  • Canada's own Tim Hortons is many people's go-to place for breakfast food, coffee, and donuts, and it has made its way across the border and to 13 other countries in the world. It is struggling but surviving in Canada, but the same can’t be said about its locations in the United States.
    It seems that people aren't’ digging the Timbits, pretzel bagels, and mac and cheese anymore. Many of its locations all throughout the U.S. have been closing down, and that is not a good sign for the once-popular joint.
    So, what’s going on with Tim Hortons? Here’s the real reason Tim Hortons is struggling to stay in business.

    The sad thing about Tim Horton's is that early on, they were not competing with anyone because they offered a great coffee, very good donuts and even their soups and sandwiches were good. When they were bought out by Burger King, the quality and taste of all their products dived down overnight and you cannot fool customers who were used to that special home feeling. The company lost its faithful customers and it was down from then on. If they could bring back that same quality and if they listened to the customers, then they could make it back. Otherwise, sad to say, I don't think they will bounce back.

    They used to sell coffee, but now they sell water. I heard that McCafe picked up their old supplier after Tim Hortons screwed them over. Tea is the only decent hot drink, but it's hard to mess up since they just add the hot water. The baked goods are always stale and don't taste fresh. Its not uncommon to see flies in the display cases as you wait in the slow line standing on sticky floors. Their employees no longer believe in the brand since they're treated like trash, and management seems to be most concerned with cost-cutting. McDonald's used to be the joke for minimum wage jobs but at least they have standards, a good corporate structure and most store managers at least have tight control of what's going on. Basically, Tim Hortons is now a generic fast-food chain that lacks identity and purpose. RBI has milked the chain dry and now they're so far behind Dunkin, Second Cup, McDonalds, Starbucks and even Country Style, I've lost all hope.

      @@trollingmermaids I worked there for 5 years at a few different locations, and noticed the same issues . Another major one is the emphasis on drive thru times over everything else , it causes staff to cut corners and compromise quality , especially by not stirring coffees properly . Another issue is having young kids who don't drink coffee making coffee , so they don't fully understand that it's undrinkable when you hand it out unstirred for the sake of shaving off 5 seconds of window time. They have a tendency to put the slowest staff on front counter which causes ridiculous lineups and very few people will jump over to assist them when it's needed . Now that a large number of staff members are foreigners that struggle to even speak English , it creates alot of mistakes , misunderstandings and overall frustration for customers that can be off-putting

    As a Canadian, I say that the main problem is they cut corners on the items that made them who they are. The quality of food and coffee had decreased dramatically over the years and customers have a choice. I think RBI just assumed they were gonna come in and cut corners and it would work out; but clearly that didn’t work. Also, I feel that they don’t pay enough attention to customers and their feedback! If they looked at these comments for example, I’m sure they’d be able to educate themselves. But RBI cares about money money money!!! I feel like customers give poor feedback on something and instead of listening they do the opposite and make it worse. RBI is 110% to blame for how they’ve handled this. Timmies was on top of the game before they acquired it

    Ever since they were bought up by RBI a number of years ago, they made tons of changes which forever changed the restaurant. Other than breakfast their other offerings are poor. Poor and super expensive food along with tiny portions. The food is cafeteria tasting. Bland and below average. Although Tim’s management Say the coffee is unchanged, it clearly tastes different. Not in a good way. Their so called specialty coffee are all made using with essentially vending machines. It’s like the ownership doesn’t know what to do with the chain. If they don’t figure it out soon, they may start to have to close locations as the chain starts to falter.

    I worked at a Tim’s in southern Ontario for over a year.
    I was lucky with the location I was at because our manager was awesome and listened to us when we needed to talk to her.
    However...drive thru times. Ever single order that is ordered via drive thru is expected to be done in 20 seconds or less. Which, in my opinion is ridiculous. Yes, speed is required for the fast food consumer. But this rule needs to be loosened. My hours were cut (for this minimum wage position) because I didn’t meet the 20 seconds at window.
    Next...the demand. They cut hours across the board when minimum wage was increased in Ontario. Which, I understand. But it isn’t fair to the ‘team’ that Tim Hortons wants to run their business.
    Lastly....finding out Tim’s was bought out by an American company. Tim’s was unique for us, even me, here I Canada. It was Our coffee chain. Owners who resided in Canada. When RBI bought them out it turned me off from the brand.

    My visits to Tim Hortons dropped about 70% after the sale to a US company who decided to remove fresh location pastry services. They opted to create distribution warehouses where baking would be done. The pastries would then be frozen and shipped to store locations to be dethawed and placed on shelves. Ruined the flavour and texture of the product. Since then, it’s been a slow decline as the rest of Canada catches up to me.
    It’s quite sad. Tim Hortons was such a strong point of Canadian pride for me most of my life. Now, it’s still something to talk about and promote to visitors, however it doesn’t inspire a passionate brag the way it used to. 😢

    You forgot a few pretty important changes that contributed to the company downfall.
    1) The switch to ready fresh in the mid 2000s. They fired all of their bakers and replaced them with fancy microwave bake ovens. All of the donuts were made in factories after the switch and spent weeks if not months sitting frozen in a warehouse. Yet they call them fresh. Owners of the restaurants got screwed out of their biggest profit margin in making products from raw ingredients. Some of the new microwaved frozen donuts have strange ingredients in them like aluminum leavening agents.
    2) They're not a Canadian company. South American company Restaurant Brands International owns them and Burger King. They're one of if not the number one users of palm oil in their factory made food items. Palm oil has been blamed as the number one reason for the deforestation of the rainforest and loss of animal habitat.
    3) They thrive on illegitimate government subsidies for their staff. They hire temporary foreign workers who have a good portion of their wages paid for with Canadian tax payer funds. They use multiculturalism as an excuse for the need to diversify their staff rather than hire available Canadian workers.
    This company has a lot more deep seeded issues than just gross food and terrible coffee lids...

    We have boycotted Tim's ever since they started treating their employees badly! A company's ethics is determined by how they treat the people doing the work for them. Not Canadian anymore and Human Rights have gone out the window.

    I work at a Tim Hortons, its especially busy during the quarentine here. I see a lot of people complaining about Tim's, and I can't really see too much as of why. Yeah the donuts come frozen and are then baked in the oven. The also installed new coffee pots a few months ago, we've had alot of regulars say the coffee has improved since then. My least favorite part about working here is getting my coworkers to help me out. I feel they should train everyone abit better so that we'll have orders under 3 minutes.

    Haven’t been to a Tim’s in about a year, used to drive through every weekday morning so just learning your lids have changed. Bring back the old lid but design it with a push in opening and tapered edges around the opening. For over a decade I pushed in the lid opening into the cup and folded the sharp edges of the lid under them selves. Stops coffee from shooting out the hole when you hit a bump and you don’t cut your bottom lip on the sharp edges of the lid opening. Feel free to send me some royalties once you have made this lid upgrade.
    You’re welcome!

    I was given a a Tim's gift card over 5 years ago, still, no desire to go there as the coffee, donuts, and service is bad. Roast my coffee at home now and it is better and cheaper!

    What happened is they became completely soulless, meanwhile still trying to play up the whole 'Canadian nostalgia' angle that sounds more and more desperate and artificial the further they take it.
    The coffee's gross and they don't offer non-dairy milk options, instead of trying to improve their dry, pre-frozen donuts they continue to throw sugar at them while caring zero about decent flavour, and you can tell how little they care about their staff by all the new food they keep throwing at them while not providing proper training on how to prepare them, nor balance an ever-growing and changing menu. Proof of their care for their own staff and customers showed when covid-19 was becoming an issue and they tried to tell staff they were only allowed to stay home with a doctor's note. Come on. Be willing to pay and treat them with respect, stop trying to do more while quality becomes less, and listen to customers for heaven's sake!
    Oh, and both lids majorly suck. It's 2020 and it's a lid-figure it out.

    Also, McDs now makes good coffee.

    Tim's has changed . But the change that I have noticed over the years is the customer service . The lack or loss of common Etiquette . The simple hello , How are you today . Thank you. Have a nice . A smile . If the employees seem like they don't want to be there . The customers won't want to be there as well .

    I’ve been to the concept Toronto location. They have some really good items on the menu that’s not available else there, like red velvet late and fancy donuts that’s actually delicious, comfortable and nice seating area to work on on ur laptop but downside... although it’s open 24 hours, after midnight, they shut off the late machines, and stop serving over 80% or more of their menu and all u can get is a regular coffee or tea. They even get rid of their regular pastures if I recall correctly, and breakfast not ready till 3 or 4am. So what’s the point of a specialty store that’s open 24 hours when the menu is only available for 12 hours. That’s was my second visit there and my first visit I went and really enjoyed the food and my time there and we went second time while were in the area and it was a total
    Waste of time because it was after 12:00am and their door was open but only coffee and tea available.

    I always liked Tim's, but the last few years they have pissed me off in a few ways. The treatment of their employees and customers.
    Also too long a wait to grab a coffee. People waiting for a meal when all I want is a coffee. Have a separate line for coffee and donuts and another for meals. McDonalds is where I go as often as I can and with their menu selection they can still get you out the door faster than Tim's.
    And also the price of their donuts is too high and they seem to get smaller each year.

    • @jaquigreenlees
      @jaquigreenlees 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is one Tim's not far from me that does the food line with a separate coffee line during busy times. They also have 3 tills so it is easy to do. Many locations only have 2 stations and slowing down the slower food line by only using 1 till would kill the location rapidly.

    You guys ignored the two biggest issues. First they stopped making the donuts and bagels fresh in store (I believe the soups were too) and second at least in Canada they lost their beans to McDonalds in the early 2000s and it has been awful ever since. Who's Mocha Joe without the beans?

      You’re full of bull. “Non-Canadians” don’t cost less. Wherever you go in Canada, Tim’s is always minimum wage regardless how your pretty face looks like. All the employees in Tim’s spoke English and I never had trouble with anyone of them. It’s soooo stupid to think that they pay anything more than minimum wage.

    • @CranKun
      @CranKun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What kind of garbage reason is that? Everyone gets paid minimum wage for working at a damn Tim Hortons. You want Canadians to serve Canadians? Then maybe if the resident "Canadians" would get off their high horses and choose to work in a degrading service industry job then maybe you'd have "competent" workers again.

    • @AdamDependentSalman
      @AdamDependentSalman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So what? Perfect English is not a requirement for these jobs. I'm very confident they'll hire people who can make coffee and pronounce the word "coffee". That's all it takes.

    You go into a Tim's and theres a team of 4-6 working on orders for the drive-through. And there is only 1 person working the cashier. Despite their also being a massive line in-doors. You stand there for 7-10 minutes most times during lunch before you can even make your order.
