked like a charm. Got me through the weekend until I could repair it properly but when I took it out it was still working.
Straight, and to the point in just over 3 minutes!!! Excellent!!!!
It worked. Now we can use our dryer while waiting the new one. Thank you 🙏
Bill, you Rock! My dryer went out last week and I cant afford a new one or repair bill. I found this and your other vids and was able to diagnose and fix my problem (heating element) I have a new part coming but in the mean time your fix is working great. Thanks
Thanks Bill you saved me 25.00 from Amazon and 200.00 from the damn repair tech.
You’re a true hero!!! RIP.
BOOM! Fixed it. I knew I could do it, came to YT and you confirmed it. Thanks!
you helped my father to repair our dryer that has been broken for a few months and for that I am very thankful so Thank you very much
What a great man. Even after death, he continued to help others. Thanks Bill. RIP. Thanks TH-cam.
TheThirstythrifter did you get it?
God Bless you! mine snapped off right at the terminal and I was wondering if this was safe to do, at least in the short term. Thank you.
+Matt Logan Thanks for the great feedback in your comment. You are right on the money with your suggestions!
WOW, it worked. Thank you!! You just saved me $65.00 and a trip to the parts store!!
My exact same dryer broke heating element in same spot. Fixing now, thanks Bill
Thank you for taking the time. And showing how to fix de heating Coil. Will save lots of time and money!
So glad saw this video, fix worked like a champion, crimp the cool and we're in business again.! Thanks so much.
RIP sir and thank you for the video! Helped me out tremendously with our dryer! God bless
Charles Mampe went with steel crimp. Thanks for the high temp tip.
Worked like a champ. Now I can limp my dryer along until my replacement element comes in. Thanks
Genius!!!! Just repaired mine so I can use it until my new heating element arrives. Thank you.
You need a new wife...nah don't bother, they're all the same. I can't see how she wasn't impressed. Major props.
Saved $30. Thank you!
Can we do the same repair on oven's heating element. My oven's heating element is burnt and broken at one corner of it.
Thanks and condolences, Was going to buy a heater element but the negative reviews on china crap made stumble across this one. I will fix her tomorrow for free thanks to your video.
I just fixed my dryer because of this video, thank you so much.
I tried this repair and it worked great! I already ordered a replacement element, but it won't arrive for over a week. All this fix has to do is last a week.
It worked for me. Thanks!!! My wife can finally dry her clothes. U saved the day dude thanks
This man posted his last TH-cam video on October 23, 2016. And passed away a day later on October 24, 2016 .Rip brother. We got ya from here.
That is so sad. May his legacy continue to live on in his videos.
I wish I came across your video before I spent $50.00 on a new heater element kit. I am saving this video just in case I come across this problem again. Thanks
2024 and you're still helping people bro. Rest in peace and thanks for the knowledge!
Thanks bill, you saved my butt and made me look like a hero in my wife eyes.
Thanks Bill. Same thing happened to my dryer of the same model. Heat coil snapped, and great trick to get it working again.
Just did this today and it's worked perfectly!!! 👌👌👌
Thanks, Bill. The dryer is working fantaculisious! I'm no longer letting my wife do laundry. (told her she still didn't know the right way to use it...shhhh)
